Description

' PATBNTED APR. 21, 1908. B.` G. ERIKSSUULI y HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE.
APYLIGATION I'ILED PBB. l2. 1906.
BENGT GS'IAF ERIKSSON, OF CHRlSTINEHAMN, SWEDEN.
' HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 21, 1908.
Application filed February 12, 1906. Serial No. 300,724.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Beit known that l, BENGT GUsTAF EnIKs-- sON, subject of the King of- Sweden, residing at Christinehamn, Wermlan'd, Sweden, have invented new and useful 4Household Furniture, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to household furniture.
The object of the invention is to provide a novel form of chair, the parts of which shall be so constructed and arranged as to permit y of its being adjusted to form a couch or bed,
the chair, when the parts are in their normal positions having the appearance of an ordinary article of this kind.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combinationv of parts of a folding chair, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding arts -Figure 1 is a view in perspective of one orm of chair constructed 1n accordance with the present invention, showing it as vit ap.
pears when its parts are combined to form a chair. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view showing the chair of4 Fig. 1 with its parts-adjusted to form a couch. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of another form of chair. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the chair of Fig. 3 with its parts adjusted to form a couch.
' Referring to the figures by characters of reference, the seat 24 is hinged to the body rails 25 at 26 and carries a pair of rigid legsv 27, which when the seat portion is closed over upon the body portlon are disposed against the back roper as shown in Fig. 1'. The rails 25 are ra beted on their outer sides to receive the rail members 28 of the head rest, the latter being connected withy the rail members 25 by bolts or screws 29, and have their outer ends beveled as at 30 to engage the beveled shoulders 31 of the rabbets. The body 25 has frame ieces 32 secured therein while the seat an head rest have frame 4pieces 33 and 34 extending thereinto as shown. The frame pieces 33 are 'hingedly connected by means of hinges 35 with the frame pieces 32 and are designed to fold thereon independently of the seat section 24. The frame pieces 34 are hingedly connected to the frame pieces 32 by means of hinges 36 so that they can be swung relative thereto independently of the movement of the rail members 28. The head rest is provided with two legs 38 which serve' to support the rest, the legs being connected with the rail members 28 by detachable brace rods 39, the head as a whole being pivotally connected at 40 to the rail members 34 to be folded at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 1. The rails 34 are vdetached from the members 28 so that said rails and members are free to swingupon their respective pivots.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4, in which the body is provided with rockers, the main diHerence resides in the arrangement of the rail members 41 which are hinged at 42 to the rail members 43 of the body and are adapted to be folded against the outer sides thereof which are rabbeted, as shown in Fig. 2 for the purpose. Another point of dierence is that the braces 39 are 'dispensed with, and the legs 44 are hinged to the head rest and fold back against the same when the parts are assembled to form a chair.
In both forms of the invention shown, a detachable foot board 45-may be combined with the seat portion to hold a mattress from working 0H the couch.'`
It will be seen from the foregoing description that although the improvements herein defined are sim le in character that they will be thoroug y eflicient for the purposes designed and will result in the production of a novel and thoroughly efficient article of furniture.
I claim 1. A chair comprising a main body section having rail members and frame pieces rigidly connected thereto, rail members hinged to one end of the rst-mentioned rail members and constituting arm rests, said hinged rail members being movable into position upon one end of andvin alinement with the rail members of the body section, frame pieces hinged to the frame pieces of the body section and carrying the seat of the chair, said hinged frame pieces being movable into position within the extended rail sections, and a mainback sectionhinged to the frame pieces 0f the body section, and laterally movable side rails hinged tothe side rails of the body section and adapted to be seated therein, said hinged side rails extending longitudinally of the back section, said back section and frame pieces constituting a mattress support, and the rails of the sections constituting a retaining ledge.
2, A chair comprising a main body section having frame pieces and recessed side rails rigidly connected thereto, arm rests movably connected to the side rails and adapted to be supported in position thereon or upon one end thereof and in alinement therewith, seat 'carrying frame pieces hinged. to the frame pieces of the body section and adapted to be supported thereupon or in alinement therewith, a back section hinged to the frame ieces of the body section, and laterally movab e side rails hinged to and adapted to be folded into' the recesses within the side rails of section.
3. A chair comprising a main body section having rail members and frame pieces rigidly connected thereto, rail members hinged to one end of the first mentioned rail members and constituting arm rests, said hinged rail members being movable into position upon one end of and in alinement with the rail the body members of the body section, frame pieces hinged to the i'rame pieces of the body section and carrying the scat of the chair, said. hinged frame pieces being movable into position within the extended rail sections, a main back section hinged to the frame pieces of the body section, and side rails movably connected to the side rails of one of the sections and disposed to be seated therein, said side rails being separate from the back section but movable into position along its side BENGT GUSTAF ERIKSSON.
