UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODOR JOHNSON, OF PORTLAND, MAINE, ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPH H. TRAVIS AND EUGENE H. MAHONEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 122,834, dated January 16, 1872.
To allpersons to whom these presents shall come:
Be it known that I, THEODOR JOHNSON, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Folding-Ohair; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawing, hereinafter referred to, is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This folding-chair is constructed of a base having legs, and divided across the width of chair into two parts or sections, hinged to gether at their upper portions, in combination With a seat-board or frame that is hinged to one section of the said base so as to turn thereon and is so connected to the other section that when turned on its hinges of the one section of base it Will swing the other section on its hinges, and thus enable, with a proper relative arrangement of the several parts, a folding and unfolding thereof, as may be desired.
In the accompanying plate of drawing my improved folding chair is illustrated, Figs. 1 and 2bein g vertical sections, showingthe chair, respectively, unfolded and folded. Figs. 3 and 4, horizontal sections in plane of line was, Figs. 1 and 2, with parts broken away, and respectively showing the chair unfolded and folded.
A in the drawing represents a base or frame made in two parts or sections, B and 0, each having two legs, D D and E E, respectively, and hung together at their upper portions by hinges F F, so that the two parts of the base may be made continuous, as it were--that is, brought to the same horizontal plane or level (see Fig. 1)or brought into a position making a vertical acute angle with each other. (See Fig. 2.) G, the seat-frame, hung by hinges H H to the outside edge a of the section B of base A, so that it can be swung to rest upon the upper portion of base A. This seat'frame G has bolts I on its under side that at one end 7 are hung by pivots b thereto, and at the other end adapted to play in and out of sockets 0. made in the base sections 0 at its edge 01. The
base section B has an extension-frame, K, making'the back of the chair.
From the above description of my improved folding-chair it is plain that if the seat G be turned on the hinges H the base section 0 will be necessarily operated, and that, consequent- 1y, from the arrangement of the several parts, as shown, if the seat G be brought into a vertical position the base section 0 will be closed upon the base section B, (see Fig. 2,) and if the seat G be brought to a horizontal position, or nearly so, the base section 0 will be opened from the base section B. (See Fig. 1.)
With the chair-seat in position for use it rests upon the base A, (see Fig. 1,) and it is thus firmly and rigidly supported. The sections of base A are made firm and rigid by their edges d and f coming together, and thus arresting and preventing any further movement of the section 0 on its hinges to section B.
In lieu of the bolts I passing through the base section 0 they may be arranged in sockets on the exterior to section 0. The bolts-I may be also pivotedto the base section 0;;
but, if so, they must be constructed to length e11 and shorten or to move lengthwise on the pivot of section 0, to adapt them to the vertical and horizontal position of the chair-seat.
Although this invention has been herein particularly described in reference to a chair, it is applicable to stools.
Having thus described my improved foldingchair, I shall state my claim as follows:
The combination of the base A, made in two parts, B G, hinged together, with the seat G, hung by hinges to through a rod or rods, I, to part 0 of base A, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The above specification of my improvements in folding'chairs signed by me this 7th day of December, A. D. 1871.
Witnesess: THEODOR J OHN SON WM. H. CLIFFORD,
D. W. SCRIIBNER. (62) part B, and connected,
