SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,518, dated February 23, 1892- Application filed May 25, 1891, Serial No. 394,018- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WI LIAM S. GUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds; and I do.

hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates generally to folding beds, and particularly to a folding bed in combination with a hall-tree or hat-rack and to improvements in connection therewith whereby the bed may be lowered for use or raised into the frame of the halltree and concealed from view when not in use; also, it relates to otherimprovements hereinafter specified; and it consists in the novel constructions and arrangements or combinations of parts hereinafter disclosed in the description, drawings, and claims.

The objects of my invention are, first, to provide a light and compact article of furniture in which the bed-frame can be lowered or raised conveniently by an easy movement; second, to provide a novel arrangement of parts for swinging the folding bed-frame into the casing of the hall-tree; third, to provide for balancing the bed-frame while it is being raised or lowered, so that it will not close suddenly, but can be slowly closed by a slight pressure, and, fourth, to dispense with the heavy weights usually employed in this class of beds, as more fully explained hereinafter. These objects are accomplished by the improvements illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which the same reference-numerals inclicate the same parts, and in which Figure 1 represents a perspective View showing the rear of the hall-tree casing and the bed-frame detached therefrom with the pillow-board in the position which it assumes when the bed is closed or folded in the easing; Fig. 2, a perspective view showing the front of the hall-tree or rack and the bedframe partly lowered, and Fig. 3 a perspective View showing the rear of the casing with the bed-frame down and the pillow-board unfolded ready for use.

In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates the bed-casing which constitutes thehall-tree or rack, and 2 the bed-frame, which is arranged to swing head down in the lower part of said casing. The sides of the bed-frame at each end are raised, as shown, to convenientlyhold the bed-bottom and bedding. each side of the bed-frame at the head are secured the cam-blocks 3, which on their forward edges are curved eccentrically, and around said edges extend the supportingchains 4, which are fastened at their lower ends to studs 5 at the sides of the bed-frame immediately in front of the smaller ends of said cam-blocks. The upper ends of said chains are secured to similar studs 6 on the inside of the sides of the bed-casing 1 about midway between the top and bottom thereof. The inner sides of the casing at the lower part thereof are also provided with the stationary cams or shoes 7 which are irregularly curved on their rear edges, as shown.

The head of the bed-frame at opposite sides is provided with rollers S, which travel along the curved edges of said stationary cams or shoes as the bed-frame is raised or lowered to guide and control its movement, as more fully hereinafter explained.

The rear of the bed-casing at its lower corners is provided with angular plates 9 to hold the head of the bed-frame in place when folded.

The pillow-board 10 is hinged to the edge of the head-board and provided with the weights 11 to counterbalance said bed-frame as it is raised and lowered. V

The bed-casing is formed with a forwardly extended base, which constitutes a seat and serves to give the base sufficient breadth to steady said bed-casing and the head of the bed-frame when down or unfolded.

The bed-frame near the foot is provided with the usual folding legs 12, which support said frame when down or unfolded. The front of the bed-casing may be ornamented in any desired manner and is provided with the hooks 13, upon which various articles may be hung.

The operation of my invention is as fol= lows: When the bed-frame is down or unfolded, the rollers 8 rest upon the curved portions of the cams or shoes '7,before mentioned. In raising the bed-frame these rollers travel down the curved portions of said cams or shoes, which guide said rollers and cause the head of the bed-frame to fit securely between said cams or shoes and the angular plates 9, before mentioned, so as to securely hold the bed-frame in an upright position. The camblocks 3 and the supporting-chains 4 give the bed-frame when raising the same a rapid perpendicular movement after said frame passes an angle of about forty-five degrees and thus prevents the head-board from striking the floor.

Having thus fully described the peculiar construction and arrangement or combination of the several parts of my invention and its advantages and operation, what I claim as new is- 1. In a folding bed, the combination, with the bed-casing or hall-tree, of the bed-frame having eccentric cams thereon and supporting-chains passing thereover, said chains havin g their opposite ends attached, respectively, near the middle of said casing or hall-tree and near the lower ends of the sides of said bedframe, substantially as described.

2. In a folding bed, the combination, with the bed'casing or hall-tree, of the bed-frame having cams thereon, supporting-chains passing over said cams, fastenin -studs for the upper and lower ends of said chains, said chains having their opposite ends attached, respectively, near the middle of said casing or hall-tree and near the lower ends of the sides of said bed-frame, cams or shoes having irregularly-described rear faces, rollers on the opposite sides of the head of said casing, and the angular plates for holding the head of said bed-frame, substantially as described.

In a folding bed, the combination, with the bed-casing or hall-tree, of the bed-frame having cams thereon, supportingchains passing over said cams, fastening-studs for the upper and lower ends of said chains, said chains having their opposite ends attached,

respectively, near the middle of said casing or halltree and near the lower ends of the sides of said bed-frame, cams or shoes having irregularly-described rear faces, rollers on the opposite sides of the head of said casing, the angular plates for holding the head of said bed-frame, and the weighted pillow-board, substantially as described.

4:. In a folding bed, the combination, with the bed-casing or hall-tree, of the bed-frame having cams thereon, supporting-chains passing over said cams, fastening-studs for the upper and lower ends of said chains, said chains having their opposite ends attached, respectively, near the middle of said casing or hall-tree and near the lower ends of the sides of said bed-frame, cams or shoes having irregularly-described rear faces, rollers on the opposite sides of the head of said casing, the angular plates for holding the head of said bed-frame, the weighted pillow-board, and the folding legs upon said bed-frame, substantially as described. 7

5. In a folding bed, the combination, with the bed-casing or hall-tree, of the bed-frame having cams thereon, supporting-chains passing over said cams, fastening-studs for the upper and lower ends of said chains, said chains having their opposite ends attached, respectively, near the middle of said casing or hall-tree and near the lower ends of the sides of said bed-frame, cams or shoes having irregularly-described rear faces, rollers on the opposite sides of the head of said casing, the angular plates for holding the'headof said bed-frame, the hinged and weighted pillowboard, and the folding legs upon said bedframe, substantially as described.
