Specication of Letters Patent. Ptggmtltd NUV, 2?, 191'?,
Appiiaton area January e, 1917. serial No. 140,992.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LAUnrTs LAnsnN, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Furniture, of which the following is a specification. j j
This invention comprehends improvements in combination furniture and has particular reference to a combined wall bed and couch.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a bed which may be swung upwardly into a wall recess suoli as a closet or open fire place and which carries hinged to its under side a couch seat adapted to be swung into operative position when the bed is housed.
The invention also aims to generally improve structures of this nature and to render them more practical, useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed. n
In the drawings,
Figure l is a perspective view showing the bed raised and the couch seat in Working position.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the combined bed and couch showing the parts arranged as in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view showing the bed swung downwardly in position for use and the seat folded thereunder, and
Fig. t is a fragmentary perspective view showing one of the bed legs and its related parts.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a wall having a recess 2 therein forming a casing into which the bed 3 is adapted to be swung. This recess may be in the form of a closet, open fire place or the like and is designed primarily to house the bed in an out of the way position when it is not in use.
The bed includes a frame having a bottom board 4, side rails 5, a head 6 and a foot 7. rIhe bed frame is mounted to swing vertically into and be housed within the recess 2, on the pivots 8. Springs of the ordinary type are disposed upon the holsters 9 within the frame and receive the bed clothing.
To support the bed when the frame stands in a horizontal position, I provide the legs 10 each of which is hinged to a block 11 pivotally secured as at 11 in position on one side rail 5 of the bed. This rail extends beyond the bottom i of the bed and has secured to its lower edge a horizontal board 12 which projects forwardly beyond `the rail, and the legs are notched as at 13 to receive the edge of the board and be steadied thereby. When the legs are in use they are disposed as shown in Fig. 3 and when it is desired to swing the bed upwardly, the legs are first swung outwardly and upwardly and then turned by rotation of the blocks to which they are attached, into a horizontal position, at which time they are out of the way above the projecting edge of the board 12.
'Ihe couch feature of the combination article is formed of a back and a seat. The upholstering 13 is on a back board 13 connecting the said side rail 5 and the transverse strip 14. rIhe seat includes a seat board 16 having outer and inner rails 17 and 13 and suitable upholstering 19. rIhe.
inner rail 18 is hingedly secured as at 20 to the strip 14 so that the seat may be swung either into alinement with the back or into a plane at right angles thereto. To hold this seat against the bottom board 4 when the bed is disposed in a position for use, I provide a suitable catch 21; and to support the seat when swung at right angles to its back, legs 22 are provided. Each leg is hingedly mounted on a block 23 and may be folded against the seat board 16 or into a plane at right angles thereto. When the legs 22 are folded against the seat they are in an out of the way position and will allow the seat to be swung into alinement with the bottom et of the bed as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
l/Vhen neither the bed nor the couch is being used the entire structure is disposed within the wall recess 2 and an upholstered surface is presented to the interior of the room. With the piece of furniture in this position it is an easy matter to raise the seat 15 and form with the upholstering 13 a couch, and it is just as easy a matter to swing the seat into inoperative position and lower the bed for use.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be apparent that I have provided a very simple, practical and pleasing combination article capable of use either as a bed or a couch. I have shown and described a preferred em bodiment of my invention that I do not Wish to be limited to such specified construction, but may make such changes as Will fall Within the scope of the invention as claimed. Y
What I claim is In a structure of the class described, the combination with an open-faced casing having a main pivot near its lower portion, a bed consisting of a bottom board, sideand end rails, and the bed bottom, the entire bed being mounted near one side rail on said main pivot, a board secured beneath the opposite side rail and parallel With said bottom board and adapted to close into said Copies of this patent may be obtained for It will be understood that While,
casing when the bed is raised, and legs on this side rail, each consisting of a block pivoted thereto and a leg proper hinged to the block and having a notch adapted to pass over the projecting edge of saidunderlying board when the bed is let down; of a couch structure including an upholstered back iXedly mounted beneath the outer portion of said bottom board, an upholstered seat,k a hinge connecting thebacl; section and the seat section, and hinged legs at the outer edge of the seat sectionv adapted to be let down to hold this section elevated or to be folded when this section is folded against theV bottom board of the bed structure, and
a catch connecting said structure with the seat at` this time, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature.
LAURITS LARSIGN.
