H. A. J. RIEOKERT.
j Dressing-Case Bedstad No. 220,173. Patented Sept. 30, 1879.
WITNESSES INVENTORE MPETERS. PHOTO-LITHDGRAPHER. WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMANN A. J. RIEOKERT, on NEW YORK, N.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRESSING-CASE BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,173, dated. September 30, 1879; application filed April 19, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HERMANN A. J. RIEcK- ERT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Dressing-Case Bedstead, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish an article of furniture combining a dressing-case and bedstead in such form that the bed may be folded and concealed when not required for use, and so that when turned down as a bed the use of the drawers and other conveniences of the dressing-case is not prevented.
The invention consists .in combining with the hinged bed of a dressing-case drawer-cases, hinged to swing in front thereof, or be turned to one side, as hereinafter described.
The construction -and operation will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of the dressing-case bedstead with the bed raised or folded. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same as turned down for use as a bed.
Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is an upright stand or case, formed with an ornamental top portion, a, sides I), and base 0, which, when the hinged'bed B is raised, as shown in Fig. 1, partially incloses the same, and when the bed is lowered forms the headboard. The inner side of the case A is to be upholstered in any desired mannen.
The base 0 is formed at each side wit drawers and shelves, as shown. At the forward edge of the base 0 and at each side is a hinged case, 0, fitted with drawers adapted for being swung in front of the hinged bed B, or turned at one side to give space for lowering the bed. The two positions are shown in Fig. 1.
To each case 0 is attached a box, d, having a hinged cover, which boxes are convenient for various purposes, and when the cases 0 are turned to the front fill the space between the two cases.
A shelf, 0, pivoted to base 0 at each side, i
The hinge-joints are placed a short distance from thehead of the bed, so that the head projects Within the base 0.
When turned down the bed rests upon the front bottom board of base 0, and upon arms 9 at each side, that are attached to boxes at of the swinging cases 0.
The bed is balanced while being raised and lowered by a coiled spring, 6, contained Within a tube, b, that is attached beneath the head of the bed. A cord, is, that is attached to the bottom of the case A, passes over a pulley at one end of the tube h, and through the tube and spring 6 to a washer that fits loosely in the tube. As the bed is lowered the cord 70 and washer are drawn upon by the movement, and spring i thereby compressed with in the tube and the weight of the bed thereby balanced. The spring expands again when the bed is raised. a
One or more of the spring-supports are to be used, as required.
Upon the under side of hinged bed B a mirror, 12:, is attached, for use when the bed is raised.
The bed-clothing will be attached in any desired manner at the foot of the bed to retain it in place.
The described construction gives ample space for inclosing and concealing the bedclothing when the bed is lifted up.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a dressing-case bedstead, with hinged bed B, of the drawer-cases C G, hinged to swing in front thereof, or be turned to one side to afford space for lowering the bed, as described.
HERMANN A. J. RIECKERT.
