VILLIAM P. CONNER, OF BLOOMSBURG, PNNSYLVANIA.
SCHOOL SEAT AND DESK.
SPECIFICATION rforming part of Letters Patent No. 365,297, dated June 21, 1887.
` Application tiled June 12, 1586.
'To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. CONNER, a citizen of the United Statesresiding at Blooms burg, in the county of Columbia and State of Pennsylvapia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in School Seats and Desks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates Yto improvements in school seats and desks; and it consists of the peculiar combination vand novel construction and arrangement of the various parts for service, substantially as hereinafter fullyset forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my present invention is to provide improved means which shall dispense with the end pieces or frames at the ends of school desks and seats, which are objectionable for a variety of reasons, among'which may be Amentioned that they are always in the way of thelorush or broom in sweeping the floor, and the scholar or occupant of theseatv invariably kicks or strikes against the said end piecein takingandleavinghisorherseat. Iproposetoem-` ploy two transverse and onelongitudinal frame or section, which are to be suitably secured npo'n the door and connected and arranged relativelyto each other, so that the longitudinal section or frame shall be located betweentwo desks and serve as the supports therefor; and to the transverse sections or frames are hinged or pivotally connected the folding seats,
which can be adjusted for use independently or separately, instead of connecting thesaid seats, and thereby compelling both of them to be folded or unfolded when desired to leave one of the seats or occupy the same, as has heretofore been customary.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved seat and back therefor, which shallbe more durable and strong than the slatted seat lheretofore employed; to provide an improved hinge which will rest or lie at any position or angle to which it is'moved without danger of falling or breaking, and to improve the several parts inY minor details, so that they will be simple and strong in construction and cheap and inexpensive of manufacture.
In the accompanying drawings, which illus- Y trate a school desk and seatembodying my invention, Figurelis a diagram view showing the relative arrangement, in series, of the frames orsections, the desk and seat proper being serial No. 204,989. (No rubati.)
removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a section of the frame with the desk and seat appliedthereto. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the desk, taken on one side of the section 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are enlarged perspective views of the longitudinal and transverse sections of the desk detached. Fig. 6 is a like view of the seat bracket and hinge. Fig. 7' isa similar view of one of the foldable seats and the rigid back therefor.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in all theiigures, 1 designates the transverse sections and 2 the longitudinal sections,
which are arranged in series throughout the f building to form the aisles, the longitudinal sections 2 being arranged at right angles to the transverse sections and in line with each other throughout the series, as shown in Fig. l. The longitudinal sections are arranged at the middle of the transverse sections, and are firmly but detachably connected therewith.
.Each of these .sections is formed in a single -the said sections are further provided at their upper edges with horizontal flanges or lugs 6,
which eitend or project outwardly therefrom,
and are disposed or located immediately over the sockets 5. The longitudinal sections are provided at their ends with projecting tenons YV7, which tit snugly in the sockets 5 of the transverse sections and lie beneath the lianges 6 thereof, and the upper edges of the said sections 1 and 2 are in line or iiush with each other. The longitudinal section 2 is provided with upwardly-extending arms 8, which are arranged at or near the middle of the horizontal section and cross or intersect each other, the upper extremities of whichare con- Vnected by a tie-bar, 9, which has perforated ears orlugs 10. The arms S are projected above the tie-bar 9, and also connected by another bar, 11, having similar lugs, v12, and to IOO the bars or arms 9 11 are secured the bottom board, 13, and the top 11 of the desk proper, by means of screws or the like.
15 designates the seat-bracket, two of which are provided for cach of' the transverse sections. Each of these seat-brackets are cast in a single piece of metal, and comprise the angleplate 1G, the horizontal arms 17 at each end of and projecting outwardly from the angleplate, the curved or 1oop-shaped arms 18, connected with the arms 17, and the connectingbar 19 at the upper extremities of the arms 18. The angle-plate 16 bears on the upper and one of the vertical faces of the transverse section, to which it is rigidly secured by means of a screw or holt, 20, and the cross or connecting bar 19 has the lower end of the end sections, 2l, bolted or otherwise secured rigidly thereto. The end section, 21, of the desk is extended upwardly and provided with the horizontal arms or bars 22 and 23, which are separated from one another and connected' by intermediate arms, all of which are cast in a single piece. The bars 22 and 23 are each provided with projecting lugs 25, which are perforated for the passage of screws and the like to rigidly and firmly secure the bottom board, 13, and the top 14: of thedesk thereto, the top being extended beyond the end section to conceal the latter. There are two end sections for each pair Vof desks, and the top is extended beyond the sections 21 to conceal the same par tlall y. There are two independent seats pro vided for each of the transverse sections 1, being located on opposite sides of the longitudinal section 2,one seat being provided for the desk, which is arranged on either side of the longitudinal section. The end sections, being secured to the transverse section at their lower ends, do not come in contact with the fioor, and hence do not obstruct or impede the scholar or occupant of the desk in leaving or taking his seat, and also permit ready access by a brush or broom in sweeping the floor. The seat-brackets are each provided with sockets or bearings 24, in which are journaled the trnnnions 26 of a casting, 27,which is secured to the seat by screws or the like, and on these trunnions bear springs 28, which are clamped or held in place on the transverse section by the horizontal portion of the angleplate 16 of the seat-bracket bearing thereon. The seat can be turned to an upright position on the trunnions, and the rearlower edge thereof fits or rests in the loops of the arms 1S, and the seat bears against the back, and when the seat is turned to a horizontal position for use the casting 27 thereof bears squarely on the transverse plate 16 and provides a firm and secure support for the person or occupant. The springs 2S serve to hold the seat at any desired position or angle when adjusting the latter. The seat 29 is made of a single piece of wood, which is of the desired size, and the upper surface thereof is curved, as at 30, to provide the bulged portion 31 to accommodate or con form to the shape of the occupant, and the V'back 32 is 'likewise curved at 33 and secured at its lower edge by means of the connectingv bar 19 of the scat-bracket fitting in a groove, 31, while the upper edge of the said back is secured to a transverse strip, 35, that is secured to the top.
The desk can be easily and readily connected or put together, and it is a very substantial and strong structure, and theparts are simple and cheap.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a school-desk, the combination of the fixed transverse sections 1, arranged a short distance from eachother, thelongitudinal section 2, independent of and arranged at right angles to and between the transverse sections and rigidly but detaehably connected at its ends thereto, anda desk independent of but supported .on the sections, substantially as described, f'or the purpose set forth.
