Be it known that I, ISAAC NELsoN MILLER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and Stato of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofa or Lounge Beds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. Y

In this improved sofa or lounge bed the lower edge of the back is hinged to the rear edge of the seat,and the back at either or both ends connects with a vertical guideway of theback end of an arm-piece arranged to slide horizontally upon a suitable support therefor at the corresponding end of the sofa or lounge, and all so that in the swing of the back upon its hinges of the seat, moving it from its vertical position asa back to theV seat to a posi-V tion to serve with the seat as a bed, said sliding arm piece or pieces of the seat will thereby be moved horizontally on their support of the seat and projected horizontally vin `the rear edge ofthe seat, and in the swing of the back,

p r'eturning it to its vertical position as a back to the seat, said sliding arm piece or pieces of the seat Will thereby Vbe'moved horizontally and closed over their respective support of the seat, and the whole thus made a sofa or lounge, and securely fastened and held by then bolting orotherwise fastening the back and said sliding arm piece or pieces together.

In the drawingsforming a part of this'speciiication the improved sofa or lounge bed of this invention is illustrated.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a sofa with its back `in position for use as a sofa and in a plane between the front andback rails of the seat; and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on line 2 2, Fig. 1, and showing in dotted lines the back as swung' down and in position for the use of the sofa as a bed. In the drawings, A represents the seat having at each corner a supporting-leg, B, and C is a back hung by butt-hinges D D to the upper edge, a, of the rear rail, E, of the seat A.

lF F2 is a horizontal arm iu two parts, and one at each end G, and extendingfrom the front to the rear of the seat. The part F of each two-part arm is fixed to the seat, and the part F'l lits over and is free to slide and travel horizontally upon said fixed part F, and is confined thereto by a cross-pin, b, which is at tached to the sliding part FZ at each side of the stationary part F, and passes loosely through a horizontal slot, d, of the iixed part, and which slots extend from the front toward the rear of the seat. A

H is a vertical groove at the rear portion of the sliding part F2 of the two-part arIn-pieces F F2, and J is a pin attached to each end of the back, and each pin is entered into a vertical groove, H.

K is a leg extension at the rear portion of each sliding part F2 of the arm-piece.

L L are slide-bolts applied to the rear of the back, so as, with the back in its vertical position and for, use as a back to the seat, to be engaged with a suitable socket at the rear side of the sliding part F2 ofthe two-part armpieces F F2, and thereby to fasten and hold the back in its vertical position and against movement. 'Releasing the fastening-bolts L from the back leaves the back free to be swung down int'oa horizontal position, and iu 'so swinging it carries with it the sliding part F2 of each of the arms F F'l at each end of the seat of the sofa, and thus the sofa as a whole, and in its .seat and back portions, is adapted for the purposes of a bed, its back being then supported toward its outer edge, f, (the top edge when the back is in its vertical position,) by the rest of its pins J upon the bottom wall of the vertical groove H of each sliding part of the arms F F2, and also as a Whole by the rest of said sliding part upon the door by the legextension K thereof, allas is plain without further description. i

The bearing and running surfaces of the sliding part Il"l upon the stationary part F of the arms of the sofa, preferably, are provided with friction-rolls m,located at suitable points, and the pins J of the back, which run in the vertical grooves Hof the sliding parts of the arm, may be also provided with a friction roll or sleeve, all so as to prevent friction and wear in the running of the parts oneupon another in operating the sofa to place its back into a vertical position for the sofa to be used as a sofa, or in a horizontal position for the sofa to be used as a bed. The back, when in horizontal position, (dotted lines,Fig. 2,) abuts by its lower edge, g, against the rear edge, Z, of the back rail, E, ofthe seat.4

The seat, back, and end arms of the sofa herein described areupholstered orotherwisc suitably finished for use, and as may be desired.

The several parts of the sofa may be made of any suitable material-wood or metal, de.- and theseat at one end only in lieu of both ends, as particularly shown and described, connected to the back, as explained.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a sofa, lounge, &c., in combination, a seat, A, a back, C, hinged to said seat, a horizontal arm piece or pieces, F F2, made in parts, one stationary on the seat and the other connected to and adapted to travel horizontally ou said stationary part, and also eonneeted through a vertical Way, H, to the back, and adapted for the back to travel thereon,

seat, A, a back, C, hinged to said seat, a horizontal arm piece or pieces, F F2, made in parts, one stationary on the seat and the other connected to and adapted to travel horizontally ou said stationary part, and also connected through a vertical way, H, to the back, and adapted for the back to travel thereon, legsupports K for the back, and means by which to fasten the back, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
