P B JACKSON COMBINATION DIVAN.
No. 571,000. Patente'd Nov. 10, 1896'.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PERCY B. JACKSON, OF NEVVBURYPORT, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINATION-DIVAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,000, dated November 10, 1896. Application filed April 2, 1896. Serial No. 585,972. (No model.)
To a. whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERCY B. JACKSON, of Newburyport, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination- Divans, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
Figure 1 is an isometrical drawing of my combinationdivan in the closed position, showing it as an ordinary divan. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a portion of the back and arm, showing the device for adjusting the arms at various angles. Fig. 3 is an isometrical drawing of my invention in an open position, showing the location of the bracket or lamp-shelf L, also showing how the divan can be transformed into. a conversation-chair.
' Fig. 4 is an isometrical drawing of the lampshelf L, showing the method of attaching it to the back of the divan.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In order to facilitate the explanation of my invention, the drawings are made of the framework only without the upholstering, as this of course forms no special part of my invention.
The object of my invention is to combine in one piece of furniture several useful and novel features, which enable me to convert it into at least four distinct articles of furnitureviz. an ordinary divan, such as is clear--- ly shown in Fig. 1, a bed which can be readily formed by lowering the arm D to a substantially horizontal position by means of the curved ratchet N, and by adjusting the arm D, which is also provided with a similar curved ratchet, so as to form a pillow.
The third form to which my device can be transformed is clearly shown in Fig. 3, and
in this form is'useful as a reading-chair, a
' N and holds it in the required position.
scroll on its edge to prevent articles from sliding off.
By my method of construction I-maintain that in each of these several forms my invention is equally useful and serviceable. My lnvention is constructed in the follow- 1ng manner.
The combination-divan is constructed of two sections A and B, substantially rectangular,w1t h legs at each corner. These sections are omed together by hinges T, located, as shown in Fig. 4, on the back side of the backs H and H. The leg E is provided with a hooked catch 0, and the leg E with a socket O for said catch, so that when the divan is 1n the position shown in Fig. 1 it will be securely held. Both the arms D and D are connected with the framework of the divan by the hinges V, and are provided with curved metal ratchets N. lhese ratchets are attached to the arms D and D and are pivoted at X 111 Fig. 2, and move through the cleats Z, which are attached to the back side of the backs of the divan H and H. These cleats have a transverse spine, (indicated at Y,)
which engages the teeth of the curved ratchet The curved ratchet is further provided with a post or knob R for lifting the ratchet out of the spine referred to above.
The legs of the divan can be supplied with casters orno't. a
The shelf L is attached to the back I-Ibv the hinges P, and onthe back of the back H is the ledge M, which forms a support for the shelf when it is in the position shown in Fig. 3. The shelf is further provided with a hasp S, which when hooked in place holds the divan securely in the position shown in Fig. 3.
When upholstering the divan, I prefer to disguise the joint form between the backs H and H in Fig; 3 by filling in the space with herring-bone. The rest of the couch is upholstered in any approved manner.
What I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a divan composed of two equal rectangular sections, connected by the hinges T on their backs, and provided with the hooked catch and socket C and O, on the middle front legs, the lockingshelf L attached by hinges P, to one of said sections and provided with a hasp- S, for securing it to the adjoining section, when said sections are swung apart, substantially in the manner described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the combination of a divan composed of two substantially equal rectangular sections, connected by hinges T at their backs, the locking shelf L attached by hinges I, to one of said sections, and provided with means for attachment to the adjoining section, for securing said sections when they are adjusted to the proper angle.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence'of two subscribing witnesses, on this 29th day of March, A. D. 1896.
PERCY B. JACKSON.
