E. LEVINGE.
FOLDING CHAIR FOR DOOR STOOPS.
exited June 9, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIZABETH LEVINGE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALE TO SARAH ANN SHIELDS, OF SAME PLACE.
FOLDING CHAIR FOR DOOR-STOOPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,900, dated June 9, 1896. Application filed September 25, 1895. Serial No. 563,824. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH Lnvnvcn, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs for Door-Stoops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain improvements in folding chairs and baclcrests of that general class in which supporting-legs are dispensed with and is intended principally for use on door-stoops, as more fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of chair open and in position for use. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the chair folded; and Fig. 3 is an elevation, on a somewhat larger scale, of a detail of the structure.
Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the main seat portion, preferably formed of an open wooden frame and having a Woven cane or other suitable seat portion, as shown. To the rear of the seat is hinged the back-rest B, of the same general construction as the seat A. The hinges O, which connect the seat to the back-rest, are of the peculiar construction shown more clearly in Fig. 3, comprising leaves 0, having abutting ends 0, which, when in contact with each other, prevent excessive movement of the back-rest and hold it at a convenient angle for the occupant of the chair.
D represents a foot-rest or an additional seat which rests on the next lowest step, and may be used either as a foot-rest or as a seat for another person. This section D is connected to the main seat A by a connecting section E, hinged to both the section D and to the seat-section A, and in order to present a uniform appearance is also made of the same material as is the seat portion, although it may be formed of a simple open connecting frame or bars, as will be readily understood.
In use the chair is opened out, as in Fig. 1, the portions A and D resting on adjacent steps, and the back-rest B being inclined at a convenient angle. When not in use, the sections are folded fiat, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the chair may be conveniently carried from place to place and will occupy but a small place when packed for shipping.
I am aware that folding seats have heretofore been employed for use on door-stoops, but in such cases it has been necessary to employ folding legs to support the forward edge of the seat portion, and the devices have been more expensive to manufacture than is the case with a chair constructed in accordance with my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A folding chair for door-Stoops, said chair comprising in combination, a main seat portion A, adapt-ed to rest upon and be supported by one of the steps, a back-rest E of a. width approximately equal to the width of the seat portion, hinge-leaves 0 having abutting ends 0' secured, respectively, to adjacent edges of the seat portion A and the back-rest B and forming hinges which limit the backward movement of said back-rest, a foot-rest or seat D adapted to rest upon and be supported by a lower step, a connecting portion E extending between the sections A and D and hinges to each of said sections, the combined width of the sections D and E being approximately equal to the width of the seat portion A, so that the various sections may be folded in small compass when not in use.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
