COMBINED TABLE AND CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1910.
Application filed March 8, 1909. Serial No. 481,966.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM A. TREIEL, a citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding in New York, in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tables and Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to supply for tenements, apartments, cottages and other habitations, a piece of furniture which combines the advantages of a table and chair and which can be conveniently used for either purpose, taking up the space of one of the articles only; and for this purpose the invention consists of a combination table and chair which comprises a chair-frame provided with a seat and arms, a table provided with a middle portion hinged to the sidearms of the chair-frame and resting thereon, when used as a table, the middle-portion being upholstered at the under-side, side-leaves hinged to the center-portion of the table, and straps for locking the middle-portion of the table to the arms of the chair when the middle and side-portions are placed in position on the arms for use as a table.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my im proved table and chair combined, shown in position as a table, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the combined table and chair, shown in position for use as a chair, Fig. 3 is a sideelevation of the piece of furniture shown as a table, drawn on a larger scale and showing the hinge-connection of the table with the side-arms of the chair, Fig. 4 is a plan-view of the piece of furniture shown in position as a chair, also drawn on a larger scale and partly in section on line el, 4, Fig. 5, Fig. 5 is a side-view of the chair, partly in section and showing the connection of the table, when in use as a back for the chair, with the arms and lower part of the chair, Fig. 6 is a side-elevation of a detail, and Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on line 77, Fig. 6.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the different figures.
Referring to the drawings, a represents a chair, the seat, frame and arms of which are made in any approved construction, but which is not provided with a fixed back; the back in this case being formed of the tabletop 6, which is made of three portions-a middle leaf 6 which is connected by pivotstraps d with the side-arms a of the chair a, and of two side-leaves b that are hinged to the sides of the middle portion 12 as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. The middle portion 6 is preferably upholstered at its underside for the greater part of its length so as to form, when a person is sitting in the chair, a comfortable support for the back of the same. i
The hinge connection between the sidearms a of the chair and the middle leaf 6 of the table-top is obtained by pivot-straps d, which are pivoted at their rear-ends to stationary lugs al that are attached to the middle leaf 6 of the table-top. The straps (Z are provided with longitudinal slots d having notches 6Z3, which are placed into engagement with stationary stop-pins d on the sidearms, so as to permit the adjustment of the middle leaf of the table-top into two diiferent inclined positions when the piece of furniture is to be used as a chair, as shown in Fig. 5. In Fig. 3 is shown the position of the strap-connections with the table-top in dotted lines, when the same is placed on the side-arms of the chair for use as a table.
The hinged side-leaves b of the table-top b are locked in position on the back of the middle leaf, when the latter is used as a back for the chair, by means of a latch f pivoted to the underside of one side-leaf and a keeper f which is attached to the adjacent edge of the other side-leaf, so that both side-leaves are held rigidly on the middle leaf when the same is used as a back. The lower part of the middle leaf 6 is engaged when in inclined position, by frictioncatches f which are attached to the lower parts of the rear-frame of the chair, said catches giving sufficiently so as to establish the engagement with the notches o in the lower part of the middle leaf 6 as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. The locking of the side-leaves to the middle leaf of the table prevents the swinging about of the sideleaves on their hinges which would be very objectionable. The pivot-straps cZ move in recesses a of the side-arms a when the table-top is swung into backwardly-inclined position and back again, into its position on the arms of the chair. The pivot-straps d are held in engagement with the pins d when in inclined position by coiled springs s which are placed on the pivots al and which engage at one end the middle leaf and by their other ends pins (Z on the straps I strap connection between the sidear1ns and d so as to hold the latter in engagement with the pins cl and prevent the middle leaf from shaking and changing its position, when in position as a chair-back. Said straps and pins prevent the middle leaf from sliding on the arms of the chair, when the leaf is in position as a table-top. In this way the piece of furniture may be used either as a table or as a comfortable chair, and save thereby. either a separate table or a separate chair, especially in tenements and other places where such a combination is desired on account of lack of space.
The combined table and chair can be readily changed from table into chair, and Vice versa, as required for use, the middle and side-leaves of the table-top resting by their adjacent edges on the arms of the chair, while the pivot straps project in their inverted position, into recesses 21 located at the underside of the middle leaf 6 at the edges of the same as shown in Figs. 2 and 8.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A combined table and chair comprising a chair having side-arms with stop-pins thereon, a table-top, a pivotstrap connection between the side-arms and the table-top, said pivot-straps having longitudinal slots and notches for engaging the stop-pins when the table-top is placed in position as either a chair-back or a table-top.
2. The combination, with a chair provided with side-arms and stop-pins on said sidearms, ofa table-top consisting of a middle leaf and two hinged side-leaves and a pivotthe middle leaf of the table-top, said pivotv straps having longitudinal slots and notches for engaging the stop-pins when the tabletop is placed in position as either a chairback or a table-top.
3. In a combined table and chair, the combination of a chair having side-arms, a table-top formed of a middle leaf and two sides leaves, spring-actuated pivot-straps connecting the middle leaf with the sidearms, said straps being provided with longitudinal slots and notches, and stop-pins in the sidearms for engaging the pivot-straps, said pivot-straps moving in recesses of the arms and middle leaf for permitting the swinging of the table-top over the side-arms of the chair into inclined position for use as a chair-back and back in position on the side-arms for use as a table.
l. In a combined table and chair, a chair provided with side-arms having stop-pins, a table-top composed of a middle-leaf and hinged side-leaves, means to hold the sideleaves in folded position, pivot-straps having notched slots receiving the stop-pins, and a spring to hold the notches in engagement with the stop-pins when the table-top is in position to vform a chair-back or when it is in position as a table-top.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
