INVENTOR: I wimp BY MM ATTORNEYS.
WITNESSES i UNITED STATES PATENT Urrrcr.
VILLIAM H. DELL, OF NE? YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters 7 Application filed August en, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. DELL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Bed, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved folding bed, which when folded and not in use forms a sofa or lounge and an ornamental mirror-holder.
The invention consists in parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully set forth and described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional elevation on the line y 3/,Fig. 3, of my improved folding bed folded. Fig. 2 is a similar elevation of the same unfolded. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same folded. F g. 4 is a detail sectional plan view on the line as as, Fig. 3.
The bed bottom or support A, having the fixed end and side pieces, A, forms the back of a sofa-seat, 13, secured to the bottom edge of the bed-bottom, said sofa being provided with appropriate upholstery, as is also the lower part of the under side of the bed-bottom, forming the back B of the sofa. The sofaseat is provided at one end with a suitable head-rest, O. The rear part of the sofa-seat B is pivoted by a rod or pivots, D, between the side pieces, E, of a case, E, having a back, E and a top, E on the front edge of which an ornamental cornice, F, is secured, on which a head-piece, G, is placed. The front edges of the side pieces, E, are also ornamented more or less. The bedbottom is of such size that when it is swung up it fits in the opening in the front of the case. A cord or chain, H, is secured to the upper end of the bed-bottom frame, passes over a pulley, J, on the inner surface of one of the side pieces, E, and is secured to a weight, K, which slides in a casing or guide-box, L, in one corner of the case E, which weight must be about equal to the bed support and attachments, so that it can about balance the same. A head -rest, M, is hinged on one end of the bed-bottom, and a similar footrest to the other end. The bed-bottom has a Patent No. 335,434, dated February 2,1886.
Serial No. 175.377. (No model.)
notch or recess, N, in the outer surface of one end piece for receiving the prong of a bevelhook, 0, formed on the end of aspring, P, secured on the inner surface of one side piece E, said side piece having a recess, 17, for re ceiving the end of said hook. A rod is secured to the hook and passes through aslot in the side piece of the casing, which rod has a handle, Q. For the sake of uniformity, asiniilar handle is secured on the other end piece. Two legs, R, are hinged to the under side of the seat B at the front edge, and are united by a bar, S, to which a spring, T, is secured, the rear end of which is secured to the seat at the rear edge. A flat locking-spring, U, is secured to the seat B at the rear edge, and its front notched end, U, can be rested against the bottom inner corner of the bar S. The case E and the legs R have casters or rollers a. A mirr0r,V, or any other fancy panel is secured on the under side of the bed-bottom above the sofa-back, and the legs W between the ends of the mirror and the ends of the bed-bottom are hinged to the bed-bottom at the front or upper edge, and are adapted to be folded into recesses in the front. The legs are also provided with hinged or folding braces I. A handle, d, is secured to the under side of the bed-bottom above the mirror V.
The bed is adjusted in the following manner: \Vhen the same is not in use as a bed, the bed-support is swung up and fills the front of the case E, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The legs It are swung down, and are locked in place by the spring U. The bed-support is held in the raised position by the spring-hook O. Vhen the bed is to be used as such, the free end of the spring U is disengaged from the bar S, and the spring T then immediately swings the legs R against the under side of the seat B, as shown in Fig. 2. The bed'support is then swung down into the position shown in Fig. 2. The legs W are swung down and stiffened and braced by the braces I.
To fold the bed after use, the bed-support is swung up into the case E, the legs R are swung down, and the legs W are swung into their proper places. The bed-bottom is held raised by the catch 0.
The bed can be folded or unfolded very easily and rapidly, is strong and safe, and 00- cupies very little space.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A folding bed consisting of a casing, a hinged bed-support having a sofa-back formed on the lower part of its under surface and provided with a mirror above said back, a sofaseat secured to the lower end of the bed-sup-' port, and a hinged support for the outer edge of the sofa-seat, as specified.
2. The combination, with a case, of a bedsupport, A, pivoted in the same, the sofa-seat B, secured to and projecting from the bedsupport, and of the legs R, hinged to the outer edge of the sofa seat, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The co1nbination,with acase, of the bedsupport A, pivoted in the same, the sofa-seat B on the bed-support, the legs R, hinged to the sofa-seat, the bar S, uniting them, and the spring T, secured to the sofa-seat and the bar S, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The coinbination, with a case, of the pivoted bed-support A, the sofa-seat B on the same, the legs R, hinged on the sofa-seat, the
bar S, uniting the legs, the spring T, secured to the bar S and the seat, and of the lockingspring U, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The combination, with a case, of the bedsupport A, pivoted in the same, the sofa-seat B, formed on the bed-support, and the latch O on the inner surface of one side of the case, substantially as herein shown and described.
6. The combination, wit h the case E, of the bed-support A, pivoted in the same, the sofaseat B, formed on the bed-support, the sofaback B, formed on the under side of the bedsupport, the mirror V, secured on the under side of the bed-support, and of the side pieces, W, hinged on the under side of the bed-support at the ends of the mirrors, substantially as herein shown and described.
