IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING CHAIRS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent making part of the same.

To all whom 'it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Fannnnro W. Rrormnnsou, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and improved Folding Chair; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked'thereon making a part of thisspecification.

The nature of this invention is an improvement in the construction .of folding chairs, whereby they are rendered light, durable, and more useful than heretofore.

In the accompanying 'drawing Figure 1 represents a side view of my invention partlyin section;

Figure 2, a plan of same; and

Figure 3, a view of the chair when folded.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the drawing.

A represents the seat of the chair;

B, the back;

f, the hinges. I The frames G of the seat A, back B, and extension C are made of any suitable wood, and may be framed together infiany desirable and substantial manner, and the filling of said seat, back, and extension is'composed of cane woven in said frames.

The several parts bein g thus constructed are secured to each other by the hinges a, (see fig. 1,) so that they may be folded the one within the other, as shown in ii .3.

It will be observed that the hinges a are so made as to admit of v the several parts of the chair lying closely together, the one within the other, and thus enable them to be readily packed away or transported.

To the under side of the frames" of the seat, back, and extension are secured the supports or legs E, by the hinges f, so that when the chair is opened'or .unfolded it will be supported by said legs.

The supports or legs of the seat are kept in position by the braces (l d.

The arm F is constructed of two pieces of iron, 9 It, so that when the back is folded into the seat said arm will fold down with said back and will lie parallel or nearly parallel with said seat.

The back B may be set to any angle or inclination with the seat A by fitting the pawl 11 into the ratchet 0, (see fig. 1;) or, if desired, the pawl 12 maybe thrown back and the back B folded down in a line parallel with the seatA and extension 0, and supported thus horizontally by the legs or supports E, and thus transform the folding chair into a bed.

When the back- B is folded up nearly at right angles to the seat A, and extension 0 folded out horizontally andsupported by the legsE, anarm-ohair is formed, and the extension 0 becomes a foot-rest; or, if desirable, the extension 0 may be folded into the seat A, and thus an arm-chair is formed without a foot-rest.

To enable the extension to be thus folded int the seat and at the same timepresent the right side of the. cane filling uppermost, I pivot the frame G of said extension to the strap ofthe hinge a at s so that it maybe revolved between said straps, and thus not only present at all times the right side of the cane filling uppermost, but, if desired, the occupant of the chair may draw into his lap said extension, and thus use it fora table or'desk for writing.

The supports or legs E are composed of bent wood, thus enabling me to form said supports or-legs of a light, durable, and exceedingly strong material.

It will be observed that when the back B is in the position of a support the legs E are folded parallel with its sides and held in .position by the elas ticloops t, and when the extension 0 is folded on the seat A the legs E are folded parallel to the sides of the frame G and are there retained by the elastic loop 6.

Having thus described my invention,
