FOLDING CHAIR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,501, dated February 19, 1 895.

. To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, -HERMANN Evans, of Mazatlan, Mexico, have invented a new and Improved Folding Chair, of .which the follow-j ing is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements inthat class of folding chairs which are adj ustable and have a flexible seat adapted to be arranged so that a person may sit or lie at any desired inclination.

The object of my invention is to produce an improvement in folding chairs of this class, which enables a person to sit or lie comfortably in various positions and which also has an adjustable support for the limbs and feet, so that these parts of the body may be raised conveniently, to provide means for using the chair as a bed if desired, and to construct'it in such a way that it maybe folded flat when necessary.

To these ends my invention consists of cer tain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of'this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a perspective view of the chair embodying my invention, showing it in position for use. Fig. 2 is an inverted perspective view of the chair when folded fiat-5 and. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the leg and foot rest and its supports, the webbing being removed from the rest.

The body portion 10 of the chair is of substantially the usual kind, comprising two

11 and 12, which are pivoted together, as shown at 13, so as to fold fiatwise together or to extend at angles to each other, as shown in Fig. 1. The

11 and 12 are held in the desired relative positions by the supporting legs 14, which are pivoted to the frame 11, and the cross bar 15 which is adapted to rest in notches 16 in the frame '12, and by adjusting the cross bar in the notches, the pitch of the frame 11 may be regulated. These frames support a flexible seat or webbing -17 which is secured at one end to one end of the frame 11 and at the opposite end to one end of the frame 12. not claim it .by a hinge connection to be described pres- I ently, with a foot and leg rest having side 'bars 18 and a connecting webbing 19 on which a persons legs may rest. The side bars 18 have no cross bars near the ends, so that the thepitch or inclination of the leg rest to be easily regulated. The front end of the leg rest is supported by a frame 22 having suitable cross' bars 23, andin the side bars of the frame are notches 24 to engage the cross bar 25 of the legs 26 which are pivoted to the side pieces 18'of the leg rest, and byadjusting the cross bar 25 in the notches 24 the pitch of the leg rest may be regulated.

It will be seen from the above description that the chair may be adjusted so as to hold the persons body at any desired inclination, and the leg rest may be also adjusted so that the legs and feet may lie comfortably on it and in this manner the person may assume the easiest attitude possible. The chair may be adjusted so as to be used as a seat, or it may be straightened out to serve as a bed.

If it is desired to use the chair without using the leg rest, the frame 11 may be first raised, the leg rest and its supports folded back beneath the frame 1 2, after which the frame 11 may be adjusted by means of its supporting legs 14 and cross bar 15, and the chair used in the ordinary way.v When the leg rest is used, a strap 27, which is fastened to one of the cross bars 23 of the leg rest, is carried back and made fast to the cross bar 11, as in Fig. 1, a suitable button being used for this purpose and thus the legs of the leg rest are braced. This strap is also used when the leg rest is straightened out substantially level with the body of the chair to form abed, the manner of its use being illustrated in Fig. 3. When the leg rest is in this position the legs 22'and 26 are crossed and the strap 27 is fastened to a button 28 on the cross bar of the legs 26 and it thus serves to prevent the legs from spreading and the leg rest from collapsing.

If the chair is to be folded, the frame 22 is folded up between the side bars 18 of the leg rest, the legs 26 straightened out parallel with the leg rest, and the leg rest, the frame 22, the legs 26 and the links 20 swung back into the frame 12,as shown in Fig. 2, and the parts may be held in position by a strap 29 which is fastened around the parts of the leg rest and also around the

11 and 12, and the Whole aifair is thus rendered flat and easily portable.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a folding chair, of a leg rest, comprising side bars connected by flexible Webbing and having a hinged connection with the side bars of the chair, a notched frame pivoted to the outer endof the side bars of the leg rest, legs pivoted to the side bars of the said leg rest between their ends, and connected together by a cross bar, with which the notched frame is adapted to engage and a strap secured to the notched frame, and adapted to have its free end connected With a cross bar of the chair or cross bar of the pivoted legs, substantially as described.
