Be it known that 1, WILLIAM JAMIsoN CURRY, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Victoria, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Camp-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a portable camp chair susceptible of being taken apart and folded together for packing, and having features of design which render it a substantial and serviceable chair for camp use. In many chairs of this description the folding elements are such that the legs or members which sustain the weight are under severe transverse strain and are therefore not capable of supporting a heavy weight or onduring rough usage.

In the chair which is the subject of this application the legs are under an endwise strain and are therefore stronger for the service required.

The invention is particularly described in the following specification, reference being made to the drawings by which it is accompanied, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair complete as prepared for use, Fig. 2, an enlarged detail of the form of hinge by which several of the chair members are connected together, Fig. 3, an enlarged detail of the ratchet member by which the web seat and back are maintained tight when the chair is in use, and Fig. 4, an enlarged detail showing the manner in which the seat rods are secured by the socketed ends of the legs. Fig. is a detail section of one of the legs and rockers showing their connection.

The seat of the chair is composed of two side frames 2 of substantial design between which extend rod members 3 and 4 which removably fit into cylindrical holes in the side frames 2 and are held in place by the tapered socketed ends of the legs 5, the socket holes for which in the under side of the frame 2 intersect the cylindrical holes for the rod members 3 and 4, the ends of the rod members being grooved as shown in Fig. 4 to permit the leg ends to pass and afford a hold of the rod ends.

A seat 6 of Web material is provided with a loop through which the rod 3 may be passed and at the front is secured in any suitable manner to the rod member 4 which may be rotated in the side frames to roll and tighten the web between the rods, the roller being secured against back rotation by ratchet teeth 7 formed in or secured on the roller 4 just inside of one of the side frames 2, which ratchet teeth are engaged by a pawl S pivoted on the side frame 2.

The back of the chair is formed of two up right members 10 each having a tapered lower end to fit into a corrcspomlingly tapered hole in the upper side of each side frame 2 forward of the back rod 3 of the seat, the upright members sloping back at a suitable angle to afford a comfortable rest. Across the upper ends of these uprights 10 is secured a top rail 11 rotatable in a hinged connection, which is commonly used in other parts of the chair. This hinged connection consists of a metal band or stirrup 12 which rotatably its in a shallow circumferential groove turned in the top rail 11 or other member which it is desired to connect.

The ends of the stirrups are pin-connected at 13 through the end of the upright or other member 10, the end of the connected member being rounded to permit of it being folded on the pin 13 alongside of the member around which the stirrup 12 passes. The connected members may not only be folded alongside one another but may be turned to one side or the other to clear other attachments.

A back 14- of web material is secured in any suitable manner to the roller 11 and at the lower end. is provided with a loop through which a rod 15 may be passed the ends of which rod 15 project beyond the width of the web to enable them to be passed into hooks 16 secured to the back rod 3 of the seat. The rod 15 being placed in the hooks the roller 11 is turned by hand to tighten the web back 14-. to any desired extent in which position it may be secured by a pivotally mounted pawl 18 which engages a ratchet on the outer end of the top rail 11. This seat with its legs and back constitute the chair proper, which may be supplemented if desired by arms 20 hinge-connected to the uprights 10 by the same hinge previously described and supported at their outer ends by short uprights 21 hinge-connected as before to the member 20 and at their lower ends socketed into tapered holes in the side members 2 of the seat.

If desired the lower ends of the legs 5 may be hinge-connected with the hinge previously described to curved rockers 22.

A strong serviceable and handsome chair is thus provided which may be taken apart as follows: The back with its arms are removed from their sockets and the back web 14 rolled on its red 11, when the supports 21 may by virtue of their hinge-connections be folded up against the arms 25 and against the uprights 10 which again may be folded alongside the roller 11. The legs 5 may be removed from their sockets in the side members 2 of the seat and will fold against the rockers 22, the nature of the hinge connection permitting one leg to be folded along one side and the other along the other. WVhen the legs are removed the side members 2 of the seat may be taken off the rods 3 and 4 and the web seat 6 rolled upon the member 4, in which taken apart condition the chair is susceptible of being packed within a small compass, and is intended to be stowed within the hinged top of a camp table which is the subject of a separate application.

If desired the rods 3 and 4 may be lengthened and perhaps made slightly stronger so as to form a settee to accommodate two or three people.

aving now particularly described my invention and the manner of its construction, I hereby declare that what I claim as new and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent, is:

1. As a portable chair, the combination with a seat composed of side members and front and back rods removably fitting cylindrical apertures in the side members in which the front rods are rotatable and retained therein by the socketed ends of removable legs which socketed ends intersect the cylindrical apertures which receive the seat rod ends, a web seat secured to one of the rod members and susceptible of being rolled on the other, means for checking the roller against backward rotation, a back comprising upright members hinge-connected to a top rail which is rotatable in the hinge connection the uprights being removably socketed into the side members of the seat, a web back secured to the top rail of the back and removably secured to the back rod of the seat.

2. As a portable chair, the combination with a seat composed of side members and front and back rods removably fitted. into the side members one of which rods is rotatable in the side members and a web seat stretched over said rods and susceptible of being rolled on the rotatable rod, means for checking the roller rod against backward rotation, a back consisting of uprights removably socketed into the side frames of the seat and hinge-connected to a top rail which is rotatable in the hinge-connections of the uprights, a web back secured to the top rail and susceptible of being rolled thereon, means for securing the free end of the Web back to the seat, means for checking backward rotation of the top rail, and arms hingeconnected to the uprights of the back which hinge-connections are rotatable on the uprights, arm supports hinge-connected to the arms which arm supports are removably socketed into the side members of the seat.

3. As a portable chair, the combination with a seat composed of side members and front and back rods removably fitted into said side members and a web seat stretched over said rods, legs removably socketed into the side rods of the seat and securing the rods in the side frame, a back the uprights of which are removably socketed into the side members of the seat and hinge-connected to a rotatable top rail, a web back susceptible of being rolled on the top rail of the back and secured to the back rod of the seat, means for checking the top rail of the back against backward rotation, arms hinge-connected to the uprights of the back which hinge-connection is rotatable on the upright, arm supports hinge-connected to the arms which hinge-connection is rotatable thereon said uprights being removably socketed into the side frames of the seats, and rockers hinge-connected to the ends of the legs which hinge-connection is rotatable on the rockers.
