CONVERTIBLE SWING AND CHAIR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 266,492, dated October 24, 1882.

To all whom at may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MASON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and Improved Convertible Swing and Chair, of which the following is a specification.

The subject of my invention is a rocking- I chair convertible into a swing by the use of integral parts of the chair frame or supports as the suspension-arms or hangers of the swing, substantially as hereinafter described.

The invention further relates to details, here-' iuafter described, under which my invention is carried into effect.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device or apparatus shown in the condition ofa rocking-chair. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same converted into a swing. Fig. 3 showsit folded for transportation.

The arms A, back B, seat 0, and front legs, D, may be permanently connected together, as herein shown, or in any other preferred or convenient manner.

E E are basepieces, preferably in the form I of rockers, connected by a cross-bar, F, and

providing sockets G for the reception of the lower ends of the front legs, D, which legs are connected by a cross-piece, H, firmly secured thereto, and resting, when in position, on the base or rockers E, so as to support the downward pressure and limit the descent of the legs. Rigid braces I extend from near the hack of the seat-frame to the lower partot' the legs D.

J J represent back legs or supports, hinged atj to the central portion of the seat ends and at j to the rear extremities of the respective rockers or base-pieces E, to permit the turning of the said rockers into a position in line, or nearly so, with the said supports J when the apparatus is to be converted into a swing, as illustrated in Fig. 2.

Stays or braces K K are hinged to the front end of the rockers at k, and caught by suitable notches, hooks, or like contrivances' on pins, studs, or others fastenings, L, in or near the central portion of the supports J when the apparatus is in the condition of a rockingchair, holding the parts firmly together, and the legs D within their sockets G in the baseframe. These ties or bracesK also turn in line, or nearly so, with the rockers E, to form the upper members of the suspension apparatus, as shown in Fig. 2, and are provided with hooks M for hanging the swing in a doorway or from any attachment-point of moderate height.

Extension rods or bars 0 may be hinged to the ties K at 0, or adapted to slide thereon in any convenient manner, so as to make a swing of greater length when desired foroutside use.

On the outside of the arms A are notches N, into which the hinged back legs or supports, J, spring when the apparatus is converted into a swing, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby holding the seatfirmly to the lower member of the hangers and preventing it tipping therein.

For transportation the apparatus may be folded into compact form, as illustrated in Fig. 3.

Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A combined swing and chair in which portions of the supporting-frame of the chair are articulated and extensible to constitute the hangers of the swing, substantially as setforth.

2. The combination of the chair A B U l), hinged legs J, and base-pieces E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. The combination of the chair A B (J D and hinged legs J, base-pieces E, and stays or braces K, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. The combination of the chair A B G D, hinged legs J, base-pieces E, stays or braces K, and hooks M, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. The combination of the chair A B (l D, hinged legs J, base-pieces E, and lockingnotches N, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

6. lhe combination of the chair A B O D, hinged legs J, base-pieces E, braces K, and extension-hangers O, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
