To all whom it may concern:

Be it knownthat 1, GEORGE H. STRAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Merrill, in the county of Lincoln and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Folding Chair, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Thisinvention has for its object to provide a iolding chair capable of being adjusted so as to serve as a camp chair, a reclining chair, or a couch.

A further object of the invention is to provide means adapted to enable the chair to be folded flat so as to be conveniently transported or stored.

Such objects I accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodyingmy invention; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a plan of the under side of the device shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section enlarged, taken from Fig. 3.

As illustrated in the drawings, a seat 1 is mounted upon standards consisting of oppositely disposed side bars 2 and 3 pivotally connected by a central round 4, and provided on their lower ends with rounds 5 and 6 which connect the bars of one side with those of the opposite side of the chair The upper ends of the seat standards are provided with rounds 7 and 8 upon which is supported the seat 1, which preferably consists of an apron extended around the cross bars 7 and Swith its ends secured to binding rods 9. The ends of the apron are provided with eyes 10 adapted to receive a lacing 11 by means of which the apron is bound firmly to the cross bars 7 and 8. Bars 12 are pivotally mounted at their lower ends on the transverse round 7, and adapted to serve as the side bars for the back of the chair. Auxiliary side bars 13 are pivotally mounted 'upon the outer ends of the side bars 12 by means of a cross rod 14 at points removed from the inner extremity of said auxiliary side bars. Main side bars 15 are pivotally connected at their upper ends with the extremity of the inner ends of said auxiliary bars, and the lower ends of said bars 15 are connected together by means of a transverse rod 16 on which is mounted a foot rest 17 having end cleats 18 which are preferably provided with notches 19 adapted to engage the round 6 of the seat standards. The main side bars 15 are provided with hooks 20 adapted to engage one end of the springs 21, the opposite ends of which are secured to the seat standards in any suitable manner, preferably to the round 8. The auxiliary back section is provided with an apron similar to that of the seat, the ends 22 and 23 of which are bound around the cross rods 24 and 25 of the auxiliary back section and secured in place by means of lacings 26 which engage eyes 27 formed on the ends of said apron. The main back section is also provided with a similar apron 28 shown in Fig. 2, the ends of which are provided with binding rods 29 which are secured in place by means of lacings 30 passing through eyes 31 formed in said section, as shown in Fig. 3. The apron oi the main back section passes around the pivotal rod 14 and around an auxiliary rod 31 which is secured to the rod 7 of the scat standard by means of a hook or link connection 32.

When in use, the auxiliary back section may be [olded over onto the main back section, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby adapting the device to be used as a camp chair. The inclination of the back of the chair may be regulated by adjusting the ends of the springs 21 in the hooks 20 secured to the main side bars 15 of the chair. If desired, the auxiliary back section may be opened out from the position shown in Fig. 1 into that shown in Fig. 2, thereby enabling a person to assume The notches 19 in the foot rest 17 by engaging the round 6 of the seat standards, locks the main side bars in engagement with the seat support and prevents any movement of the back of the chair. Because of the flexible character of the seat 1, the seat standards 2 and 3 may when desired be folded, thereby bringing said standards and the back sections into substantially the same plane so as to enable the chair to be readily transported or stored away.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A chair comprising a folding seat frame, a main back pivoted to said frame, an auxiliary back pivoted short of its inner end to the outer end of the main back, and side bars pivoted to the inner end of the auxiliary back and provided on the lower end with a foot rest.

2. A chair comprising a folding scat frame, a main back pivoted to said frame and provided with a flexible apron, an auxiliary back pivoted short of its inner end to the outer end of the main back and provided with a flexible apron. and side bars pivoted to the inner end of the auxiliary hack and provided with a foot rest.

3. A chair comprising a folding seat frame, 21 main hack pivotaliy attached to said frame, an auxiliary back pivoted short of its inner end to the main back, side bars pivoted to the inner end of the auxiliary back, and springs connecting said side bars with said seat.

4. A chair comprising a folding seat frame, a main back pivotally attached to said frame, an auxiliary back pivotally attached short of its inner end to the outer end of the main back, and side bars pivotnlly attached to the inner end of the auxiliary back, and provided on their lower ends with a foot rest adapted to engage the scat standard.

5. A chair comprising a folding seat frame, a main back pivotaliy attached to said seat frame, an auxiliary back pivoted short of its inner end to the outer end of the main back, side bars pivoted to the inner end of the auxiliary back, and springs connected with the seat frame and adapted to be adjustably attached to said side bars.

6. A chair comprising a folding seat frame, a back pivotally attached to said seat frame by means of a transverse bar an apron rod connected with said transverse bar,

' 10 an auxiliary back pivoted short of its inner end to the main back, an apron extending around said apron rod and the pivotal attachment between said main and auxiliary back, and means for adjustabiy connecting the ends of said apron together.
