NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROLLIN H. ARNOLD, OF HONEOYE, NEW YORK.
FOLDING CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,702, dated September 6, 1881.
Application filed February 2, 1881.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Bel it known that I, ROLLIN H. ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, resident at Honeoye, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which* Figure l is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a Fig. 3 isa side view of the device folded. v
This invention relates to folding chairs; -and it consists inthe construction hereinafter described.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represcnts the side pieces, forming the arms and front legs of the chair, connected at top and bottom by roundsaa. About midway oftheir lengths there are attached to these side pieces pairs of plates B B, between whose lugs b b are pivoted the upper ends, c c, of hind legs, O O, held at the bottom by rounds c. Out in the top and inside of these legs G C are notches D.
E are the side bars ofthe seat, connected at the ends by rounds c c. At their rear ends, z, upon the outside, are trmly secured pins F, projecting laterally.
(No model.)
Upon the inside of the leg portions of sides A, about mid-length, there are cut longitudinal grooves g g, having their ends h 7L turned downward, forming the seats l, as shown.
7c 7c are pins passing through sides E E and projecting into grooves g g, washerspp being preferably interposed.
His apieceot'someexible material, stretched from round a to round c, forming the seat.
By means of the notches D and pins F and grooves g g and pins 7c 7c the seat can be placed in a number of positions up and down, can be leveled, or the front or rear thrown up or down.
This chair can be folded by lifting pins F out of notches D, swinging the seat-frame up and the hind legs down. By pushing the pins k c down in grooves g g the flexible seat is made taut, when the chair is folded, the pins k k catching in lower seat, l.
That I claim is- The combination ot'sides A A, having grooves gg on the inside, hind legs, C O, hinged thereto,
vand having notches D D, side bars, E E, having pins F F and kk to engage with said notches and grooves, and a liexible seat, H, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK W. PROUTY, RUDOLPH KNAUER.
