HAMMOCK-CHAIR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,687, dated April 27, 1886.

Application filed July 9, 1885. Serial No. 171,075.

Be it known that I, LESTER P. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phelps, in'the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammock Chairs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide improved means whereby a hammock-chair may be easily adjusted to an upright or inclined position while the operator remains in the chair, and also allows the foot-rest to be raised or lowered to accommodate both children and adults. These results are accomplished by using the devices hereinafter described.

The chair is cheap, safe, and durable, and does not tip forward when the operator is getting in or out.

The accompanying drawings represent my invention, Figure 1 being a side view of it in a vertical position; Fig. 2, a side view in a horizontal 01' reclining position; Fig. 3,an enlarged plan view of the catch on the arm of chair, and Fig. 4 a similar view of the catch for the foot-rest chain.

The various parts of the invention are referred to by letters, similar letters denoting corresponding parts in the different views.

The letters A A indicate the posts, and aa r I fixed crossbars, which form the back-frame of the chair. 7

B B are posts, and b b are e1oss-bai-s,wlii(eh form the front frame of the chair. These two frames are connected by the arms 0 O and bars 0 c, which are pivoted to the said frames in such a manner that the chair thus formed may be inclined at any desired angle. A strip of canvas, I-I, forms the seat of the chair. Plates D D, furnished with recesses (Z (Z and guards 6, (see Fig. 3,) are secured to the arms 0 G.

F F are the ropes by which the chair is suspended. To the lower end of each cord F is attached a chain or rod, f, having the links or buttons f f. This chain or rod passes through the opening in the plate D and (No model.)

engages the recesses d d in said plate, its lower end being secured to the post A. The cords F are attached to thefront ends of the bars 0 c.

G is a foot-rest, swung to the bars 0 c by chains 9 r ,said chains passing through the staples hit on the bars 0 c. The foot-rest is raised to adapt it to children by drawing up the chain through the wider part of the staple h, When,by dropping the chain into the narrower part, It, of the staple, it is held in position. 1

To change the position of the chair, the sitter presses his feet firmly against the footrest. Then by a slight effort of the body forward the chain or red f may be drawn out from the recess in which it lies. Now, by stretching out the body and limbs the chair sinks easily into a reclining position; or by an opposite effort, throwing the weight of the body into the seat, the chair will rise to an upright position. On releasing the chainfit drops at once into a recess, d, the link entering edgewise, and thus firmly holds the chair in place.

The plate D should be attached to the chair with its recesses (Z (Z opening toward the back of the chair.

I am aware that a folding chair swung by ropes is not new. and I do not broadly claim such as my invention; but

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

I. In a hammock chair, the arms 0 O, plates D D, having recesses d d and guards e e, and the chains ff, having linksff, and the posts A A, arranged substantially as herein described.

2. In a hammockchair, the bars 0 c, staples h it, having the narrowed portions h h, the chains g, and foot-rest G, for the purposes herein set forth.

3. Ajointed hammock or swing chair formed of the posts A A, rungs a a, posts B B, rungs I) b, pivoted arms 0 O, pivoted bars 0 c c 0, seat H, plates D D, having recesses d d and guards e e, ropesF F, chains ff, having links ff, footrest G, chains 9 g, and staples h h, arranged substantially as herein described.
