SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,900, dated May 13, 1890.
Application filed November 7, 1889. Serial No. 829,542; (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS L. PEARSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammock-Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to convertible chairs and hammocks; andit consists in the improved construction hereinafter described and set forth, whereby a simple and efficient arrangement is provided that will be comfortable as a suspended chair and equally so when arranged as a hammock.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvements arranged as a hammock-chair. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, showing the parts ar ranged to serve as a hammock.
A main frame, composed of side standards A A and top cross-beam B, is provided for suspending the chair and hammock proper. This latter has a framework comprising vertical. back sections a a, short front bars Z) 1), upper and lower side bars 0 d, and upper and lower front and rear cross-braces e e ff. The lower side bars cl dextend beyond the front bars I) b for the connection of the brace 6', so as to form a foot-rest thereat, while the upper front brace 6 forms the front of the seat-frame. The upper rear brace f forms the upper cross-bar of the back frame. A section 0, of flexible material, is loosely secured to the braces e and f, so that when the device is used as a chair it will readily conform to the bent form of the occupant. Two hooks g g depend from the beam B, for the engagement of two corresponding hooks h h, carried by a bar D, from the under side of which are suspended two pulleys -i 1' and a central hook j. Around each of the pulleys 'i 2' passes a rope or cable 7:, which, as shown, is continuous, it being readily traced from one of the pulleys downward through one of the side bars 0 c, then transversely beneath the front brace e, up through the other side bar and around the other pulley, downward under the rear end of said side bar and through the rear vertical bars, around the rear end of the other side bar, andfinally over the firstmentioned pulley, and so on as previously traced. A distinct rope or cablel passes from the central hook j around a corresponding hook at on the brace f of the back, the said rope Z passing inteimediately through two perforations in ablock 07., forming a cleat, the free end of said rope after its passage around said block being passed through a third perforation in said block and finally knotted. By pulling the knotted end through said cleat and engaging it under the loop formed by the other engaged portion of the rope, or by disengaging it as may be desired, the rope con=- nection may be shortened or lengthened so as to either hold the suspended frame in a position suitable for use as a chair, or permit its rear to be turned substantially horizontal so that it can act as a hammock. All the connections of the several vertical and hori zontal side bars are pivotal, so that said bars may move relative to each other and enable the foot rest, front bar 6, and upper rear bar f to be brought substantially to a line with each other and thereby adjust the flexible strip to a horizontal position and enable the entire device to serve as a hammock. \Vhen of course the frame is extended, the loop-connection of the rope or cable with the cleat is lengthened to provide a more extended connection between the cross-beam and the said brace f. Of course when the frame is ex tended for hammock purposes the braces e and f are necessarily brought nearer to each other, and in order to connect them relatively to each other a chain 19 is connected per manently to the brace e and is adapted to have one of its links engage a pin or projection g on the brace f.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that the device embodying my improvements is simple as well as serviceable, and may be quickly and conveniently operated to serve 'either as a comfortable suspension-chair or equally comfortable hammock.
I claim- 1. The combination, in a convertible chair and hammock, of the top beam having pul leys, a chair-frame comprising pivotally-connected vertical and horizontal bars a Z) e (Z and intermediate braces, the bars (1, projecting for the attachment of a foot-picce, a rope suspending the chair and passing over the pulleys, and independent adjustable connections 1, 12, and p, the connection Z-n regulating the height of the back and the connection 1) securing the bars of the main frame in the position to which they may be pivot-ally moved, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a convertible chair and hammock, of the top beam having pulleys, a chair-frame comprising pivotally-connected vertical and horizontal side bars a b c (Z and cross-braces c c and ff, the side bars (Z projecting at their front for the bar 6, an endless rope is, passing over the pulleys and through the chair-frame at the front and rear thereof, together with independent adjustable connections Z, a, and p, the connections Z a regulating the height of the back and the connection 1) securing the bars of the main frame in the position to which they may be pivotally moved, substantially as set forth.
