Be it known that I, JOHN M. LINE, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Springield, in the county of Greene and State of e Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds or Cots, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in is folding beds or cots, of the type shown in Letters Patent No. 1,492,254, granted to me under date of April 29, 1924.

An important object of the invention is to provide simple and reliable means, whereby 13 the effective length of the transverse supporting bars, may be varied, to fit aut-omobiles of different sizes.

A further object of the invention is to improve the construction of the folding legs i of the cot or bed, with the view of simplifyprovide improved and simplified means for holding the bottom of the bed taut.

In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral designates a pair of transverse supporting members, which are identical. Each supporting member embodies a transverse bar or beam, preferably formed in. two sections 11, which are hinged together, at their inner ends, at 12, whereby the outer ends of the beam sections 11 may swing downwardly below the horizontal, but cannot swing upwardly beyond the sama is a perspective view of one of In order that the length of the transverse beam may be varied, I provide extension feet or elements 12 disposed near and beneath the outer ends of the beam sections 11, as shown. The feet 12 have pivotal connection at 13, with links or straps 14, the upper ends of which are pivoted to the beam extension 11, as indicated at 15. It is thus apparent that the extension feet 12', are permanently attached to the beam sections 11, and may be swung longitudinally of the same, to inner or outer positions, as shown.

The numeral 16 designates folding legs, which are inverted U-shaped in cross section. The base of these legs is cut away, near and spaced from their lower ends, providing knuckles 17, arranged upon opposite sides of the beam sections 11, and pivotally connected therewith,` as shown at 18. At their upper ends, the bases of these legs eX- tend to the free ends of the same, and have notches 17', for the reception of bolts 18, which are carried by longitudinal beams 19. These beams have the bottom 20, attached thereto, by any suitable means. It is thus seen that a very strong and convenient connection is effected between the outer ends of the legs 16, and the beams 19, and as the beams 19 tend to move inwardly upon these legs, it is not necessary that the bolts 18 have clamping engagement with the legs, but it is suliicient that the bolts be simply inserted in the notches 17. This provides a construction which will permit of the convenient and ready separation of the beams 19 and the legs.

The numeral 21 designates flexible elements inthe form. of a chain, having `flat links. The upper ends of these chains are attached to the beams 19, while selected links are adapted to be inserted upon pins 22, which are attached to the ends of the beam sections 11, as shown.

In the use of the device, the transverse bars are arranged upon the tops of the sides of the automobile, and the bed or cot is supported within the top of the automobile, as clearly shown in Figure 1. It is obvious that the longitudinal beams 19 and top 20 may be readily separated from the legs 16, and the bottom 2O rolled about these beams. The legs 16 may be folded down upon the beam sections 11, which in turn may be folded transversely upon themselves,

' Having thus described my invention, I claim:

l.
