GEORGE BOHON SCHMITT, OF NEWARK, OHIO.
. .FOLDABLE TABLE.
Application filed July 20,
This invention relates to folding tables, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a table of such class capable of being folded in a compact manner when not desired for use and conveniently extended for use and expeditiously latched in extended position.
Further objects of the invention are to rovide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a folding table which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, com.- pact, thoroughly eflicient in its use, readily extended and folded, and comparatively in expensive to manufacture. V
Withthe foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arran ement of parts as hereinafter more speci cally described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters (1 e n o t e corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is an inverted plan, view of the table when extended and with thetop there: of, which is formed of a pair of sections, in non-latched position.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view of the table and with the top thereof in latched position. I p I Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 taken at right angles to the latter;
Figure 4 is an elevation of the supporting section of the table in folded position.
Figure 5 is an elevation ofthe sectionaltable top in'folded position. Y g j Figure 6is afragmentar view in plan of the supporting sectlon of t e'table extended and illustrating a latch therefor.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary view in elevationof thesupporting section of the table illustrating a retaining bar connected therewith for maintaining articles stacked on the supporting section of the table. 1
Referring to the drawings in detail "the foldable table includes a foldable supporting section comprising a body portion consisting of four oblong body members 1, 2, 3 and 4 hinged together at their ends and each of which is of the same length and same width.
1927. Serial a... 207,148.
The body members are disposed at right angles with respect to each other and are arranged in pairs, onepair formed by the body members 1, 3 and the other pair formed by the body members 2, 4. One end of the body member 1 abuts against the inner face of the body member 3 at a point slightly removed from an end of the latter and one end of a body member 4 abuts against the inner faceof the body member 2 at a point slightly removed from one end of the latter. I One end of the members 1 and 4 abut against the inner faces of the members 3 and 2 respectively, in proximity to an end of said members 3 and 2 when the body'portion is extended in themanner as illustrated in Figure 1. One
end of the body member 2 is spaced from one end of the body member 1 and one end of the body member fl is spaced from one end of the body member3 and the said members are hinged together in a manner to provide for the spacing arrangement just referred to. F ourhinge elements are employed for connecting the body members together and each hinge element consists of a pair of straps 5, 6 pivoted together as at 7 The stra 5 is of greater length than the strap 6. Tl fe hinge elements are referred to generally b the reference characters 8, 9, 10 and 11. he short straps 60f the elements 8 and 9 are fixedly secured to the inner face of the body member 1 and theelongated straps 5 of the elemerits 8, 9 are fixedly secured to the inner face of the body members 2, 3, respectively. The short straps 6 of the elements 10, 11 are securedto the inner face of the body member4 and the elongated straps 5 of the elements 10, 11 are secured to the inner facesof the body members 2, 3, respectively. The
shown in Figure 1, the body member 3 in proximity to one end thereof is provided with a pair of superposed, laterally extending eyes 12,- seeFigures 6 and 7 adapted to ex tend through a hinged plate 13 provided with a pair of openings 14. The plate 13 is pivotally connected as at 15 to a plate which abuts against one end of the body member 3 and is fixedly secured in proximity to the upper end of a supporting leg to be presently referred to.
The supporting section further includes two pairs of supporting legs. The legs of one pair are indicated at 15, 16 and the legs of the other pair at 16', 18. The legs of each pair are connected, together, in proximity to their lower ends, by a. brace member 19. Each of the legs of each of said pairs is mortised, as at 20, at the upper portion thereof to provide a seat 21. The mortise is of the same height as the body member. The body member 1 is mounted upon the seats formed on the legs 15, 16 and the body member 4: is mounted on the seats 21 formed in the supporting legs 17, 18. The body member 2 abuts against the supporting leg 17 and the body member 3 abuts against the supporting leg 16. The plate, in which the plate 13 is hinged, is indicated at 22 and which is secured to the supporting leg 16.
Vvhcn the body portion is extended and with the supporting legs arranged in the position shown in Figure 1, the plate 13 is shifted against the body member 3, whereby the eyes will extend through the openings or slots 14- and. any suitable means can be passed through the eyes for the purpose of latching the body portion in extended position.
The table top can be of any suitable contour, and by way of example is shown square, and it is formed of two sections 23, 2 each provided with a pair of strips 25, 26 secured to the lower face thereof. Each pair of strips is hingedtogetheras at 27, and by this arrangement the top can be folded if desired. When the top is extended the strips of each pair abut and the combined length of each pair of strips is such as to extend from the body member 2 to the body member 3 and under such conditions setting up a snug fit when the extended top is mounted upon the supporting sections as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3. A latch 28 is employed for detachably connecting the sections of the top together when extended. The top is of an area materially greater than the area of the body portion when the latter is extended. The top is removably mounted upon the body portion of the supporting sections when the latter are extended. v
Each supporting leg is provided at its top with an outwardly extending loop 28, for the reception of a vertically disposed rod or retaining means adapted for maintaining articles stacked upon the supporting section, when the table top is not employed.
is thought th many advantages of a foldable table, in accordance with this invention, can be readily unders ood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

2. A foldable table comprising a body portion formed of two pairs of body members spaced from each other, the body members of each pair disposed at right angles from each other and hinged together, one of the body members of each pair having one end abutting against the inner face of the other body member of the pair and means for hinging one pair of body members to the other pair and for maintaining them in spaced relation, a pair of supporting legs secured to the ends of a body'member of each pair, means carried by the upper end of one of said legs and detachably connected with one of said body members for latching said pairs of body members together for maintaining said body portion in extended position, and a sectional lOl) hinged top having means on its inner face for abutting-the inner faces of the body mem bers when the top is mounted. on the body portion and extended.
3. A foldable table comprising a bodyportion formed of two pairs of body members spacedfrom each other, the body members of each pair disposed atright angles to each other and hinged together, means for hin-ging one pair-of body members to the other pair and for maintaining one pairof body memberssp'aced' from the other pair, a pair of supporting legs secured to one of the body.
members of each of said pairs, and means carried by the upper end of one of said legs and connected with one of the body members for latching said pairs of body members together to maintain said body portion in extended position. p
4. A foldable table comprising a body portion formed of two pairs of body members spaced from each other, the body members of each pair disposed at right angles to each other and hinged together, means for hinging one pair of body members to the other pair and for maintaining one pair of body members spaced from the other pair, a pair of supporting legs securedto one of the body having means on its inner face abutting members of each of said pairs, means carried against the inner face of said body portion by the upper end of one of said legs and when the top is mounted on the body portion 1 connected with one of the body members and extended to maintain the top in position. for latching said pairs of body members to- In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature gether to maintain said body portion in exhereto.
