Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 12, 1911. Serial No. 638,129.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Covered Folding Cots, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in cots.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a knock-down cot which may be folded into a small bundle so that the same may be readily transported.

Another object of the invention is to provide a cot primarily intended for use by hunters, trappers, tourists or the like, which is provided with a cover which may be readily positioned over the cot when the same is in its set-up position, and which may be also carried with the cot when the same is in its knocked-down position.

With the above obj cats in view and others as will appear as the description progresses,

the improvement resides in the novel con-' struction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the drawings accompanying this specification, there has been illustrated a simple and approved embodiment of the invention, and in which drawings- Figure l is a side elevation of a cot constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is an end View of the same, the canopy being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the frame, the canopy as well as the sectional bottom being removed. Fig. 4 is a sectional view upon the line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan view illustrating the manner offoldingthe frame as well as the sections of the bottom within the canopy. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the frame holder, the sectional bottom and canopy being indicated by the dotted lines. Fig. 7 are fragmental sections upon theline 7 7 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 8 is a sectional View upon the line 8-8 of Fig. 1. Fig. 9 is a detail central vertical sectional view taken through one of the joints of the sectional frame. Fig. 10 is a transverse sectional view of one of the members of the sectional frame taken on a plane adjacent the supporting member 12. Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

The improved cot comprises primarily side rails which are supported by suitable lugs when the device is in its set-up position. The side rails, in the showing in the drawings, comprise three separate sections, designated respectively by the

numerals

1, 2 and 3. It is, of course, to be understood that these rails are positioned upon each side of the cot, and the sections 1 and 2 are connected together through the medium of an enlarged rule joint t,'while the sections 3 and 2 areconnected together by a smaller rule joint 5. By this arrangement, it will be noted that the section 3 may be folded upon the section 2 and the section 1 folded over the said section 3 when the device is to be collapsed. The rails, each comprise a member which is U-shaped in cross section, and the depending arms provided by this structure, are enlarged upon their inner faces adjacent the tops thereof or otherwise provided with shoulders 6. The edges of the canvas bottom 7 are provided with securing plates 8, the same being of a width suflicient to contact with the shoulders 6 and to sustain the bottom 7 upon the side rails of the device when it is inserted within the U shaped rails. It is to be here stated that the bottom 7 comprises a plurality of sections, three in number, and the said sections are of a length equal to the

1, 2 and 3 of the side rails. F urthermore, if desired, and as illustrated in the figures of the drawings, the joints 4 and 5 may be formed, by depending the side members of the cross section of the U-shaped sections, say 1 and 2, while the opposite ends of the sections 2 and 3 may be downturned to provide the butts which engage with the depending portions of the said rail sections Patented. 1 and 2. The pintles 38 which connect the butts of the rule joints are also adapted to receive the eye 9 of a brace member 10. The eyes 9, are connected with the pintles 38 between the side arms of the U-shap-ed rail sections, the brace rod 10 extending downwardly between the said sections and having its extremity offset to provide a hook 11, which will presently be set forth.

12 and 13 designate a pair of supporting members which are hingedly connected together as at 14, and which have their free ends formed with offset portions 15, the latter engaging between the arms of the cross section of the U-shaped rails and being connected thereto in any desired or preferred manner. 12 and 13 is a lock brace 16. This brace comprises a pair of rods 17 and 18. The rod 17 is pivotally connected with the supporting members 12 as at 19 while the rod 18 is pivotally connected with the member 13 as at 20 while both of the members 17 and 18 are centrally connected through the medium of a rule joint 21. Pivotally connected, as at 22 to the supports 12 and 13 and above the pivotal connection of the lock brace 16 are the

23 and 24. These leg members are provided with openings through which the ofiset fingers or hooks 11 of the brace member 10 are projected, and the said hook portions of the brace members, may, if desired, be threaded for the reception of suitable nuts, or the said hook may be provided with an opening to receive a cotter pin or the like and whereby the brace is effectively sustained upon the leg. By an arrangement as above described, it will be noted that when the joint 20 of the lock brace 18 is broken the same can be only folded outwardly and against the sides of the supporting

12 and 13, and when the sections comprising the side rails are swung upon each other, as heretofore described, the cot may be folded into a very small compass, and as the device is to be constructed of light material, the same may be easily carried as well as set up. Again, if desired, the supporting members may be disconnected from the rails, and eye members comprising the legs may be folded or collapsed independently of the side rails and the bot-tom sections carried thereby.

One of these rods preferably has its ends formed with an eye while the opposite and co-acting rod has its extremity formed with a hook adapted to engage with the eye of the first-named member. These rods are adapted to form the end supports for a canopy 28, and the said rods may be, and preferably are, connected together with each other when swung to a set-up position, through the medium of a longitudinally extending rod 29. The canopy 28 is constructed by a single piece of suitable material such as canvas or the like, and the said canopy comprises what may be termed side members which have their extremities formed with hooks 30, the latter adapted for engagement with suitable openings 31 formed adjacent the lower extremity of the leg members 23. The ends of the canopy comprise oppositely arranged flaps 31 and 32, and the said flaps, when the canopy is positioned upon the cot are adapted to have their edges overlie one another, so that the occupant of the cot is completely covered by the canopy and is effectively protected from rain, wind or the like.

It will be noted by reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings, that the said canopy comprises a substantially U-shaped structure in cross section, and it will thus be noted that rain, snow or other moisture will readily slide or be guided toward the ground by the inclined sides of the said canopy. The canopy also covers the legs of the structure and their attachments so that accidental interference with these parts is thus prevented.

From the above description taken in connect-ion with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device, the cheapness of construction thereof, as well as its many advantages will, it is thought, commend themselves to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain without further detail of description.

Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim is:

1. A cot for the purpose set forth comprising a fabric bottom constructed in sections, side rails comprising hinged sections and supporting each of the sections of the bottom, the sections of the said rails being connected together through the medium of rule joints, the said rule joint-s varying in size to permit the rail sections being folded compactly one upon the other, supporting members pivotally connected together and secured to the rail sections, a locking brace pivotally connected with each of the sup porting members, said locking brace comprising a pair of members connected together through the medium of a rule joint, leg members each pivotally connected with one of the supports, the brace members connected with the hinges of the rails and with venting the outward movement of the legs, 10 the leg members. and a canopy for the cot.
