'(No' model.) i L ful Improvements in a Combined Folding Cot and Tent; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to a combined folding cot and tent,'the objects being to provid'e'a' device of the character named which may be readily folded into compact form for transportation and will when in unfolded position provide a comfortable bed supported well above the ground and a firm well-braced shelter-tent.

The construction of the combined cot and tent will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specificatiomandits novel features will be specified and defined in the appended claims.

The frame of the cot comprises parallel side bars 1 and end cross-bars 2, connecting said side bars. v

The cot is supported by legs 3, pivotally. secured at their upper ends to the'inner sides of the side bars 1 and connected in pairs by crossed braces 4, the upperends 9 of which extend beyond the outer sides of---theflegs to limit the pivotal mov'ementof the-legsin on'e direction, said ends contacting withthe side bars 1, as shown in Fig.2, when said legs have reached a proper position, thereby preventing a collapsing of the bed in an obvious man'- ner. The lower ends of the legs 3 'when the latter are folded up, as'shown in Fig. 6, are engaged by pivoted catches 10, and the lower edges of the side bars 1 are formed withrecesses 11 to receive the projecting ends 9 of the diagonal crossed braces 4,'Fig. 5.

lZdesign'ates the bottom of thelcot, consist- .ing of a sheet of canvasor other suitable fabric, the ends of which are permanently secured to adjustable cross-bars 13, connected tothe cross-bars2 of the cot by screw-bolts 14, the heads ofwhi'ch rest in recesses formed on the outer sides. of the bars 2,. while their inner threadeden'ds, which extend through the bars 13,are provided with nuts, by means of whichthe bars 13 are adjusted to tension the bottom 12 when it becomes slack from use.

The side supports of the tent consist of frames or bails 5, the ends of which are pivotally secured to the frame of the cot, as shown at 15. These frames 5 are adapted to be folded down, overlapping each other," as best shown 1 in Fig. 3, and to be heldin'this position by hooks 16, projecting from the side bars 1 of the cot-frame.

The tent-cover is supported by the pivoted bails 5 and by curb-rods 6 and a ridge frame or bail 7 The horizontal portion of the bail 7 may be secured to the tent-cover, and the depending ends of said bail are forked to engage the horizontal portions of the folding bails or frames 5, as shown in Figs. 5 and S. The curb-rods 6 may be also secured to the tent-cover and are recessed at their ends, as shown in Fig. 9, toadapt them to fit upon the bails 5.

The tent-cover is secured in any suitable manner at each end of the cot-frame to transverse bars 18, which are screwed or bolted in an obvious manner to the outer sides of the bars 2.

The upper portion or ridge of the tent-cover is tightly distended by turning the ends of the ridge-bail 7 down against the bails 5, the connection between the forked ends of the bail 7 tending to spring the horizontal portions of said bails 5 downward, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 5, thus supporting the cover firmly above the bails or frames 5, which latter are sufficiently resilient to permit of this movement and to compensate for slack or tension of the cover.

To fold the tent, the side flaps 19 are turned back over the roof of the tent, as shown in Fig. 2, and the rods 6 and hail 7 are disengaged from the bails 5 to permit the cover to be folded down upon the cot. The two bails 5 are then folded down and snapped under the fastenings 1G to firmly bind the tent-cover upon the cot.

In order to provide more room, the arrangement illustrated in Fig. & maybe resorted to that is to say, two cot-s and tents may be placed side by side at a short distance apart, and the space between them may be closed by a fly 20, or a single. cover may be used with cross-rods and a ridge-support in a manner similar to the curb-rods 6 and hail 7, the position thereof being indicated at the

21 and 22 in Fig. 4, the ridge-support preferably used being shown in Fig. 12 and designated by the numeral 22.

It will be apparent that my improved c011- struction provides ready means for folding and unfolding the tent and cot and also for tensioning or bracing the same to insure a firm and secure structure.

I claim 1. In a combined tent and cot, the combination with the cot-frame, of bails pivotally secured thereto and adapted to overlap each other; means for securing said bails in folded position, and braces for supporting the tentcover above said bails.

2. In a combined tent and cot, the combination with the side bars of the frame, formed with recesses on their inner sides; of legs pivotally secured to said side bars, and connected in pairs by crossed braces, the upper ends of which project beyond the legs to support the side-bars; and catches for securing the free ends of the legs.

3. In a combined tent and cover, the combination with the cot-frame, of a tent-frame comprising overlapping pivoted bails; a bail secured to the ridge of the tent-cover, and adapted to rest upon said pivoted bails; crossbraces also secured to the tent-cover and adapted to rest upon the pivoted bails; and means for securing the bails in their overlapping or folded position.

4. In a combined tent and cot, the combination with the cot-frame, ot' a tent-cover the ends of which are secured to the ends of said cot-frame; folding frames or bails pivotally secured to the cot-frame and adapted to overlap each other when folded; a ridge-support comprising a bail having forked ends to engage the folding bails; and cross-rods recessed to fit upon said pivoted bails; and devices for securing the pivoted bails in folded position.
