T; W. B. MURRAY & G. J. BAKER Folding Got. No. 228,920. Patented Jun15,18s0.
UNITED STATES PATENT 'Fricn.
THOMAS W. B. MURRAY AND CALEB J. BAKER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING COT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,920, dated June 15, 1880. Application filed March 20,1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS W. B. MUR- RAY and CALEB J. BAKER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cots; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to camp or cot beds; and it consists in the improvements in the construction of the same hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective of the cot-frame expanded. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the folding frame to which the canvas or textile fabric is secured, showing the head-rest elevated; and Fig. 3 is a view of the cot folded for packing for transportation. Fig. 4' is an end view, and Fig. 5 is a detail view, showing the construction of the canvascovered frame and one of the clamps in which the same is adjusted.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the cot-frame for supporting the canvas; and it consists of two sides of lazy-tongs, B, connected by X-shaped arms C, pivoted at their intersections, and connected by pivot-hinges D to the ends of the arms forming the lazy-tongs B, so that when the lazy-tongs B are closed the X-shaped arms C will fold in and draw the sides B together at the same time that they are being closed.
At the connections between the lazy-tongs B and X-shaped arms C, at their upper ends, are provided clamps E, consisting of metallic straps bent to form hooks, which, together with the upper ends of the arms of the lazyton gs B, form receptacles F, for the reception of the side rails, G, of the cot H.
The side, rails, G, consist each of three or more sections, I, hinged together so as to be capable of being folded into small compass. The flexible cover of the cot H is secured to the outer edges of the side rails only, thus leaving the said side rails free to enter the receptacles F, in which they are adjusted when the cot is extended for use. The head end of the covering H is left disconnected from the side rails and provided at its extreme end with a hem, b, forming a sleeve for the reception of a rod, L, provided at its ends with studs l, by which it maybe adjusted and retained in the slotted ends a of arms K, pivoted to the outer edges of the side rails, G, at points under the free ends of the flexible covering H. By this construction the arms K, when the cot is extended, as in Fig. 1, form braces, which hold the free ends of the flexible cover H in an inclined position, thus forming an elastic and comfortable head-rest.
To prevent the arms or braces K from being raised too high they are connected by strings c c with the ends of the side rails, G.
To place the cot in a condition to be occupied, the supporting-frame is first extended partially, the side rails are entered into their appropriate receptacles beneath the clamps E, and the folding frame A extended until the side rails are firmly clamped. The head-rest can be placed in position at any time.
When desired to pack the cot away it can be folded by removing the side rails,'so that it may be placed in an ordinary trunk.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
The combination, with a folding supporting-frame consisting of sides of lazy-tongs connected by pivoted X -shaped arms, and provided with bent metal straps, which, in connection with the upper ends of the lazytongs, form hooks or receptacles, of a cot consisting of side rails made up of several sections hinged together and a flexible cover secured to the outer edges of and uniting said side rails, as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS W. B. MURRAY.
CALEB J. BAKER.
