UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID R. NICHOLS, OF ALEXANDRIA BAY, NEW YORK.
FOLDING COT-BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,306, dated February 1, 1881.
Application filed October 30, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID R. NICHOLS, of Alexandria Bay, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Folding Cot-Bedsteads and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a view of the frame folded. Fig. 3 is a view of the pillow rolled up.
This invention relates to cot-bedsteads and it consists in the construction of the bedstead and the pillow attachment hereinafter specified.
1n the annexed drawings, A represents the bedstead B, the pillow.
The bedstead consists of the side rails, C 0, end rails, D D, and legs E E. The side rails, O G, are made angular, and to their edges is fastened a sheet of canvas, carpet, or any suitable material forming the bed-bottom. The end rails, D D, are hinged at their middles, at d, and pivoted at their ends 0 e to the side rails, O G. The legs E E are held to the side rails by hinges a, and are held in an extended position by pins 0 and latches h. The object of this construction is to form a cot which canbe readily folded and which will occupy a small space when taken down. For this purpose the latches h are loosed from pins 0 and the legs E E are folded upon the side rails. The side rails, O G, are then moved together, the hinges d permitting the end rails,
(No model.)
D D, to fold upon themselves. These end rails in this folded position are then turned outward, upward, and down in between the side rails, O C, where they lie snug and operate to lock the device close, so that the side rails cannot be moved apart until the end rails are turned back again.
The pillow B consists of flexible material b stretched between the arms at n, supported upon the legs 17 19. These legs are curved downward and outward, and have at their ends a shape corresponding to the side rails, O 0, whereby they catch said rails snugly and the pillow is held firmly. The downward and outward curve given to the legs 19 p, which are pivoted to the arms,is such as to permit their being folded up against the arms an suitable for packing, and their outer catches, t t, prevent their slipping by each other when folded.
What I claim is The bedstead-frame A, consisting of the side rails, O G, hinged legs E, pins 0, and
latches h, end rails, D D, hinged at d, and pivoted to the ends of the side rails, O C, whereby said end rails can be folded and turned within the side rails, O G, substantially as described.
2. The pillow B, consisting of flexible material b, arms n n, legs 19 p, pivoted thereto, curved'downward and outward, and having catches t 15, substantially as described.
In testimony that 1 claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
