SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,843, dated August 25, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known. that I, N UMON N. HoR'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cots, of which the following is a specification.

My improved cot is made up of two rectangular frames of about equal size hinged together, one provided with two sets of hinged legs and the other with one of such sets. In each case metallic braces are provided for holding the legs rigid when upright. The legs on the supplementary frame are provided with hinged prolongations, which, when the cot is used for hospital purposes, are employed for maintaining it in a reclining or an upright position. Hinged metallic braces are also provided for maintaining the rigidity of these supplementary supports.

In order that my invention maybe more full y understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a view with the supplemental frame forming the back in nearly upright position. Fig. II is a View of the same in reclining posture. Fig. III is a perspective view of the cot with mattress in place. Fig. IV is a view of the cot folded for transportation orstorage. In this view the supplemental legs of the hinged frame are omitted.

l is the main rectangular frame, having two sets of legs, 2 8, each hinged so as to be capable of folding toward each other, as shown in Fig. IV. W'hen vertical, the legs 2 3 are maintained rigid by means of metallic braces 4, hinged to the side bars of the frame 1, and having notches in their ends engaging over studs on the legs.

5 is the supplemental frame, hinged to the main frame atG, and provided with a single pair of legs, 7, which are of the same length with the legs 2 3, as shown in Fig. I.

Hinged to the legs 7 so as to fold toward each other are supportingbars 8, serving as prolongations of the legs 7 when it is desired to raise the frame 5 so as to bring the patient to a reclining or a sitting position. These two positions of the cot are shown in Figs. 1 and II, respectively.

Metallic rods or brackets 9, hinged to the sides of the frame 5, are provided with a se ries of notches, 10, to engage over studs on the legs 7. The said legs may thus be held at any angle to the frame 5, according to the shape it is desired the cot to assume.

Metallic braces 11 have notches near their ends to engage over studs on cross-brace 12 of the legs 7 when the cot is in the position shown in Figs. I and II. \Vhen, however, the supplemental legs 8 are folded up, as shown in Fig. III, the said notches may be looked over studs 13 on legs 8 to retain such legs to folded position.

Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In combination with the section 1, having two sets of legs, 2 3, the section 5, hinged thereto and having hinged legs 7 opening in a plane parallel with the length of the cot, the braces 9, for staying said legs, prolongations 8, hinged to the legs 7 and opening in a plane transverse to the length of the cot, and the braces 11, for st-aying said prolongations, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of a two-part hinged frame, legs 2 3 7 hinged thereto, prolonga tions 8, hinged to the legs 7, braces 11, for staying said prolongations, and. braces 9, each having a series of notches, 10, for e11- gaging with said legs 7, whereby they are stayed while supporting the head at any elevation, as set forth.

3. In combination with the section 1, having two sets of legs, 2 3, the section 5, hinged thereto and having hinged legs 7, and the braces 9, for staying said legs, the prol0ngations 8, hinged to the legs 7 and opening in opposite directions in a plane transverse to the length of the cot, and the braces 11, for staying said prolongations, substantially as set forth.
