UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY D. HARD, CHARLES H. HARD, AND JOHN CRAWFORD, OF QNEIDA,
NEW YORK.
FOLDING COT.
SPECIFICATION forming pari: of Letters Patent No. 373,363, dated November 15,-188'7. Application tiled February 28, 1887. Serial No. 220,209. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY D. HARD, CHARLES H. HARD, and JOHN CRAWFORD, of Oneida, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Gets; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ofreferenee marked' thereon, which form part of this specification,
in which- Figure l is a perspective view of ohr improved folding cot ready for use. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section. Fig. tis a plan View of cot, showing same folded. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 represent details showing the construction of the head-rest. Fig. 8 is a detail section through the joint of the legs.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in folding cots, and has especial reference to the devices for bracing the legs of the cot when opened, and to an improved head-rest for the same. y
Theinvention consists in the novel construetion and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly specif fied in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A A designate the respective side rails of the cot, to which the side edges of the web or ticking X are secured in the usual well-known manner.
B B are the legs, pivoted to the said rails near the head of the cot. The said legs each has preferably secured to its upper end a plate, b, which is pivoted at b upon the'inner surface of the corresponding side rail in such manner that the leg can be turned up against the inner surface of the side rail when the cotisfolded.
-The legs B B are pivoted together at c at cured upon thelegs B B over said recesses, the
edges of the slots in each plate extending inward over the edges of the recess, fora purpose hereinafterexplained.
D D' are legs similarl to; the legs B B', and similarly pivoted together at e. Their upper ends have secured to them plates d, similar to the plates b, and similarly pivoted at d d to the side rails,A A. The pivot-joints d d are at equal distances from the rear ends of the side rails as the pivot-points b b are from thc front or head ends of the same. The leg D has above its pivot-point e a longitudinal recess, E, and the leg Dr has below its pivot-point a recess, E', similar to the recesses C O,and similarly overlaid by slotted guard-plates e e.
F is abar or rod, having its upper end bent outwardly horizontally and journaled in the side rail, A', near the head end thereof, so as tov turn thereon. The lower end of the rod F is bent horizontally, so as to enter the recess C in the'leg B,and is provided with ahead, f, which is retained in the recess by the edges of the slotted guard-plate c. Gis a similar rod, having its bent upper end journaled iu the side of the rail A,near the foot end of the same, and provided with a head, g, on its bent lower end, which travels in the recess E' of leg D,and is retained therein by the edges of the slotted guard-plate e.
F and G designate rods similar to rods F and G. Rod F has its upper end journaled in the rail A inward of the legs B B', and has its headed lower end engaging the recess C in leg B by means of plate c', as shown. The rod G is similarly engaged with rail A and leg D,and is secured on the cot to the inner side of the le s.
gH H are the head-rest bars, each attached to the corresponding side rail, A A, near the 'head end thereof, by means of the short rods h h. There are two of these rods for each bar. The inner ends of the rods are bent at right angles upward and journaled in the lower surface of the bars H, and the outer ends of the rods are bent similarly downward and journaled in the upper edge of the corresponding head-rail, as shown. The rods h hbeingequal in length, the bars H can be turned upward and inward in relation to the siderails,or outward against the latter for transportation.
X is the web or cloth for the head-rest. When the bars H are turned upward and inward, this' web is raised and tightened and forms a suitable support for the head.
In folding the cot for transportation thetwo side rails are brought together, folding the legs of each set upon the other. The legs are then folded lupward and inward against the side rails, the heads fg of the rods F G slipping upward in the recesses C E, respectively, and the heads fg of rods F G slipping downward, or toward the feet of their respective legs B D in the recesses C E thereof. The bars H H are folded down against the side rails and the web X wound around the front end of the latter. This folds the device in very small compass.
It will be observed from the foregoing that when the cot is opened, as described, the rods F F, standing from the opposite side rails of the cot and on opposite sides of legs B B', strongly brace the latter and prevent their shifting out of proper supporting position when the cot is opened, and the rods G G perform a similar office for legs D D'. It will be further observed that the rods form additional supports for the side ba'rs by transferring strain from their points of connection with said bars 25 directly to the legs of the cot. By the described construction it is obvious that the cot when opened is held rigidly, and the legs cannot be knocked down or turn under while the cot is occupied.
Having described our invention, wc claim- 3o A folding cot comprising parallel side rails, pairs of crossed pivoted legs pivoted to said rails, and two diagonal bracing and supporting rods slidingly attached on opposite sides of each pair of legs above and below the pivot of 35 said legs and to the side rails, whereby when the cot is extended the lower end of one rod of each pair will lie above the crotch of the legs and the lower end of the otherrod will be below said crotch, substantially as described. 4o
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signaturesin presence of two witnesses.
HENRY D. HARD. CHAS. H. HARD. JOHN CRAVFOBD.
