Description

.March 10, 1925- 1,529,017 G. MATSUSHITA COMBINED COLLAPSIBLE CHAIR AND BED Filed April 1, 1924 v Patented Mar. 10, 1925.
UNl'lED STATES GENTARO MATSUSHITA, OF SELMA, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINED GOLLAPSIBLE CHAIR AND BED.
Application filed April 1,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GnN'rARo MA'rsUsHrrA, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at Selma, in the county of Fresno and tate of California, have invented a new and useful Combined Collapsible Chair and Bed, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a combined chair andbed, and specifically to one which may be setup as a chair or a bed, and which may be folded in a more compact form for packing and shipping, and to one provided with means for securely holding in desired relation the several parts in any of its collapsed or set up positions.
Another object is to so proportion and form the several cooperating parts of the device that when it is in collapsed form, they shall lie closely contiguous and compact to eliminate as far as practicable, any liability of injury when being shipped in collapsed form, and which shall be securely locked when in position for use asa chair or portable cot.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device as set up for use as a cot. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the device as set up for use as a chair. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of-the device in collapsed position for shipment. Fig. 4 is a vertical mid-section of the device when set up as a chair.
Referring to the drawings, I construct a central frame section 11, formed by the side bars 12', brackets 13, and a metal cross-bar 14. The bar 14, forms the top of the device, when set up as a chair. A head frame section 15, is formed by the side bars 16, and by a cross-bar 17, and is connected to the central section by hinges 18. The foot-frame section 10, is formed by the side bars 19, and a cross-bar 20, and is connected to the central section by hinges 21. Supporting elements 22, connected by a cross-bar 23, are connected by hinges 24, with the foot section 10, and, when the device is set up as a chair, form the front legs thereof, and when the device is set up as a cot, serve to support the foot thereof.
When in the set up position, the supporting elements 25, connected by a brace 26, and connected to central frame section 15, by a pivot bar 27 serve as the rear legs of the chair, and as a support for the head of the cot. A canvas fabric 28, is connected 1924. $eria1No. 703,432.
at one end to pivot bar 27, and at the opposite end to cross-bar 20. When the device is set up as a chair, the fabric element passes over cross-bar 14, at the top of the chair. Arranged'on each side bar 16, of the head frame section 15, are the projections 29,
supporting members 22, are provided with.
metal extensions 34, having each a knuckle end 35, to which the brace member 36, is connected. When the device is set up as a chair, the brace member 36, extends through the upper portion of slots 37, in members 12. In this position the-brace member. 36 abuts against cross-bar 17, serving to retain the brace member 36 in engagement with the upper extremities of slots 37.
A brace member 38 is connected to crossbar 26. When the device is set up as a cot, the bar 38 engages with metal cross-bar 14, and when thedevice' is setup as a chair, this brace bar engages with a bracket 39, de pending from cross-bar 20. This arrangement serves to prevent outward movement of the supporting elements 25. To prevent an inward movement of elements 25, I have provided hooks 40, adapted to engage with corresponding notches 41, in supporting members 25.
In collapsing the device for shipping, the brace member 36 is forced manually from engagement with the extremities of slots 37, and the central frame section and foot frame sections are folded upon one another.v The central and head frame sections are folded upon one another, and retained in position The supporting elements are then edly connected to one end frame section,
and including metal extensions, knuckles forming the extremities of said egztensions, a bail member hingedly connected to said knuckles and extending through said slots,
said bail member engaging With the upper extremities of said slots inth'e set up position of the device, and serving to hold the said supporting elements in a rigid position ing the central frame section and the hingedly-co1inected supporting elements to cooperate with said hooks.
=2. A collapsible device including a central-and two end frame SQOtlOIlSySEtlCl central fran'i-e section 'having slots in the "sides thei eof and said slots each having a notch at its upper amenity, supporting elements dfor thehead end frame "section, nieans for locking '"said supporting elements in fixed lrelation With the end fraine section, other supporting "elements for the foot end frame section, metal extensions I on F the last-named supporting "elements, and a bail lfilnbel hingedly i connected 1 to said metal extensions, and enga-giiig at its opposite end With said notches .in the set uplposition of the device, and "said ball menirber bearing against the central f'rame section 'lil its set 'up position to iprevent displacement from said notches.
3. A collapsible "de'vice including a central and two end frame sections, 'means for lioldin-g the central and one end frame sect ion tog-et'her including projecting legs on the "end fra'me section, hooks on the central frame section "adapted to engage with said lugs to holdthe fraine sections together in locked position, supporting elements forthe central and end frame sections'having rounded and notched ends, said supporting eleni'ents being hingedly connected to said end frame section, hooks mounted on the frame section and engaging with the notches in said rounded ends, supporting means for the remaining end frame section, means for locking said supporting means in tiXedi'elat-ion to said end frame section,;and ll'l fixed relation to the central and opposite for lockingthe frame members in the sev-.
eralposit-ions, said frame sections including a central frame member, a head fm'nemem- {her and a foot time. member, a pair'of'de pending brackets on the central frame member a crossbar lnte ral with said dc ending brackets, a depending bracket integral .ivith the foot frame member, supporting I i y l M i, elements hingcdly connected to the head frameniember, a brace member loosely connected to said supporting elements and adapted to engage with the first-named crossbar an one set -up position, and with the dependingbracket in another set up position, other supporting elements hingedly connected to the foot frame 'n'iei'nbe'r, extensions integral with the last-named[supportconnected to said extensions and. engaging with the central frame member.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature. I U
