(Cl. 5-95) This invention relates to crib attachments for beds and has for one of its objects the provision of a frame that may readily be detachably secured to a bed or cot to temporarily convert the said bed or cot into a crib.

Another object of the invention is to produce an attachment of the character referred to provided with adjustable means for securing same to various sizes of beds, etc.

A further object of the invention is to provide such an attachment which when secured to a bed, will be firmly held in place and have no up and down or lateral play in relation to the bed.

A still further object of the invention is to so position the crib frame in relation to the bed mattress that the sides of the said frame will be embedded in the said mattress and thus prevent the childs legs or feet from accidentally being injured by slipping between the said sides and mattress.

Another object is to produce a device of the character described in which the maximum simplicity of construction and operation is secured.

Other objects and advantages will appear as the nature of the improvements is better understood, the invention consisting substantially in the novel arrangement and co-relation of parts herein fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to describe corresponding parts throughout the several views, and then finally pointed out and specifically defined and indicated in the appended claims.

The disclosure made the basis of exemplifying the present inventive concept suggests a practical embodiment thereof, but the invention is not to be restricted to the exact details of this disclosure, and the latter, therefore, is to be understood from an illustrative, rather than a restrictive standpoint.

The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustration, is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of my improved crib attachment, shown secured to a bed.

Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.

Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 22 Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a similar view taken on line 44 Figure 1.

Figure 5 is an end view looking from the left of Figure 1 showing the crib locked to the head portion of the bed.

Figure 6 is a fragmental sectional view showing a modified form of the invention, and

Figure 7 is a perspective view of one of the elements of the adjustable securing means.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, 5 indicates a bed or cot comprising a head post 6, a foot post 7 and side rails 8. The said side rails 8 may have a pliurality of brackets 9 secured to them for supporting a bed spring 10 upon which the mattress 11 may be supported.

Supported upon the side rails 8 of the bed is a crib frame 12, the said frame comprising a head post 15 a foot post 16, a fixed side 17 and a side 18 which is pivotally supported upon a pair of pins or studs 19 in the head and foot posts 15 and 16. A screw 20 and wing nut 21 maintains the said side 18 in upper or closed position.

Secured to or integral with the head post 15 of the crib frame is a pair of extensions 23 terminating in posts 24 which pass through openings in a slat 25 maintained in place against the bed rails 8 by means of pins 26 which pass through one of a series of holes or openings 27 in the posts 24. By providing a plurality or series of such holes 27, provision is made for securing the crib to beds having wider or narrower side rails. The foot post 16 is provided with extensions 23a which are exact duplicates of the extensions 23 and are provided with posts 24a to be engaged by a slat 25a. The head and foot posts 15 and 16 as well as the extensions 23 and 23a are provided with shoulders 30 which rest directly upon the bed rails 8.

The lower rails 31 and 32 of th sides of the crib as well as the lower rails 33 and 34 of the head and foot posts 15 and 16 respectively, are so positionedwith respect to the bed rails 8 that when the crib frame is secured in place, the said crib rails 31, 32, 33 and 34 will be embedded in the mattress, and despite the weight of the child its feet can not slip under the said rails and be pinched or otherwise injured.

In Figure 5 of the drawings, I have shown the crib frame 12 as locked to the head post 6 of the bed 5, by means of a locking bar 36 pivoted upon a stud 3'7 which passes through the rail member 38 of the crib head post 15. To lock the crib to the head post of the bed the member 36 is turned into the position indicated in dot and dash lines and then the same is passed between the uprights 37a in the head and turned to the full line position. When the crib is so attached the extensions 23 and the slat 25 may be omitted if desired.

In Figures 6 and 7 I have shown a modified form of the invention in which the crib is adapt- 2 ed to be secured to beds wider than those illustrated in Figures 1 to 5. To accomplish this, the extensions 23 and 23a on one side of the crib may be made a part of a bar 40 provided with a plurality of openings 41 adapted to be engaged by studs 42 extending from the lower rails 33 and 34 of the head and foot posts 15 and 16 of the crib frame, and maintained in place by nuts 43. I may if desirable use two such bars on both the crib foot and head posts. By shifting the said bars outwardly or inwardly from any given point, wider or narrower beds may be used. It is to be understood that where two such bars are used, one will be right hand and the other left hand, and where four are used, one pair will be right hand and the other left hand. Slats of suitable length may be provided with each combination of bed and crib.

From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a crib frame which may be readily secured to any size bed or cot and firmly held in place thereon without any tipping or swaying in either up or down or in a lateral direction.

It will also be seen that my improved attachment is adaptable both for home as well as hospital or dormitory use.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A crib frame for beds, extensions on the said frame, posts on the said extensions, and

slats in engagement with the said extension posts and the bottom of the bed for detachably securing the crib frame to the bed rails.

2. A crib frame for beds, comprising a head portion, a foot portion, sides, a pair of extensions, one on each side of the head portion, a second pair of extensions similarly positioned on the foot portion, a strip engaging each pair of extensions and the bottom of the bed rails and means for maintaining the said strips in said engagement.

3. A crib frame for beds, comprising a head portion, a foot portion, sides, a pair of extensions, one on each side of the head portion, a second pair of extensions similarly positioned on the foot portion, a pair of shoulders at the bottom of both the head and foot portions for engagement with the top of the bed rails, a strip engaging each pair of extensions and the bottom of the bed rails and means for maintaining the said strips in said engagement.

4. A crib frame for beds, both the crib frame and bed being provided with head and foot ends extensions on the said frame, means for engaging the said extensions and bed for detachably securing the crib frame to the bed rails, and means on one of the said ends of the crib frame for detachably securing same to the complementary end of the bed.

5. In combination with a bed having a spring and mattress, a crib frame the said frame comprising a head and foot portion, a pair of oppositely disposed extensions at each end of the crib frame, in operative engagement with the outer sides of the bed rails, a strip in engagement with each pair of extensions and the undersides of the bed rails, shoulders on the head and foot portions of the crib frame in engagement with the top surface of the bed rails, means for maintaining the said strips and shoulders in said engagement, and sides on the crib frame so positioned that they will be embedded in the mattress when the strips are maintained in said position.

6. A crib frame for beds, the said frame having a head and foot portion an extension at one side of the foot of the crib frame, a similar extension on the same side of the head of the crib frame, an adjustably mounted extension bar opposite each extension, and a strip detachably secured to each extension and to the bar opposite thereto and in operative engagement with the underside of the bed rails.

'7. In combination with a bed and a superposed crib frame, the said frame having a head and foot portion, extension bars at the head and foot of the said crib frame extending below the bed and laterally adjustable with respect thereto, and slats in engagement with the underside of the bed and detachably secured to the said extension bars.
