MARY LOUISE HIIiLYER, OF GOLIAD, TEXAS.
BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 15, 1913. 1 Serial No. 789,869.
To all whom it may concern:
."Be it known that I, MAnYLomsu HILL: YER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goliad, in the county ofGoliad and State of Texas, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in'Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a bed attachment and the rincipal object of the invention is to provi e a device which will serve as a back rest for an invalid. v
Another object of the invention is to so construct the back rest that itmay be conveniently connected with the'bed'so that it may be angularly disposed.
Another object of the invention is to so mount the back rest that it will he out-of the way when not in use, but which does not need to be removed from the bed when it is desired to use the same. I
With these and other objects in view, this invention consistsofcertain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. I
v This invention is illustrated in panying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective vlew of the bed the accom with the back rest in a position which it as Fig.2 is a perspec= sumes' when not in use. tive view of the bed with the back rest in a position for use. Fig. 3is a section taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. '1 withthe head posts of the bed broken away to Show the manner in which the pivot rod-ofthe back rest is mounted. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a back restin aCposition for use the dot- 1 ted'line position in eating a folded position of the back rest. Fig. 5 is a section taken along the-line 5-5 in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a section taken along the line 6'6 in Fig. [1.
This invention is intended as an attach ment for a bed which is provided with the head board 10 and foot board 11 which are connected by side rails 12. These side rails 12 form supports for the slats 13 by-which the springs and mattress. 14 are supported.
Guard rails 15 are carried by the bedfleach of which has a leg 16 entering a sleeve 17 so that the guard rails 15 can be vertically disposed and held in an adjusted position by the set-screws 18. These guard rails are in tended to prevent any danger of a person who is restless from rolling out of bed, and are also intended to form a support for the vof the side vertical table 19 which is Patented May 5, 1914.
ivotally connected with i one of the guard rails 15 by the hinge plates i 20. This table can against one side of the bed or may be turned to the position shown in Fig. 2 and held in this position by the set-screws 21 which are carried by the hinge plates 18.
hang from the rail 15' llhe head board 10 has its sideposts 22 provided with alined openings 23 so that a pivot rod 24 can be passed through these openings, to ivotallymountv a back'. rest which is carr ed by the head .board. The backrest is provided with a frame made up arms 25 and a connecting rod 26 pivotally mounted upon the rod.24 constituting the attaching bracket for the back rest." A catch 27 is carried by one of the side arms 25 and is intended to engage a pin 28 carried by one of the side posts 22so' that bracket can be held in an adjusted position 7 as shownin Figs. 2 and4.
The supporting board of the back restis provided with sidebars 29' which are connected by the upper and lower rods 30 and 31 and whichareprovided-with longitudinally extending slots 32 through which the rod 26 passes so thatthesupporting board will be slidably connected with the attaching frame. The lowerends. of the side bars are provided with notches 33 which are -in-v tended toengage the rod 24 so that whenthe back rest is in. the foldediposition'shown in Fig. -1, there will be no danger of the supporting board slipping out ofthe proper po-' sition. These notches also form 7 points which to" a certain extent dig into the mattress and thus afford means for reventing the board from slipping out of tl 'l position in which it is placed when used Y The operation of this device will'be read ily understood from a comparison of Figs. 1, 2 and 4. When the device is not in use, the backrest-is raised to the position shown in Fig. 1 with the catch 27 engagin the pin 28 as shown in Fig. 5, thus hol bracket frame in the vertical position. The back supporting board is also raised to the position with the rod 24fitting into the notches 33. This will hold the'backrest securely in a folded position and prevent any danger of its accidentally slipping loose. When it is desired to use the backrest, the catch 27 is released and the bracket swung forwardly as far as desired and the catch is again brought into engagement with the pin e angular 10o mg the 28, and will thus hold the back rest in this position. The back sup orting board can side of the bed 2 to the position shown in Fig. 2 and held in this position hy'tighten'- in the set-screws 21,
hat I claim, is:
' ing head, a rod extendingacrossthe lower portion of said head, arms pivotally secured to said rod, a secondary rod secured to the upper ends of said arms, a back rest'pivotally and slidably secured to said secondary rod for allowing the back rest to be easily adjusted, said back rest comprising side oewe? bars, the lower ends of said bars being rounded and provided with U shaped notches said back-rest-adapted to be carried ent of secondary securing means, the lower portion of said bars adapted to sink into the r bed-clothing when in use to hold the rest in Abed attachmentcomprising a supporta set position.
In'testlmony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature 1n presence of two witnesses.
MARY LOUISE HILLYER.
