To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OSCAR G. NELSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Adjustable Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of chairs designed for the amusement and comfort of children, the object of the improvement being to control and adjust the back, foot rest and table going to make up the chair and other objects which will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view showing the foot rest in its lowered position. Fig. 2 is a bottom or underside view of the table and foot rest showing the table connected to the foot rest. Fig. 3 is a view showing a. portion of the chair frame and illustrating the upper portion of the back in its normal position when looked as illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a horizontal section on line 44, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view showing a fragmental part of the chair frame and illustrating one of the catches for holding the guide bar, either in lowered or elevated posi tion. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the chair seat showing a portion of the chair frame and illustrating the foot rest in its lowered position. Fig. 7 is a side elevation showing parts in section and illustrating the back in an inclined position, also showing the table connected and the foot rest extended. Fig. 8 is a bottom or underside view of the seat, foot rest and connecting and retaining bars showing the foot rest in an extended position similar to that shown in Fig. 7.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.

In the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the chair seat upon which may be located the cushion 2. To the chair seat 1 is attached the chair frame, which consists of upright members, two of which constitute the rear portion or members of the chair frame and are designated 3, the other two constitute the forward or front members of the chair frame and are designated by the numeral 4:. These four members are tied together by suitable tie bars or rods 5, which are connected to the upright chair members 3 and 1 in the usual manner, the lower portion of the chair frame proper being held by the chair seat 1. It will be understood that the chair frame within itself may be of the usual construction, except that the frame is formed of sufficient length that a child can stand upon the seat and be held in a standing position without danger of falling or the child may sit upon the seat. The object of providing a chair upon which a child may stand is to provide means for permitting the child to be amused by imparting an up and down movement to the chair frame, thereby producing a baby jumper, owing to the fact that the chair frame may be and preferably is suspended by means of the ropes -6 or their equivalents and the springs 7, which springs are connected in any convenient manner to the suspending ropes 6 and the springs connected at their top or upper ends in any convenient manner to some overhead object. The back 8 is hinged at its bottom or lower end to the seat 1 by means of the hinges 9, by which arrangement the back can be placed in substantially a vertical position or at right angles to the seat or brought into various inclinations as best illustrated in Fig. 7. For the purpose of securely holding the back 8 in its vertical or upright position as illustrated in Fig. 1, the bars 10 are provided, which bars are secured to the rear members 3 by means of the clips 11, said bars being spaced from the rear frame members 3 for the purpose hereinafter described. To the rear side of the back 8 and near its upper end is attached in any convenient and well known manner the housing 12, in which housing are located the beveled ended catch bars 13, which catch bars are normally held outward or extended by means of the springs 14. For the purpose of releasing the catch bars 18 their inner ends are provided with the knobs 15, which knobs extend through the slot 16 formed in the housing 12 so that they may be drawn toward each other, thereby releasing the catch bars 13 from the bars 8, at which time the back is free to be swung backward and into an inclined position.

For the purpose of limiting the backward movement of the back and holding the same in the desired inclined position, the links or arms 16 are provided, which are pivotally connected to the back about midway between top and bottom ends of the back 8. The links or arms 16 are provided with the right angled portions 17, which right angled portions are for the purpose of engagement with the notches 18 formed in the bars 8. It will be understood that when the back is to be held in the position shown in full lines Fig. 7 the links or arms 16 or the right angled portions thereof engage the upper notches as illustrated in full lines Fig. 7, and when the back is to be brought into various adjustments the links or arms 16 are seated in the notches below the upper ones or they may be connected at the extreme bottom or angled portion 19.

It will be understood that when the chair back is brought from an inclined position to substantially a vertical position the beveled ends of the catch bar 13 will ride or strike against the bars 8, thereby forcing the catch bars inward or toward each other, but after the catch bars have fully passed the bars 8 they will be thrown outward automatically by the springs 14:, thereby locking the back in the position illustrated in Fig. 7 or in substantially a vertical position.

To the bottom or underside of the base or seat 1 are attached the bars 20 by means of the right angled flanges or ears 21, which bars are provided with the cut out portions 22, which cut out portions are for the purpose of producing what might be termed elongated slots or openings as between the upper edges of the bars 20 and the bottom of the seat 1. To the bottom or seat 1 are also attached the plates 23 by means of the fianges 24, which plates are provided with the rearward extending fingers 25, said fingers being spaced from the bottom of the seat 1 as best illustrated in Fig. 7 and are for the purpose hereinafter described. To the bottom or underside of the seat 1 are secured the brackets 26, to which brackets are pivotally attached the links 27 and to the bottom or lower ends of the links 27 are connected the foot rest bars 28, which foot rest bars are provided with the elongated slots 29, through which elongated slots and through apertures 30 formed in the bottom or lower ends of the links 27 are passed the clamping bolts 31 upon which clamping bolts are located the thumb nuts 32, thereby, pivotally and slidably connecting the foot rest bars 28 to the links 27.

To the forward ends of the foot rest bars 28 is pivotally connected the foot rest 33 by means of suitable brackets 34. hen it is desired to bring the foot rest into the position shown in Fig. 1 or Fig. 6 the links 27 are permitted to assume suspended positions and when suspended they carry the foot rest bars 28 or in other words carry the forward portions of the said foot rest bars. WVhen it is desired to bring the foot rest into the position illustrated in Fig. 7 the nuts 32 are loosened after which the foot rest bars 28 and links 27 can be brought into substantially horizontal positions and parallel to each other, after which the foot rest bars can be moved longitudinally outward, thereby bringing the foot rest into the position shown in Fig. 7.

For the purpose of limiting the outward movement of the foot rest bars 28 the cross rod 35 is provided, which cross rod is securely connected to the foot rest bars 28 in any convenient and well known manner, by which arrangement the rear ends or portions of the foot rest bars are tied together and the forward ends also tied together by means of the brackets 34, thereby holding the foot rest bars in proper spaced relationship and parallel with reference to each other. As the foot rest bars 28 are moved outward, the rest bars in proper spaced relationship and the bottom of the chair 1,but when the cross rod 35 strikes the rear ends of the plate 23 the outward movement of the foot rest bars will be stopped, but owing to the fact that the cross rod 35 comes above the fingers 25, there can be no rocking movement of the foot rest bars.

For the purpose of guiding the extreme rear ends of the foot rest bars 28, they are each provided with the pintles 36, which are located at right angles to the foot rest bars 28 and moved back and forth in the slots 22 or more specifically in the cut out portions of the bars 20. It Will be understood that the pintles 36 also provide a pivotal connection for the extreme rear ends for the foot rest bars 28, after said foot rest bars have been moved backward and into the positions shown in Fig. 6.

For the purpose of providing means for supporting a child while in a standing position and also arm rests, the sides 37 are pro vided, which are fixed to the front and rear vertical members of the frame and for the purpose of providing a front support for the child the bar 38 is provided, which bar is adj ustably attached so that it can be brought into the position illustrated in Fig. 1 or into an elevated position. In some instances it may be desirable to place the front bar 37 near the top of the chair frame proper and for the purpose of providing means for holding the bar 38 in either an elevated or lowered position the front members 4 are provided with suitable apertures 39 in which apertures are seated the spring actuated bolts 40. When it is desired to change the position of the bar 38, the bolts to are pulled outward, thereby withdrawing the same from the apertures 39 after which the bar 38 can be moved up or down, but when the bolts 40 register with the apertures 39, the bolts 40 will be automatically moved inward by means of the springs 41 In some instances it may be desirable to provide what might be termed a table or tray for the use of the child, and therefore, the bottom or underside of the bar 38 is provided with the brackets 41 and the table 42 provided with the bars 43, which bars are extended so that their extended portions can be inserted in the brackets 41 and the table locked in position by means of the catch 44, which catch is pivotally attached to the bracket 45, which bracket is secured to the bottom or underside of the table 42. The spring catch 44 is provided with the hooked end 46, which hooked end engages the pin 47, which pin is securely attached to the bottom or underside of the bar 38.

For the purpose of preventing any accidental displacement of the catch 44 the spring 49, is provided, which spring is so arranged that it will normally hold the hooked end of the catch in proper engagement with the in 47 It will be un erstood that by the various adjustments of foot rests and back with reference to the seat the chair can be brought into various positions and into such positlons that the chair can be used for various purposes; first, as a baby jumper; second, as a chair proper; and third, as a reclining chair or a swinging one.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is

In a childs adjustable chair, the combination of a suspended frame, a chair seat, brackets secured to the seat, links pivotally attached to the brackets, foot rest bars provided with elongated slots, and means for slidably and pivotally connecting the links and foot rest bars together, the foot rest pivotally connected to the forward ends of the slotted bars, parallel bars secured to the bottom or underside of the seat, said bars provided with cut out portions, plates secured to the bottom of the chair seat, said plates provided with rearward extending fingers and a bar adapted to connect the foot rest bars together and to limit the outward movement on said foot rest bars, and fingers adapted to support said cross bars, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
