1. SHKOR. COMBINATION CHAIR AND SOFA.

INVENTOR. ElE L ahn Shkor A TTORN E Y.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINATION CHAIR AND SOFA.
Application filed January 13, 1920. Serial No.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Join: Simon, a citizen of Russia, residing at S arrows Point, county of Baltimore, and SEate of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Chairs and Sofas, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combination chair and couch the diflerent members of which are adapted for adjustment to different positions to form either a chair or a couch.
The invention has for an object to provide a device of this kind which will be characterized by simplicity of construction and easy adjustability of the different memhere from one position to another.
A further object is to provide adjustable head and foot rests which may be brought into use or not, as may be desired.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the fol* lowing description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan View of a combination chair and couch con structed according to the invention, showing it in extended position forming a couch.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the device arranged to form a chair.
Fig. 4 is a front view of the device in the latter position.
As here shown my improved combination chair and couch comprises seat and back elements having hinged thereto a foot rest and ahead rest respectively, the back element being hinged to the seat element.
The seat element consists of a horizontally disposed rectangular frame constructed of the side bars 10 and cross braces 11 rigidly united at their ends, legs 12 being fixed to the corners of the frame, these legs being here shown as curving downwardly away from one another as seen in side elevation. Upon this frame is fixed a suitable cushioned seat member 13.
The back element comprises a similar rectangular frame constructed of the side bars 14 and cross braces 15 rigidly united at their ends, a cushioned back member 16 being mounted on this frame. The back ele- Specification of Letters Patent.

ment is hinged to the seat element by hinges 17 whose leaves are fixed respectively on the lower cross brace 15 of the back element and rear cross brace 11 of the seat element. The back element is held in its raised, or back forming position by means of a pair of rods 20 hinged at one end as at 21 to the side bars 14 midway between the ends thereof and having their opposite ends in the form of inturned hooks 22 adapted to engage in bayonet slots cut inwardly from the upper faces of the side bars 10 of the seat element, the rods preferably holding the back element in a slightly inclined position as shown in Fig. 3. \Vhen in use as a couch the back element is supported in a horizontal position by legs 24 hinged to the inner faces of the side bars and adapted to swing between the latter when the back is raised.
The foot rest comprises a shorter rectangular frame consisting of side bars 25 and cross braces 26 this frame having a cushion member 27 fixed thereon. The foot rest is hinged to the seat element by hinges 28 fastened to the adjacent cross braces thereof. The outer end of the ported by means of legs 29 hinged at their upper ends to the inner faces of the side bars 25 adjacent the outer ends thereof. these legs being adapted to be swung to a position lying entirely within the confines of the side bars 25 when the foot rest is not in use. As clearly shown in the drawings the hinges 28 are arranged to permit the foot rest to swing downwardly from a horizontal position and when not in use it is adapted to be swung in under the chair element. To retain it in this position each of the side bars 10 of the latter has fixed to the underside thereof a bracket 30 carrying a hooked latch 31 which is adapted to engage under the adjacent cross brace 26 on the foot rest.
The head rest also comprises a short rectangular frame consisting of side bars 35- and cross braces 36 and 36 and having a cushion member 37 fixed thereon, and be ing hinged to the upper end of the back element by hinges 38 fastened to the upper cross brace of the latter and the adjacent cross brace 36' of the head rest. As clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings the outer face of this cross brace 36 is inclined from upper to lower edge thereof, thus permitting the head rest to incline foot rest is sup baekwardly with respect to the back element when the device is in use as a chair.
hen the device is in use as a couch the head rest preferably has an opposite, or upward inclination with respect to the hack element, as in Fig. 2, and as here shown the rods 20 which support the back element in its raised position are employed to support the head rest. To this end the side bars of the latter are formed with bayonet slots i0 out inwardly from the upper faces thereof, in which slots the hooked ends 22 of the rods engage.
It is believed that the manner of use of my improved combination chair and couch will be apparent from th above description. To change it from a chair to a couch the hack element is swung foiwvardly a trifle to allow the hooked ends 22 of the rods 20 to be lifted from the slots 23 in the side hars 10 of the seat element. The back element is then lowered, the hinged legs 24 automatically assuming a proper position. The rods 20 are then swung around toward the head rest and the latter tilted upwardly sufficiently to allow the hooked ends 22 of the rods to enter the slots 40, the head rest then moving downward until the hooks 22 engage the forward ends of the slots 40. The latches 31 are disengaged from the cross brace of the foot rest and the latter is swung to its horizontal position, the legs 29 dropping automatically to vertical position as the foot rest swings upward. To change the device from a couch to a chair the above operations are reversed, the legs of the foot rest being swung upwardly between the side bars 25 occupying the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 inclosed under the seat element.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows- A combination chair and couch comprising a seat element, a back element hinged to said seat element, :1 head rest hinged to said back element, adjustable legs carried by said back element, and. a con'nnon means for supporting said back element in raised position when the device is in use as a chair, and said head rest in a slightly inclined position when the device is in use as a couch, said means comprising a pair of rods hinged to the back element and adapted to be attached either to the seat element or to the head rest.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
JOHN- SHKOR.
