LEG REST V 2 Sheets-Shet 2 Filed Jan. 31, 1945 Patented Jan. 28, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,414,856 LEG REST Andrew 8. Cox, Little Rock, Ark. Application January 31, 1945, Serial No. 575,485
3 Claims.
This invention relates to demountable, collapsible leg and foot rests which may be utilized with chairs of usual make-up having rungs. It is designed for ready setting up and removal, and adjustability is provided for so that it can be adapted to the needs and comfort of the user. It is structurally simple and can be fashioned of readily obtainable materials by labor of reasonable skill.
In the drawings forming part of this disclosure one embodiment of the invention is shown and in these drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a chair with the foot rest in proper relation thereto.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the foot rest in collapsed position.
Figure 3 is an edge view of the rest, the parts being shown separated.
Having reference to the drawings by numbers, like parts in the several views being designated by like numbers, in Fig. 1 a chair of not unusual construction is shown. It is to be understood that a particular chair construction is not important, the only need being that rungs be provided with which the foot rest may cooperate. The chair here shown is of the high back, beach folding type, and has the leg portions and H and an adjustable back 12. Suitable arms 13. are provided and the seat portion I4 is disposed in proper relation to the back and legs.
The chair has front and rear rungs l5 and'i6 placed in the usual or any desired manner, rung i6 supporting adjustably the back l2 of the chair, while rung l5 cooperates with the leg rest, which will now be described.
The rest is made up of two frame members, one of which is formed of longitudinal side rails ll, the front ends of which are spanned and held together by slats l8 of any desired number, fOlll being here shown. The slats I8 are of suflicient width and in such relation to one another as to form a sufficient area to provide a comfortable rest for the feet and legs of one sitting in the chair. Further, the boards l8 give rigidity to the side rails. The rails are preferably slightly reduced at their ends to form inclines IS on which boards l8 rest and are leveled up to proper position to form a foot and leg rest.
At their inner ends the side rails ll are pivotally connected by suitable bolts to a ground brace or fulcrum frame made up of relatively short members 20 coupled by a brace rod 2| which gives stability to the fulcrum frame portion.
The two pivotally connected or'hinged frames described are designed to engage the chair rung l5, as shown in Fig. 1, with the forward ends of the short frame members 20 resting on the floor and forming a, fulcrum. The ends of members 26 are preferably chamber off, as shown at 22, to give firm ground or floor engagement. The chair rung I5 is gripped between the side rails I! of the main frame and the members 20 of the fulcrum frame, rung-engaging seats or notches 23 being provided to insure proper engagement. Preferably, a plurality of seats 23 will be provided so as to permit adjustment of the rest and adapt it to different positions and heights. In this way it can be brought to different positions suitable to the occupant of the chair and fitted to rungs of various heights. It will be understood that ring-engaging means other than the specific notches or seats here shown may be substituted.
Constructed in accordance with the invention herein disclosed, a. rest is provided which gives a firm, stable support for the feet and legs; which can be quickly set up and taken down, and which, when not in use can be collapsed as shown in Fig. 2 into small compass for storage.
Mechanical variations, involving only the skill of the artisan, may be made from the illustrative construction here given and all such as fall within the range of the appended claims are to be regarded as within the purview of the invention.
I claim:
l. A demountable and collapsible leg rest for chairs comprising a frame made up of side rails having rung engaging notches on their lower edges and transversely disposed slats connecting their outer ends to provide a rest portion, and a second frame to provide a fulcrum for the assembly made up of side rails having rung engaging notches on their upper edges and a transverse connecting rod, said frames being hinged together at their inner ends to permit engagement of a chair rung between them.
2. A demountable and collapsible leg rest for chairs comprising a frame having a rail provided with rung engaging means on its lower edge, said frame having a leg rest portion, and a second frame to provide a fulcrum for the assembly having a rail provided with rung engaging means on its upper edge, said frames being hinged together adjacent their inner ends to permit engagement of a chair rung between them.
3. A demountable and collapsible leg rest for chairs comprising two frame members hinged together, each member having a notch to cooperate with each other to engage the rung of a chair between them, one of said members adapted to project outwardly to a position elevated above the fioor to provide a rest, and the other of said members adapted to project downwardly to engage the floor.
