COMBINED HIGH CHAIR AND CRADLE.
Specifcaton'of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 1921.
Application filed August 27, 1920. Serial` No. 406,419.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, MARCIENE J. ORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lorain, in the county of Lorain, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined High Chairs and Cradles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in chairs and particularly to convertible chairs.
One object of the invention is to provide a childs high chair the legs of Ywhich are formed and mounted 'in a novel manner to permit of easy and quick raising and lowering to adjust the chair to different heights.
Another object is to provide 'a chair of this character that is capable of being easily and quickly converted into a small bed or crib.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when the accompanying drawing.
1n the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a chair made in accordance with my invention in condition for use as a chair. .Y
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the chair converted into a crib.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged, sectional, detail view through the intersecting portions of two of the legs of the chair on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a pair of parallel horizontal members having their oppositeends turned downwardly at 12 and fitted with Hoor engaging casters. Connected to the forward end of each of the members 10 by means of a hinge 14 is an upwardly inclined tube 15, while a similar tube 16 is connected to the other end of each of the members 10 by a hinge 17. The
upper end of the pairs of members 15 and 16 are disposed in crossed relation, and sliding on the outer face of each of the members 15 is an offset plate 18 having its free end slidably engaged in a groove 2O formed longitudinally in the lower Vface of the member 16.V By this construction the tubular members 15 and 16.7are capable of pivotal 16. Pivotally movement on their hinges 14' and17, respectively, so that their upper ends slide past each other in crossed relation. Telescoped into the upper end of each of the members 15 and 16 is a rod21, the upper ends of said rods being connected to the seat bottom 22 byV means of the'hinges 23. The other end of each'of the plates 18 is secured to one of the rods 21 by means of a bolt 18 which slides in a longitudinal slot 15" or 16 formed in the members 15 and secured to each rear corner of the seat bottom is a downwardly extending link 24 which is pivotally connected at 25 to a similar link 26 which is pivotally and slidably connected to the rear end of the member 10. Pivotally connected to the rear edge of the seat bottom 22 is the back member 27 of the chair, and formed on the upper end of said back member is a rearwardly and downwardly turned portion 28, the purpose of which will appear hereinafter. Carried by the forward edge of the seat bottom is a depending foot rest 29. Suitable arms 30 are secured to the side edges of the seat bottom. By this construction the tubular members 15 and 16 are capable of pivotal movement on their hinges 14 and 17, respectively, so that their upper ends slide past each other in crossed relation.
The link 24 is slotted at 25 to receive a clamping bolt and nut 26 disposed through the upper end of the link 26. Thus the links can be held in rigid, vertical alinement to hold the seat and base members 10 in proper spaced relation.
hen it is desired to adjust the height of the chair the nut and bolt 26 are loosened and the seat bottom 22 moved upwardly or downwardly, according to the height desired, which will result in the rods 21 sliding out of or into the tubular members 15 and 16. The members 19 and 31 will guide the members 15 and 16 in their pivotal movement. `When the chair has been adjusted to the height desired, the nut of the bolt 26 is tightened. Carried by the rear ends of the arms 30 are the transversely extending spring pressed bolts 32 which engage in openings 33 in the sides of the chair back 27 to hold the back in upright position.
When it is desired to convert the chair into a crib, the bolts 32 are withdrawn from the openings 33 and the back let down until the portion 28 rests on the floor. Prior to this adjustment of the back the joint 25 is Y ber thusorm. a-'continuous-bed surface;
Slidably disposed through each Varm 30, and arranged to be pulled outwardlyV from the rear thereof,.is a; rod: 34;, the outerA end of'whioh is turned angularly, as at 34E', for` engagement in a socket 35, in theY back, when Vthe device isin lowered. position, for use as a crib asr clearly seen. in` Fig. 3.
lWhat isclaimed. is.:
A convertible high, chair comprising a base having Vcrossedtubular members. movably connected thereto, a seat bottom having rods movably connected thereto and slidably engaged in the tubularf members, a back member movably connected with `'the seat bottom yand arranged to `be swung into horizontal position, and a brace member between tliebaseand seat bottom arranged to be movedinwardly to. permit the seat bottom being lowered into the plane of the back member. f .1 f In testimony. whereof, I affix mysignature inthe presenoeotwowitnesses. 1
