Be it known that I, ELIHU D. MCGLAMERY,

a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vaynesborough, in the county of \Vayne and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Swings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a swing which may be easily put together or taken apart and which may be used interchangeably as a chair-swing, a childs crib or bed, or as a lounge for an adult.

The nature of my invention will be de scribed below and pointed out in the claims.

In. the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly broken. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views. Fig. 6 is a side elevation, partly broken. Figs. 7 and 8 are detail views. Fig. 9 is a broken side elevation of a modified form of hanger.

A A are inclined uprights. At the top they may be shouldered, and they have a slot or opening a, through which the bolts or pins Z;

pass, fastening said uprights and the top rails 15 together or allowing them to be easily taken apart or adjusted. (See Figs. 1 and 8.)

C C are end braces for the uprights. They are provided at either end with a bent metal arm or book 0, which engages with slots or openings d on theinside of the uprights near the top. (See Figs. 1 and 5.) By this construction the parts may be easily locked together or released.

D D are side braces. The lower ends are loosely fastened to the uprights by bolts fand at the upper they have a hook g and a recess h, the latter fitting over the projecting end of bolts 2', passing through the top rails, and the hook fastening over the end of said bolts and drawing and locking the parts D B together. (See Figs. land 4.) By this and the foregoing construction it will be seen that the framework can easily put together or taken apart.

E E are the hangers. The tops are made I strips.

H II are the chairs. The front legs and seat are jointed together by rod m and the seat and back by rod 01, passing also through the hangers. The chair has no rear legs, the lower portion of the hanger forming an equivalent. The bottom board supports the front legs and also provides a foot-rest. The chairs are of the folding variety and may be easily removed for packing. The chair should be so jointed to the hangers as to substantially come in front of them, as shown. In other swing-chairs as the swing moves forward the back drops rearward and as the swing moves backward the back moves forward, causing a disagreeable swinging of the body. The chair shown is not only mostly in front of the hangers, but the back comes in contact with the hangers at one point only, hence stands as erect at one point of the movement as at another. Under the chairbottom there is a pivoted flitch or stop I, engaging with a downward extension 0 of the chair-back. When the point of the flitch points rearwa rdly, the chair-back Will be normally upright, when turned transversely the back will be at a recline, and when the point faces the front the back will go farther down, the back at all times being held at the desired place.

This swing may be put to several uses. If the crib K is desired, place it on one of the chairs, so that the hooks p at the rear end will lock with a pin or staple on the side of the chair-back. (See Figs. 2 and 3.)

In Figs. (5 and 7 an intermediate section L is shown, the sides or rails of which have end slots r to engage with rods m of the chairs, whereby this section may be quickly inserted or removed. Now if a lounge is desired insert section L and lower one of the chairbacks for a head-rest. It a side is desired for the lounge, insert one of the side sections M and fasten the hooks s thereon to the pins 2. 2f

If abed for a child or adult is desired, raise the chairback or not, as preferred, insert and lock the otherside section, or insert both side sections, if neither should be in place at the beginning. It will be seen Without further description how any one of the combinations can be formed. in Fig. 6 one side section isremoved In Fig. 9 a modified hanger is shown for indoor use. A wire hanger N, having proper loops a: for supporting rods Z and n, is substituted for the wooden hanger. By this means the swing can be taken out of the frame and fastened in any suitable way to the ceiling of a-room or other proper support and be used in t he nursery, &c. The wireis shown twisted, but. can be arranged in any suitable way.

lt will be seen that. the swing is simple, easily put up and taken apart without employing taps or screws, and presents very desirable attachments outside of a chair-swing.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

l. The combinationwith the hangers and i a support for the front chair-legs, of chairs extending mainly in front of the former, the hangers and the chair-back and seat being directly jointed together at one point, as set forth.

2. The combination with the hangers forming an equivalent of rear chair-legs, of the chair back and seat jointed together, the jointing-rod passingthrough the hangers, the front legs jointed t0 the seat, and a suitable support for the front legs, as set forth.

The combination With the hangers, of the chairs, the intermediate section, and side sections resting on the-intermediate section and the chair-seats and having central and end fastenings, as set forth.

4. The combination with the uprights, of side braces D pivoted at one end thereto and having at the other a hook g and recess h, and the top rails provided with bolts entering said recess and engaging said hook, as set forth.
