FOLDING ADJUSTABLE CHAIR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,991, dated May 3, 1881.

Be i'tknown that I, ALEXANDER Gr. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding and Adjustable Reclining-Chairs and Foot-Rest Attachments; and I doherebydeclax e thetbllowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a side view of my improved chair when the parts are unfolded in a sitting or upright position; Fig. 2, a similar view when the parts are in an inclined position; Fig. 3, a vertical section through the chair and its attachment when occupying the position shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a bottom plan of the chair when folded for packing or transportation; Fig. 5, a sectional view of a modification of my improved chair.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the class of folding and adjustable reclining-chairs and foot-rest attachments; and the invention consists in the novel arrangements and combinations, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A A and B B represent the cross-legs of a folding chair, pivoted together below the seatframe and respectively connected together by the cross-rails a I), in the usual manner. The legs B extend upward some distance above the seat-frame O, and to near the upper ends thereof is pivoted the back-frame D, which extends upward a short distance beyond the upper ends of said legs B. The rear rail, 0, of the seatframe 0 is recessed out nearthe ends and rear side thereof for the reception of the lower ends of the side rails of the back-frame, which are pivotally connected to said seat-frame. The side rails of the seat-frame are pivotally connected to the front supporting-bars, E E, of the arm-rests F F and the upper ends of the legs A A in such manner that the seat-frame retains nearly its horizontal position while the back-frame and foot-rest are changed to any desired angle. The arm-rests F F are pivotally connected at their front ends to the upper ends of the sup un'ling-bars E E, and at their rear ends to the sides of the legs B B.

G G represent the brace or stretcher bars, connected together by the cross-rail g, and pivotally connected at their lower ends to the cross-rail a, or to the inner sides of the legs A A near their lower ends. The upper ends of the bars G are provided with hooked rods H H, the hooked ends It it connected to and playing in the longitudinal grooves (1 formed in the inner sides of the side rails of the back-frame D, and said side rails are also provided with a series of inclined notches, (1 for the reception of the hookedends h h of the rods H H, whereby said back-frame is adapted to be inclined and supported in any desired position.

Instead of using the hooked rods H, malleable iron bars may be substituted therefor having projecting pins for engaging with the grooved and notched side rails of the backframe, as clearly shown in Fig. 5.

I represents a detachable foot-rest frame, to the side rails of which, and near the centers thereof, are pivoted the brace-bars J J, and at the ends of said rails are rigidly secured the hooked bars K K. The lower ends of the" pivoted bars J J are provided with holes j j, which engage with the lugs or pins 1) 1) projeeting from the innersides of the legs B B, while the hooked ends of the rods orbarsK K engage the headed lugs c c projecting from the side rails of the seat-frame.

It will therefore be readily perceived that the foot-rest can be easily and quickly attached or detached from the chair; and as theback-frame is adjusted to any desired inclination, the legs A B, seat-frame, and foot and arm rests, all being pivotally connected together and to the back-frame, as shown, are correspondingly adjusted and rigidly secured in any desired position by the hooked rods of the brace or stretcher bars G G engaging with the notches in the side rails of the back.

When it is desired to fold the chair for transportation the foot-rest is removed from the chair and the hooked rods brought to the upper ends of the grooves in the side rails of the back-frame, when the several parts of the chair will occupy the position shown in Fig. 4, and in a condition for packing or transportation.

The back and seat frames and foot and arm rests can be upholstered in any desired style; and washers m are introduced between the pivotal connections of the several parts in the usual manner.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. I11 a folding and reclining chair, the combination, with the pivoted cross-legs A A and B B and seat-frame U, pivoted near its front end to the upper ends of the legs A A, of the notched back-frame D, pivoted near its upper end to the upper or extended ends of the legs B B and at its lower end to the rear end of the seat-frame O, and the pivoted brace or stretcher rods G G, substantially in the manner as and for the purpose herein shown and described.

2. In a folding and reclining chair, the coinbina-tion, with the pivoted cross-legs A A and B B and seat-frame G, pivoted near its front end to the upper ends of the legs A A. of the notched back-frame D, pivoted near its upper end to the upper or extended ends of the legs B B and at its lower end to the rear end of the seat-frame U, the pivoted brace or stretcher rods G G, and the foot-rest I, pivotally connected at its rear end to the front end of seatframe, and by rods J J to the pivoted crosslegs B B, substantially in the manner as and for the purpose herein shown and described.

3. In a folding and reclining chair, the combination of the pivoted seat provided with the lugs c 0, the pivoted legs B, provided with the pins or lugs b b, hack-frame D, pivot-ally connected to said seat-frame and pivoted crosslegs B B, and the detachable foot-rest frame I,

provided with the rigid hooked bars K K and pivoted and perforated brace-bars J J jj, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.

4; In a folding and reclining chair, the conr bination, with the pivoted cross-legs A A and B B and SGtLlkfI'fllllB C, pivoted near its front end to the upper ends of the legs A A, of the baeleframe D, having grooved and notched side rails, and pivoted near its upper end to the upper or extended ends of the legs B B and at its lower end to the rear end of seat-frame U, and the brace or stretcher rods G G, pivoted to the lower ends of the rails A A or connecting crossrail thereof, and provided with hooked ends H H, adapted to engage with the grooved or notched side rails of the back-frame, substantially in the manner as and for the purpose herein shown and described.

5. In a folding and reclining chair, the combination, with the pivoted crosslcgs A B, of the seat and back frames 0 D, pivotally connected together and to the legs A B, foot-rest I, pivotally connected to the legs B and seatframe, the pivoted brace or stretcher bars G G, for seeuringthe seat and back frames and foot.- rest in any position they may be adjusted, the several parts arranged relatively to each other and the pivoted supporting-bars E E and pivoted arm-rests F 1*, substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
