To all whom z't may concern:

Be it known that I, OSCAR R. CAssnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bedstead Extensions, of which the following is a speciiication.

The invention relates to bedstead attach* ments, and more particularly to the class of extensions for bedsteads.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of an extension of this character in which the same may be readily attached to and dismounted from a bedstead, the extension, when applied to the bed, will enable a person to occupy the same for sleeping purposes.

Another obj ect of the invention is the provision of an attachment for bedsteads, in which the width of the said bedstead may be increased, whereby a single bed can be conveniently used for the occupancy by two or more persons.

A further object of the invention is the provision of an attachment which can be readily and conveniently mounted upon a bedstead for occupancy by an infant or adult, and that may be conveniently and quickly dismounted from the bedstead, so that it may be hung beneath the said bedstead when not in use, thereby occupying the least possible space.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character which is simple in construction, strong, durable, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, and inexpensive to manufacture.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of a bedstead with the attachment constructed in accordance with the invention mounted thereon. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 1 -4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the supporting legs, the same being partly broken away. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. l.

Similar reference characters indicate correspondin parts throughout the several views of t e drawings.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 10 desi nates the side rails, 11 the head section an 12 the foot section of a bedstead of the ordinary well-known construction, the side rail 10 being of inverted L-shape in cross section throughout its length. The bedstead herein shown'is of the iron or metal type.

Connected with the side rail 10 is a pairv of extensible legs, each comprising a hollow downwardly tapering body 13 open at its bottoni, into which telescopes an extensible foot 14, the same being provided with a central Vshaped channel 15 in its upper edge, and said channel extends almost entirely through the foot. Formed in opposite sides of the body 13 are spaced alining apertures 16 arranged in vertical rows, and removably fitted in a pair of these apertures 16 is a locking pin 17 which is designed to sustain the foot 11 in adjusted position. Thus, it will be seen that by altering the position of the pin 17 in the body 13, the length of the leg may be varied, as occasion may require. This body 13 of each leg is formed in one side with an inverted L-shaped recess 18, the latter being correspondingly shaped to the side rails 10 of the bedstead for receiving the same, thus enabling the mounting of the leg on the side rail of said bedstead.

At one side of the bedstead and detachably connected with the bodies 13 of the legs is a bed spring frame 19, the same carrying the ordinary bed spring 20, and this frame is provided with spaced transverse bars 0r rails 2l, which are fixed to the frame in any suitable manner, and in each bar or rail,

near one end thereof, is provided a vertical opening 22, the rail being fitted in the recess 18 in the body 13 of the legs, and abuts against the side rail 10 of the bedstead, and detachably fitted in these bodies 13 of the said legs are vertically arranged locking pins 23, the same being adapted to engage in the openings 22 in` the rails 21 for detachably connecting the same to the legs. Also connected with the bed spring frame 19 at the outer side thereof is a foldable member or leg 24 which serves to sustain the frame 19 in horizontal position when it is connected with the bodies 13 of the legs, the latter being adapted to brace the side rail 10 of the bedstead and prevent sagging thereof, When the bedstead is being occupied.

To the bodies 13 of the extensible legs are connected brace hooks which are adapted to detachably engage in eyes 26 mounted in the overhanging portions 27 of the bodies 13 relative to the side rail 10 of the bedstead, thereby preventing the breaking off of the overhanging portions 27 Jfrom the bodies of the said legs When strain is applied thereto While attached to the side rail of the bedstead.

At opposite ends of the frame 19 of the bed spring are suitably connected hook members 28 Which are adapted to engage the head and

11 and 12 respectively, of the bedstead when the extension has been shifted under the bed, so that it may be suspended thereby when not in use. Of course, it is to be understood that before hanging the bed spring frame on the bedstead beneath the same, the said frame is necessarily detached from the extensible legs connected With the side rail of the bedstead.

The extension can be quickly and readily attached to and detached from the bedstead, and it does not disfigure the bedstead, and can be used on all sides of the bed. Also it may be suspended from the bedstead when not in use, so as to be out oit' the Way and thus occupy but little room.

What is claimed is:

1. The combination With a bed spring framehaving cross rails, of extensible legs having recesses therein for receiving the side rail of a bedstead and the cross rails of said frame, a foldable leg carried by said frame, and means for locking the cross rails to the extensible legs.

2. The combination With a bed spring frame having cross rails, oi' extensible legs having recesses therein for receiving the sidev rail of a bedstead and the cross rails of said frame, a foldable leg carried by said frame, means for locking the cross rails to the extensible legs, and means for holding the extensible legs in adjusted position.

3. The combination with a spring frame.

having cross rails, of legs having recesses therein for receiving the side rail of a bed- .stead and the rails of said frame, extensible feet carried by said legs, means locking the f frame in the recesses in the legs, a foldable prop carried by the said frame, and hook members carried by the frame'for suspending it from the bedstead beneath the same."
