To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Oscan R. CASSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bedstead Extensions, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bedstead attachments and the object of the invention is the provision of simple and ellicient means for converting a single bed into a double bed and providing such an attachment that it may be conveniently shifted to an outof-the-way place when not in use.

A further object of the invention is to improve upon that type of structure illustrated in my Patent #990,107 wherein the adjustable supporting legs were connected directly to the side bars of the bed so as to relieve the strain thereon.

Another object of the invention is to pro vide a device of this character which may be utilized independently of the bed; in other words, a device which is adapted to be used as an attachment for a bed or as an independent bed and in which the legs are adjustable to accommodate the device for different; heights of beds whereby the parts are maintained in level position.

Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 a top plan View. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical sectional view taken through one of the supporting legs. Fig. 5 is a detail vertical sectional view through another one of the si'ipporting legs. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view showing a modified form of bedstead connector.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the attachment comprises a side bar 1 of angle iron or other suitable material and which has pivotally attached thereto adjacent its ends by means of the rivets or bolts 2 the end members 3 and 4, both of which are substantially identical in struc ture. These end members are provided at their free terminals with angle clips 5 which depend therefrom and are arranged to engage over the side bars 6 of the bed, only a detail of the bed being shown for purposes of illustration. Secured to the side bar 1 by means of the bolts 7 are a pair of legs 8 preferably constructed of metal and being tubular to receive the extensions 9 which have reduced threaded ends 10 adapted to screw into the internally positioned collar 11 threaded to receive them.

When the device is used as an attachment the clips are engaged over the side rail (3 of the bed and a separate spring mattress frame 12 is supported noon the end bars, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The weight of the spring mattress frame and the side and end bars is supported upon the legs 8 and upon similar legs 13 which are connected to an auxiliary side bar 14: which extends beneath the outer ends of the end members 2 and lies adjacent the clips 5. The legs 13 are provided with a head 15 having a horizontal recess and a vertical wall arranged to produce an L-shaped shoulder for the abutment of the angle strip 1 1. This shoulder is indicated at 16 and is covered by a. ledge piece 17, as shown, to prevent vertical displacement or disconnection of the leg. Passing through the ledge piece and into the head is a lock pin 18 which prevents lateral disengagement of the bar 141. \Vhen it is desired to house the attachment the spring mattress frame is removed and the end members folded horizontally upon the side members, being first disconnected from the auxiliary side bar 14 and from the side rails of the bed.

It will be seen that when the clips are engaged with the bed rail that the attachment is held against movement toward and away from the bed and a proper relationship between the attacluncnt and the bed is maintained. lVhen the clips are disengaged from the side rail, however, it will be seen that the device is unitary and may be utilized independently of the bedstead, all of the legs being adjustable to secure the proper height.

A bedstead attachment comprising a side bar, end bars pivotally connected thereto, means carried by the end bars for enaging the side bar of the bedstead, supportinglegs carried by the side bar, an auX- iliary side bar arranged to support the free ends of the end bars and supporting legs for the auxiliary side bar. A bedstead attachment comprising a side bar, end bars pivoted thereto, and arranged to support a spring mattress frame, means for connecting the end bars to the bedstead, adjustable supporting legs carried by the side bar, an auxiliary side bar arranged to freely engage beneath the terminals of the end bars and supporting legs for the auxiliary side bar.

3. A bedstead attachment comprising a side bar, adjustable supporting legs removably connected thereto, end bars pivotally mounted upon the side bar and arranged to receive the mattress frame, means for conneeting the terminals of the end bars to a bedstead, an auxiliary side bar freely engaging the end bars beneath the terminals thereof, adjustable supporting legs for the auxiliary side bar and means for removably connecting them to said bar.
