To (all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM L. EDwARDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lima, in the county of Allen, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Beds; and I do hereby declare the, following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to extensionbeds, and has for its object to provide an improved device of that nature which may be used either as a single or as a double bed, which shall have but few parts and which shall be easy of transformation from the single to the double form, and in which when the device is used as a single bed the extension may be attached to the under side of the frame of the bed proper, occupying but little space thereunder and being provided With means for retaining a head and foot board.

A still further object is an improved means for coupling the head and foot boards of the bed proper and the extension.

Other improvements will be apparent from a consideration of the specification and will be specifically pointed out in the claims.

The invention will be more readily understood from an inspection of the annexed drawings, forming a part of the specification, and in which the same parts are referred to by like numerals on all the views.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved extension-bed, the parts being shown in their position when the device is to be used as a double bed. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the headboards of the bed proper and extension, the connection between the two being shown in section. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the device when adapted for use as a single bed with the extension head and foot boards removed and showing the extension-frame attached to the under side of the frame of the bed proper Referring to the drawings, 1 designates as a Whole the single bed, provided with the customary headboard 2 and footboard 3. The extension as a whole is referred to by numeral 4 and is likewise provided with a headboard 5 and footboard 6, the said head and foot boards being of the same height and general construction as those of the bed proper and ornamented where ornamentation occurs in a similar manner. The upper and lower rails 7 7 and 8 8 of the headboard 2 and footboard 3 of the bed proper are provided at their inner ends with a recess or opening 9, in which fits the extended end 10 of the upper and lower rails 11 11 and 12 12 of the head and foot boards of the extension. The frame 13 of the extension is rounded, and the bars 14 of the head and foot boards of the extension are given a slight outward bend adjacent the extension-frame, so that both head and foot boards of the extensionframe may be laterally moved along the frame until the extended end 10 of the rails is received in the opening 9 in the rails of the bed proper. The extension head and foot boardsare then fastened in place upon the extension-frame by means of bolts 15, which pass through the bars 14 of the boards and the extension-frame 13. The openings in the rails of the head and foot boards of the bed proper are of a depth suflicient to accommodate the extended ends 10 until the inner end of the upper rail contacts with the adjacent bar 14, which acts as a stop.

The inner rail 16 of the frame of the bed proper is made of double width to permit of the bed-springs to rest both on the extension and the single bed. On the under side of said rail 16 is a series of hinges 17, three being shown in the drawings, and the outer member of each of said hinges is provided with a threaded opening in which is fitted a brace 18, provided at its end with a hook 19, adapted to contact with and act as a support for frame 13 of the extension-bed. The frame is further supported by means of a pair of braces 20 20, hinged to the under side of frame 13, as at 21, and adapted to be retained when not in use by means of catches 22 22, likewise positioned upon the under side of said frame. The under side of the frame of the bed proper is likewise provided with a pair of straps 23 23, adapted when in use to extend across said frame and be retained in place upon the opposite sides thereof. As shown in Fig. 2, said straps are fastened, as at 24, to the under side of the rail 16 of the bed-frame proper and are caught upon the opposite side by any preferred means, as by hooks 25.

When it is desired to make use of the device as a double bed, the extension 4 is first swung into position from beneath the bedframe proper, and the braces 20 are then lowered to support the same. The head and foot boards 5 and 6 of the extension are then moved along frame 13 until the extended ends of the rails thereof are received in openings 9, such movement being limited by the rails 14. The head and foot boards of the extension are then bolted to the frame by means of the bolts 15. The device is then ready to receive the usual springs, mattress, &c.

When only the single bed is to be used, the head and foot boards of the extension are first removed and the braces are then attached to the under side of the extensionframe by the catches 22, the head and foot board having been laid in place on the brace 18 and retained thereby. The extension is then swung upon the hinges 17 under the frame of the bed proper and is held in place thereunder by means of the straps 23 23 and hooks 24.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a device which can at will be readily converted into either a single or a double bed and which owing to the provision of the various straps and braces will be firmly held in position at will and with no danger of breakage or separation of any of its parts.

The width of the extension is approximately fifteen inches, and the frame of the bed proper is a slightly greater distance above the floor to permit of the extension to be freely swung on its hinges in-one direction or the other.

Numerous slight corrections may be made within the scope of the appended claims, and

I therefore do not limit myselfto the exact construction shown and described.

Whatis claimed is- 1. An extension-bed comprising in combination a main frame, and a supplemental frame hinged to the under side of said main frame; head and foot boards for said frames; rails on said boards; projecting ends on the rails of the boards of one frame, and recesses formed in the rail ends of the boards of the other frame and adapted to receive said projecting ends to couple the two headboards and the two footboards.

2. An-extension-bed comprising in combination a main frame and a supplemental frame hinged thereto; a headboard and a footboard attached to said main frame; means for supporting said supplemental frame in a horizontal position; a headboard and a footboard for said supplemental frame; means for attaching the same thereto; and means for coupling the two footboards and the two headboards, said means comprising rails on said head and foot boards, recesses formed in the inner ends of the rails of the head and footboards of the stationary frame, and projections formed on the adjacent end of the railsof the head and foot boards on the supplemental frame, said projections being received in said recesses.
