To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LOUISA J. SHELLEY, of Keokuk, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved 5 Guard for Bedsteads, of which the following is a full, clear. and exact description.

The object of my invention is to furnish a simple and convenient device for preventing children from falling out of bed, and also for retaining the bed-clothes in place. To these ends I make a guard of flexible material, attached 011 bars and titted to the side rail of the bed in a manner to allow of its being readily raised and lowered, as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification. in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure l is a perspective v ew of a bedstead provided with the guards, and Fig. 2 is a crosssection through one rail of the bedstead.

The guards A are shown as applied to abedst-ead of plain character, but can readily Each guard consists of a strip, a, of canvas. cloth, carpet, or other flexible material, either plain or ornamented, attached on its longer sides to bars I) b, that are of a length to extend from the head-board to the foot-board. The bot tom bar 1) projects beyond the flexible material so that it can be attached at its ends to the head and foot posts directly, or to anxiliary posts 0, that I prefer to use. When the posts 0 are used,they will be attached to a block secured either on theside rails or to the head and foot boards, so as to offset the posts cfrom the moldings. Hooks, as shown at 0, may be used to fasten the posts to the blocks. O11 their upper ends are knobs, hooks, or ca ches f, adapted for receiving and holding the ring or loops on the ends of cords 9. that are con nccted to the top bars 2) of guards A, so as to retain the guards in their raised posit-ion. with springs for the purpose of straining the guards. In Fig. 2 a spring-bolt is shown for that purpose.

It will be seen that when the guards are not required, or during theday,either one or both can be let down, rolled up, and tucked under the mattress out of the way. \Vhen raised, they serve as a perfect guard against a child falling, andalso prevent the e1 thes from dragging to the door.
