UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OASPAR M. \VAGNER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING CRIB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,731, dated November 18, 1890.
Application filed May 3, 1890. Serial No. 350,503- (No model.)
- T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CASPAR M. WAGNER, residing-in Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Cribs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which 7 Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail showing a device for fastening the ends of the upper rail of the side pieces of the crib to the end pieces. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same device. Fig. at is an end elevation, the side pieces being folded down on the bedding. Fig.5 is a section at line 5 of Fig. 1, showing one of the side pieces folded down outside of the crib. Fig. 6 is a central longitudinal vertical section showing the legs and end pieces folded under the frame of the crib. Figs. 7, 8, and 9 represent a modification in which the legs and end pieces of the crib fold over on the upper side instead of down on the under side of the frame. Fig. 7 is a vertical central longitudinal section. Fig. 8 is a similar section showing the legs and end folded onto the upper side of the frame. Fig. Sis an end view showing one of the side pieces folded down onto the frame. Fig. 10 is a detail showing a supporting-iron, which is used when the end pieces and legs are hinged so as to fold over on the top of the frame. Fig. 11 is a section at line 11 of Fig.10. Figs. 2, 8, 10, and 11 are full size. The remaining figures, except Fig. 1, are about one-sixth of full size, and Fi 1 is on a larger scale.
The leading objects of my invention are to provide a crib composed of a frame and fold ing end pieces fastened to said frame by straps, and side pieces with fastening devices for securing the side pieces and end pieces together, and to attach said side pieces to the frame by the use of pivoted straps, which I accomplish as illustrated in the drawings, and as hereinafter described. That which I claim as new will be pointed out in the claims. In the drawings, A A represent the side bars, and B B are the end bars of the frame, such bars being properly secured together. To this frame a fabric of woven wire 0 or other suitable material is secured.
D E are two posts, the lowerparts of which serve the purpose of legs, and to the upper parts of these posts cross-bars a b are secured.
c are spindles. The upper parts of the posts, cross-bars a Z), and the spindles form one end piece of the crib.
F G are two other posts, to the upper parts of which bars (Z c are secured, and f are spindles. The upper parts of these postsF G and the bars (I e and the spindlesf form an end piece for the other end of the crib. Thus the legs at each end of the crib and the end piece at the same end are formed together.
The posts D E are hinged to the side bars of the frame by means of long metal straps H, one end of each strap being pivotallyconnected to one of the posts and the other end to one of the side bars of the frame, as best seen in Fig. 1. These metal straps are somewhat curved, and, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6, they are hinged or pivoted at one end near the lower edges of the side bars, and the pivotal point for the other end of each of these straps is pivoted to one of the legs at a point considerably below the upper edge of the frame. hen so pivotcd, the legs, with the parts connected therewith, which form the head-piece, can be folded down under the frame, as represented in Fig. 6, for purposes of shipment or storage.
I J represent two bars connected by spindles g, which bars and spindles form one of the side pieces of the crib. The lower bar J is hinged to the frame by means of two straps h, which are of considerable length, the straps being also hinged to the bar .I. The upper bar I is provided at each end with a slotted plate 1?, which when the side piece is in position for use passes over a screw j in the post and locks the legs and end pieces in position. The plates i can be brought into engagement with the screws j when the side pieces are being brought to their upright position and before the lower bar J has been pulled out into line with the legs upon one side of the crib. This can be easily accom plished from the fact that the lower ends of the straps h are pivoted to the end of the frame at some little distance from the sides thereof. The other side of the crib is provided with a side piece similar to that which has just been described. These side pieces can be folded down over bedding K, as represented in Fig. 4, or they can be folded down onto the frame when there is 110 bedding in the crib. Either side piece can also be folded down in front of the crib, as represented in Fig. 5, if desired.
70 are casters secured to the frame, upon which the frame can rest when the legs are folded.
I thus provide a crib with legs, end pieces, and sides, all of which can be readily folded Whenever desired, and which when the parts are in position for use will be strong and secure.
The straps H form means for supporting the frame on the end pieces when the cot is set up. The side pieces and fastening devices form means for locking the end pieces in their upright position.
The legs and end pieces of this crib might be so connected with the frame that they can be folded over onto the top of the frame, instead of underneath, which can be done by arranging the long straps near the upper edge of the frame, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. When so arranged, it will be necessary to furnish a support for the frame when the legs are in their upright position. Z (best shown in Figs. 7, 10, and 11) shows such support, one of which is to be secured to each leg, on which supports the frame will rest. WVhen the legs and end pieces fold under the frame, itrests on the long, straps H.
In Fig. 7 I have shown a device for fastening the upper rail of the side pieces to the end pieces somewhat different from that be fore described, which consists of a hook m on the bar, which hook enters a staple n on the post.
When the side pieces are in position for Y use and locked, they fit between the posts of the end pieces, which end pieces and their legs will then be firmly locked and held in position for use.
I do not herein claim, broadly, hinging the end pieces to the frame of the crib by means of straps, as such construction is shown and described in my application, Serial No. 353,502, filed May 3, 1890.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. In a crib, the combination, with end pieces having legs and straps pivoted thereto, of a frame composed of side and end bars pivoted to the straps H and arranged to be supported from the end pieces, side pieces, and fastening devices for securing the side pieces to the end pieces, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a crib, the combination, wit-h end pieces having legs and straps pivoted thereto, of a frame composed of side and end bars pivoted to the straps H and arranged to be supported from the end pieces, side pieces, straps h, pivoted to the side pieces and to the frame, and fastening devices for securing the side pieces to the end pieces, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
CASPAR M. XVAGNER.
