FOLDIHNG COT OR BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed October 31, 1904. Serial No. 230,849.
To (LU, whom, it 'ntrty concern:
Beitknownthat I, AnoLrH Gusnonr, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Paso,
in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FoldingCots or Beds; and I. do declare the following to be a full, clear, and we act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I
My invention relates to folding cots, and has for its object to provide a device of this class which can be foldedinto a compact bundle for shipment or transportation and which can in a very short time be unfolded and assembled to form a strong, rigid, and comfortable cot, making my invention particularly adapted for camps and for military purposes.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction of the several. parts of the cot, particularly in the head and foot sections and in the webbing or wire mattress of any web which is attached to the cot after the frame has been set up and as sembled.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a cot constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the foot-section, showing one leg folded and the other in an upright position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the head-section, showing both legs folded in full lines and one leg in an upright position in dotted lines. Fig. i is a perspective View of one of the side pieces in a folded position. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the Fig. 6 is a view, partly in section, illustrating the head-section and the roller carrying the webbing or wire mattress in position on the head-section; and Fig. 7 is an end elevation of the roller, showing the webbing or wire mattress in arolled position, as when the cot is folded for shipping or transportation.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures, in whioh-- 1 indicates the cot, which is composed of the head-section 2, the foot-section 3, the side pieces 4, the webbing or wire mattress 5, and the transverse member 6. (Shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.)
Referring particularly to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the head-section 2 is constructed of a piece of horizontal channel metal 7. It is of course understood that the metal employed in the mamifactureof this cot should be as light as is consistent with strength and durability. it maybe of thin iron, brass, aluminium, or any suitable metal. The horizontal piece7 beingof a channel metal it is possible to hinge in any desired manner the legs 8 and 9 at the ends of the piece 7, shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the said legs Sand 9 being also constructed of a channel metal of a smaller size than the horizontal piece 7, so that said legs 8 and 9 may be folded within the horizontal piece 7, as shown in Fig. 3. Secured on the top of the horizontal piece 7 and extending over the ends thereof are two pieces of spring metal 10, said pieces being provided with a small groove 11, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6, and secured to the legs 8 and 9 at the upper ends thereof is a metal piece, having a sharp or knife edge 12, as shown. In order, therefore, to unfold the legs 8 and 9 and to secure the same in an upright position, the legs are swung out of the horizontal piece 7 and carried into a vertical position, the knife-edge 12 engaging the spring-metal piece 10, forcing the same up until the knife-edge 12 engages the groove 11 in the said spring metal 6, holding the legs rigidly in a vertical or upright position. .ln order to again fold the legs within the l'iorizontal piece 7, the ends of the springpieces 10 are raised with the hand until the knife-edge 12 is disengaged from the slot 11.
Referring now to Fig. 2, which illustrates the foot-section, it will be seen that the same is composed of a horizontal piece 13, which is also of a channel metal, having the legs 14 hinged at the ends thereof in any suitable manner. The said legs 141- are also of a channel metal smaller than the horizontal piece 13, so that the said legs can be folded within the horizontal piece 13, as shown in Fig. 2. Hinged within the legs 14 is a brace 15, and the under side of the horizontal piece 13 is provided with a notch 15, as shown in Fig. 2. In order, therefore, to set up the foot-section, the legs 1 1 are swung out of the horizontal piece 13 into a vertical position, the brace 15 being then swung out of the leg 1a and up into engagement with'the notch of the horizontal piece 13', as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Referring now to Fig. 4., which illustrates one of the side pieces, it will be seen that these also are constructed of a channel metal and are composed of two sections 16 and 17, hinged as shown in Figs. 1 and 4: or in any other suitable manner, said side-sections-being provided with a series of recesses 18, within whichare located-a hook or pin 19 for purposes which will be hereinafter fully described. Secured in the ends ofthe side pieces are the usual books 20, which are designed to enter slots 21, located in the legs of the foot and head sections, as is commonly done in beds and cots. When the head-and foot sections are then set up-as described and the side sections connected thereto by inserting the hooks 20 within the slots 21 in the legs o'f the head and foot sections, the transverse brace 6 (shown in full lines in Fig. 5 and in dotted lines in Fig. 1) is placed in position between the two side sections, said member6 being preferably provided with dovetail ends 22, which engage the dovetailed block 23 in the side pieces, said member being for the purpose of strengthening the cot and preventing the same from collapsing when in use.
Referring now particularlyto Fig. 6, it will be seen that the leg 8 is provided with a slot 24: in the side thereof and that theleg 9 isprovided with a slot or aperture 25 in the rear side thereof, and a block or stop 26 is also provided within the channel of -the leg 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 6.
26 indicates a roller, which is constructed similar to the usual curtain-roller, the same being provided with a rod 27, extending within the roller and connected to a spring 28, said spring being also connected to the roller in the usual manner, the pawls 29 (shown in Fig. 7 being adapted to engage notches 30 to hold the said rod 27 and the spring 28 in a wound position, said pawls being arrangedso as to release the rod 27 and allow the-spring 28 to unwind. A webbing ofa suitable*heavy material, such as canvas, is secured on said roller 26. The webbing 35, beingaswide as the roller, is provided with a series of buttons 32, which are-adapted to engagetheheads or pins 19 on the side pieces 4, as shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described the several parts of my invention, the cot is assembled as follows: The head and foot sections 2 and 3 are set up, as described. The side pieces are connected thereto, and the central transverse member 6 is placed in position between the two side pieces. The roller 26 is provided,at one end thereof, with a cap 33,-having aknob or projection 34 thereon similar to that of an ordinary curtain-roller. In order to secure the roller 26 to the legs of the head-section 22, the rod 27, which enters the roller 26 and which is provided with a flattened end 35, is inserted in the slot 24 in the leg 8, as shown in Fig. 6. The knob or projection 34: at the opposite end of the roller is then passed into the slot or opening 25 in the leg 9 and falls down upon the block or stop 26, which supports the roller. The end of the webbing 31 is then grasped and unwound from the roller, the edges of the webbing being buttoned down on the side sections 4, as shown in Fig. 1, which last operation completes the cot.
Having thus fully described my invention, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction as herein set forth, as various slight changes may be made therein which would fall within the limit and scope of my invention, and I consider myself clearly entitled to all such changes and modifications.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
1. In a folding cot, the combination of one end section and the side sections, an end section, legs hinged to said latter section, springpieces carried on said latter end section and extending over the ends thereof, an extension carried on said legs and constructed to engage said spring-pieces on said end section to hold said legs in a rigid and vertical position, substantially as described.
2. In a folding cot, the combination of an end section, legs hinged thereto and constructed to be folded against said end section, an end section, legs hinged thereto, springpieces carried on said latter end section and extending over the ends thereof, an extension carried on said latter legs constructed to engage said spring-pieces to hold the legs in a rigid position, side sections constructed to engage said end sections, a roller carried on one of said end sections. a webbing carried on said roller, and means on said side sections for securing said webbing in position, substantially as described.
3. In a folding cot, the combination of two channeled end sections, legs hinged to said sections and constructed to fold within the channel of said end sections, side sections constructed to be secured to said legs on said end sections, a roller carried on one end section, a webbing on said roller and means on said side sections to hold the webbing in position.
. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
