FOLDING COT-BED.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,696, dated March 30, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. BEDELL, of Herkimer, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cot- Beds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

The purpose of my present invention is to furnish a cot-bed that can be folded into a compact space for conveniencein shipping and storing, and that will be durable, cheap, and reliable. Iattain this end by constructing a frame of the required size and strength, to which are pivoted four legs, constructed to fold inside of the side bars. I provide four other legs, somewhat longer than those mentioned, which are crossed with them, forming an X. The last-mentioned legs are pivoted to the first at the points of intersection. I provide a looking device consisting of rod or pin inserted in the extreme ends of the side bars, on the inside of thesame. Iprovide notches or catches, located on the under side of the long legs, for embracing or holding the pins in the side bar when the cot is extended.

Another important feature of my invention consists in forming a head and foot board which may be extended and elevated by spreading the cot for use, and is formed by placing a head and foot board on the extension ends of the legs, as indicated in Figure 3.

In the accompanying drawings, similar let-- ters of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views.

In the accompanying drawings, the lockingpins consist of a red at each end of the side bars, thereby forming a loop through which the long legs of the cot can move when the legs are folded or extended, which serves to keep them in place when the cot is notin use.

It is obvious that pins or stops of the required length can be used withoutinterfering with the usefulness of my invention.

Fig. 1 is a plan view of my cot, representing the same folded into a compact space. Fig. 2 is a section on line :0 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is the same, representing the cot in the position ready for use. Fig. 4 is an end View of the cot extended for use.

Having described my invention by reference to the figures illustrated in the accompanying drawings, I will now proceed to describe the same by reference to the letters marked thereon.

In constructing my cot I provide side bars, a a, of the required length and size. These side bars are held in position by cross-bars a a, which are rigidly bolted or let into the side bar, for forming a strong and substantial bed-bottom, on which canvas, wire-cloth, or other suitable material may be fastened or held for supporting the mattress or bed-cloth-' ing. I preferably provide rods a a, which are let into the side bars near their extremes. These rods form in part a locking mechanism for holding the cot rigid when the same is extended for use. I provide four legs, I) I) b b, which are pivoted on the inside of the side bars at a suitable distance from the ends, and are so pivoted that they can be folded or moved inside of the side bars parallel to them. Ithen provide four extension-legs, b I) b I). These are pivoted to the four legs first mentioned at the angle of intersection, as indicated in Fig. 3. On the under side of theselegs I preferably provide circular apertures bbbb constructed to fit or engage locking pins or rods a a By tapering the outerends of the longer legs they will fit between the pins and the crossbars on the side rails. A catch or other device may be provided to accomplish the same purpose. On the upper ends of extensionlegs I provide cross-boards c c,which are rigidly attached to the upper ends of thelegs,for forming a suitable head or foot board. It is quite obvious that the extension end of these legs, one or both, may be omitted without impairing the general usefulness of my invention.

A cot constructed as herein described may be folded into a compact space by disengaging the circular apertures from the locking pins or rods, and moving the X shaped legs inward. The pivoted fulcrumsin the legs serve to draw the extension-legs and end boards inward, so

that their extreme ends rest on locking pins or rods of a as indicated in Fig. 1, thus forn 1- ing a compact cot for shipment or storage.
