Arenas JOHN MCKEOUGH, OF BURLINGTON, VERMONT.
' PORTABLE FOLDlNG CAMP-BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,415, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed May 4, 1885. Serial No. 164,391. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN MoKEoUeH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Ohittenden and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Folding Gamp-Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in portable folding bedsteads designed especially for camp or hospital use; and it consists of two principal sections or divisions hinged to a common supporting central frame, each section being supported by legs so hinged to its outer extremities t-hatthe entire bedstead can be compactly folded into the form of a rectangular box, which can be readily packed away or transported. The entire frame is suitably braced, strong, of simple and cheap construction, and portable, as will be hereinafter more legs.
fully set forth.
My invention is fully shown in the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters indicate like parts.
Figure l is a perspective of my bedstead when extended for occupancy or for ambulance purposes. Fig. 2 is'a similar view of the same when folded and ready to be carried.
A and B are the two sections which form, when extended, the bedstead. They are constructed with the usualside and outer end pieces, (L a and b, c c and d. The interior extremities of their side pieces, a a and c 0, rest upon the center legs, 0 O, to which they are attached by the metallic plates 0 e, which are fastened to the outside of the upper end of the legs 0 G, and to which they are so pivoted atff that they can be folded down upon the legs 0 C. When the sections are extended horizontally, they are securely held by means of the hinged braces g g, which are pivoted to the inner side of the side pieces and center In a similar manner the end supports, D D, are so pivoted to the metallic plates h h, which are firmly attached to the outer ends of the side pieces, a a and c 0, respectively, that they can be folded into the recesses ii and 11 i, which are cut into the lower edges of the side pieces, the length of the recesses being that of the legsD D, and their depth being sufficient to receive that portion of the width of the legs D D which projects beyond the width of the center legs, 0 0, when the two sections of the bedstead are compactly folded together, as shown in Fig. 2. When opened, the legs are firmly held by the hooks p. The several pairs of legs are firmly braced together by the cross-bars k k, which are placed below the point of depression of the sacking or carpet when the bed is used. This sacking material is so attached to the top of the frame of each of the sections A and B that sufficient allowance is made for the quantity of the material required to be taken up in the center when the bed is folded, as shown in Fig. 2.
G is a pillow or bolster consisting of a frame whose ends are pivoted to the side pieces, a a, at m. It is covered with cloth or other elastic materiaL By means of a ratchet-wheel and pawl on its pivoted extremities the frame can be raised or lowered to any angle desired, as shown in Fig. 1.
H H are handles so pivoted to the inside of the end legs, D and D, that they can be elevated to a horizontal position against the lower edge of the end pieces, I) and d, for the purpose of convenience in carrying the bed by hand when the frame is extended. When not required, they can be turned down on the inside of the legs, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l.
When the bed is compactly folded, as described, and as shown in Fig. 2, sufficient space is afforded in its interior for all necessary bedding.
The two sections A and B are held together by books 8, and the handle I is added to facilitate its being carried when folded compactly.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a portable folding bedstead, the combination of the sections A and B, having legs D D pivoted to their outer extremities, the legs being provided with pivoted handles H H, the legs 0 0, having hinged braces 99 con-' necting them with the side pieces, a a andc o, the whole being constructed and arranged in the manner substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the sections A and B, pivoted to the plates 6, attached to the center legs, 0 0, so that they can be folded down against the legs 0 G, and having their side pieces suitably recessed at z i to receive the 4. In a folding bed, the section B, provided folding legs D D, the legs 0 being provided with side pieces, 0, having recesses z" in their with hinged braces g g, to more firmly secure lower edges, the legs D, metallic plates h, atr 5 the sections A B in a horizontal position, and tached to the outer ends of the side pieces, the

3. In a folding bed, the section A, provided In testimony whereofI do affix my signature with side pieces, a, having the recesses 1', the in presence of two witnesses.
metallic plates h, secured to the corners of the JOHN MOKEOUGH. 10 section, the legs D, adapted to be folded into Witnesses:
