BEDSTEAD.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 7,791, dated November 19, 1850.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, VViLHELM ZAISER, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description and representat-ion of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification.

y invention has a twofold character,

' portability and a capability of being arranged at pleasure one over another, so as to be used temporarily as berths aboard steamboats &c. To eect this I construct the bedstead so as to cause the slats which are furnished with suitable clasps, to perform the functions ordinarily due to the slats and side rails combined, and insert the feet of the posts of the upper series into sockets in the top of the post of the lower series of bedsteads.

In the annexed drawing which is a perspective view of a pair of bedsteads ready to be xed one to the other, (a, a) are the head posts and (b, b) are,` the foot postsl respectively of the lower and upper bedsteads; (c, 0') are strong slats, which are caused to grasp the head and foot rails (e, e) by means of metallic hooks (d, d). To cause this structure so far to be adequate to bedstead purposes, I hang latches (f, f) to the posts of the bedsteads, and drop them into catches or hooks (g, g) which are made to project laterally from the outside slats, and thus bind the posts to the slats, and the slats to one another, the posts being kept in line or position with regard the one to the other and converted into a sort of trestle by stays (hy, h). Sockets or their equivalents are provided for the insertion of the feet of the posts of the upper series of bedsteads into the heads of the posts of the lower series.

Having thus fully clearly and exactly described the nature construction and operation of my improvement in portable bedsteads, what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the slats (c), clasps (CZ), and hooks (g) athwart the length of the outside slats, in combination with the rails (e) and latches (f) on the posts (a, b) the whole combining to form a strong and portable bedstead.

To the above specification of my improvements in bedsteads, I have set my hand this 14th February, 1850.
