Description

UNITED STATES PATN FFICE.
ABRAHAM MCDONOUGH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PORTABLE COT-BEDSTEAD.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 6,588, dated July 10, 1849.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM MoDoNoUGH, of the cit-y and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement in portable cots for the use of hospitals, encampments, steamboats, and other vessels or any other service where economy of space is desirable; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, No. l represents the cot in a form ready for use. No. 2 represents the cot folded up for storing away; I, side rails to which the canvass is nailed in the usual mode; B, legs or trussels which are attached to side rails on the lower inner side by means of hinges which hinges are screwed fast to the rails near the end of the rails, and to the legs at the end in such a manner that they can be folded close to the rail the lower ends of the legs being brought near each other at the center of the rail.
Dis the canvass or sacking bottom which forms the bed to lie upon, E head board which is made sufliciently long to reach across the cot when the cot is spread for use, near the ends of the head board are tennons F attached to the board by screws or pins in such a manner that they can be turned around on the side of the board for the purpose of packing and brought out again when the cot is to be used. These tennons fit into holes near the end of the rails, A stretcher made of wood with irons fastened to each end which irons have a thread or screw cut in the center into which the thumb screws C are screwed, C thumb screws having a ring loose about theneck to admit of the screw being turned to this ring is attached a chain which chain is fastened to the leg of the cot, then thumb screws pass through the legs of the cot (at the angles which is formed by crossing the legs) and are screwed into theends of the stretcher.
Having thus fullydescribed the construction of my portable cot I will now show the manner of using it; taking it in the form represented in No. 2 I unbuckle the straps G and unfold the cot bring the legs out perpendicular to the rails cross the legs by bringing the lower end of the legs under the rail opposite to the rail to which the legs are attached I then place the stretcher between the legs lengthways of the cot bringing the ends of the stretcher at the angles formed by crossing the legs, I then run the screw through holes in the legs at the angle and screw it into the stretcher which yhold it firm. I then swing the tennons around on the head board and place them in the holes at the end of the rails and the cotis ready for use. t
Having thus fully described the construe tion and manner of using' my portable cot, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The construction of a folding cot bedstead as described, that is to say the folding legs B with hinges I-I combined with connecting support A and thumb screws C, C, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
