IIIIIIIIIII IUNITED STATE@ PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS I. JACKSON, OF MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA, ASSIG-NOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWARD A.
WETZ, OF MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA.
BED-TABLE.
Application filed September 23, 1912.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, Louis I. Jackson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskogee, in the county of Muskogee, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combined dining tables and beds and has for an object to provide a device of this characterl which will utilize the space between the underneath side rails of the table top to house the folding bed springs and mattress, and will have an extensible table top which is revolubly mounted on the legs, the device being converted into t-he bed by simply rotatingthe table top and extending the same then unfolding the springs and mattress, this operation requiring minimum time and mimimum manual labor, there being furthermore novel means for locking the parts in position to form either the table or the bed.
With the above objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modiiications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification z-Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device as a table and with the legs moved outwardly to permit of the top being rotated to form the bed, the latter position of the legs being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device with the top rotated in an arc of one hundred and eighty degrees. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device with the top extended and folding springs and mattress unfolded to form the bed. Fig. fl is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 3 with portions of the mattress broken away. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 5-5 Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a cross sec` tional view taken on the line G-G Fig. 1l. Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 7-7 Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 8-8 Fig. Ll, and

showing in dotted lines the table top in normal position.
Referring now to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates a two piece table top having side rails 11 and end rails 12 run around the margin of the bottom face, the end rails being spaced inwardly from the end edges. This table top is mounted to turn on its central longitudinal axis between inverted U-shaped legs 13 arranged at the opposite ends of the top, the extreme ends of the top bearing upon the top bars of the legs, as shown in Fig. 1, and holding the top against rotation. For pivotally attaching the top to the legs, a lug 14 is secured to the bottom face of the top bar of each inverted U-shaped leg, this lug being equipped with a pin 15 which projects across the edge of the adjacent end rail 12. A lug 15 is fixed to said end rail and is provided with a tubular bearing 16 which loosely receives said pin. The pin furthermore is adapted to slide longitudinally through the bearing so that the related inverted U- shaped leg may be moved outwardly as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 to clear the table top and permit of the latter being rotated on the pin. The lug 14 is provided on one side of the pin with a stop 17 which is adapted to engage in notches 18 on opposite sides of the tubular bearing and limit rocking movement of the top in either direction as best shown in Fig. 8.
Disposed on the side and end rails are angle-iron extensible side rails 19 and end rails 20 which fit in the corners formed at the meetings of the bottom face of the top 10 and side and end rails 11 and 12. The angle irons form a metal frame to which the folding bed springs are secured, the frame being secured in place by screws 21 or the .like passed through the angle-iron end rails and into the top. The extensible angle iron side rails 1S) are cach formed of two angleirons 22 and Q3 interlitting at their meeting ends as shown in Fig. 7, a hook Q4 being arranged on one of the angle-irons and fitting over the other angle-iron to slidably secure the angle-irons together. One of the angleiron end rails is provided with spaced bracket arms Q5 which are secured to the underneath face of the adjacent half ofthe top as best shown in Fig. 11 to secure the rods by helical springs 30, and transverse cords 3l are terminally connected to thesides of the rods, such cords forming a support for a mattress 32 which is connected to the cross members of the rods by cord loops 33. The cross member of one of the U- shaped tubular rods is fXedly secured in l' folding and conning of the mattress be-r notches formed in the above mentioned bracket arms 25, whereby this rod is anchored. The free rod 27 may be folded back upon the stationary rod with a resultant tween the rods, and to hold the parts in this position a spring catch 34 is secured to the angle-iron end rail which carries the bracket arms 25, this catch hooking over the cross members of the said rod 27 and locking the springs and mattress in folded position when itis desired to use the device as a table. A spring catch 35 is secured to the opposite angle-iron end rail and hooks over 7 the cross member of the said rod 27 to hold the springs and mattress in unfolded position to form a bed, there also being notched bracket arms 36 secured to this end rail on opposite sides of the catch to support the cross member of the said rod 27 when the device is used as a bed.
For locking the top 10 against rotation when the device is being used as a bed, a bolt 37 is slidably fitted in an opening 38 formed in one of the side rails l1 of the top and is adapted to be shot into an orifice 39 in the adjacent inverted U-shaped leg by means of a pin formed integral with the` bolt as shown at 40 and projecting through the side of the opening 38. Furthermore, hooks 42 are secured to the rails as shown in Fig. l and are adapted to be engaged with pins carried by the adjacent leg. Thus the top is provided with locking means on each side of the pivots thereof to positively hold the top against rotation when the device is used as a bed.
What is claimed, is f dl. A combined table and bed including a table top, legs at the ends of said top, said legs normally contacting'wit-h the Linderneath edge portions of said top, means for sliding said legs outwardly beyond saidl top, pivotal connections between said top and said legs permitting of said top being rotated through an angle of 180 degrees down between said legs when said legs are in their outermost limit of movement to form a bed, and means for locking said top in position to form a bed.
2. Arcombined table and bed yincluding an eXtensible table top, a folding frame secured to the underneath face of said top, a mattress secured to and adapted to be folded wit-hin said frame, inverted U-shaped legs at the ends of said table top, said legs normally contacting with the underneath edge portions of said top, means for sliding said legs outwardly beyond said top, pivotal connections between said top and said legs permitting of said top being rotated through an angle of 180 degrees down between said legs when said legs are in their outermost limit of movement to form a bed, and means for locking said top in position to form a bed.
In testimony whereof, I afIiX my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS I. JACKSON.
