SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 273,306, dated March 6, 1883.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES W. POWERS,

Jr., a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Bloomfield, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Gots; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the annexed'drawings, Inaking a part of this specitication, and to the letters and tgures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2, a plan view of a portion of the under side of the same; Fig. 3, an under side plan view, showing the cot folded up; and Fig. 4, a detail view, showing a portion ofthe end.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding` cots or campbeds; and the objects thereof are to produce such a device as may be folded into a compact and small bundle for packing in transportation or when not in use, and which may be readily unfolded and set up in position for occupancy, its peculiarity of construction ren'- dering it, when so set up, very firm in its position, and in no way liable to sag or fall in, either in a lateral or longitudinal direction. These objects I attain by the construction as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter de scribed.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the side rails of a cot, to which is attached,in the usual manner, cloth, canvas, or other suitable material, B, to form the bed. These side rails are formed with inner convex faces, a, and fit in concave recesses b in the end braces, to give a firm joint and bearingsurface when the .cot is unfolded and set up in position for use.

.The end braces are constructedof two pieces, C I), in theform of an elbow orbroken joint, connected together in the center, between the side rails, by a suitable pivot, c, and by their peculiar construction these two pieces, when closed together, form their own stop to prevent their passing each otherbeyond the line of center, and are thus only capable of opening inwardly. These end braces are connected to the side rails by lat angle-plates G, which are firmly secured thereto, and pivoted to the side rails, A, out of the center of bearing of the braces, so that when the cot is opened for use it forms its own brace.

To each ot' the pieces C D forming the end brace is hinged or pivoted one end of a wire rod, E, at a suitable distance from the side rails, A, its other end being hinged or pivoted to a leg, F, which in turn is pivoted to the side rail which it supports, the purpose thereof being to form a brace to the legs, and also automatically draw the legs into position when the cot is set up for use, and push the same up against the side rails when the cotis folded;

also, when the cot is spread open, the legs pass the center of bearing, and the wire brace-rods serve to keep the end braces in their position and prevent the weight of the person reclining on the cot from drawing them in an inwardly or longitudinal direction, but rather serving to keep them in position, and thus give the cot a greater degree of iirniness than is usual in the ordinary folding cot, they generally being so rickety and unsteady as to cause great annoyance to lthe occupant, while in this construction it is impossible, when the cotis spread open, for it to be shaky or in any way unlirm, the end braces serving to keep the side rails irmly apart in a lateral direction, and the wire brace-rods preventing the said end braces from opening inwardly.

Having now fully described my invention,

lwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a folding cot, the end braces consist ing of the'pieces C D, in the form of an elbow or broken joint, said pieces being pivoted on a line of center between the side rails, A, and pivotally connected thereto by the Iiat angleplates G, substantially as and for the purposel described.

2; In a folding cot, the end braces formed of two pieces, C D, in the manner described, and pivoted together, said braces being provided at their ends with concave recesses b, fitting upon the convex inner faces, a, of the side rails, A, and connected thereto by dat angle-plates Gr, substantially as and for the purpose specitied.
