BEDSTEAID.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1906.
Application filed June 1, 1905. Serial No. 263,229.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORA R. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to folding beds.
One object of the invention is to provide a folding bedstead of such character that it may be folded into a case for ready transportation or for the purpose of providing additional space in a room.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a folding bedstead wherein the use of the ordinary slats and side rails are obviated.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the S00 e of the claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the present invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved bedstead in its unfolded position. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof in its folded position.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, it will be observed that the headboard and body portion are each composed of foldable sections, the headboard consisting of the side pieces 1 and 2, having the upper cross-piece 3 secured to the rear edges thereof in any suitable manner. Secured onthe rear face of the cross-piece 3 are two or more eyebolts 4, in which are engaged hooks 5, secured to the upper edges of the section 6 of the headboard, the ends of the section 6 being free of the inner faces of the pieces or posts 1 and 2. Secured to the back of the section 6 and extending substantially over the outer area thereof is a piece of leather or similar material 7, which is secured practically over the entire area of the rear face of the lower headboard-section S, which latter is held in spaced relation to the adjacent edge of the section 6, so that the sections 6 and 8 may be folded with res set one to the other, the leather 7 serving as a iinge between the sections. It will be observed that each of the corner pieces or posts 1 and 2 of the headboard are provided with a pair of casters 9.
Arranged along the lower edge of the sec tion 8 of the headboard are eyebolts 10, in which. are engaged hooks 11 of the section 12 of the body portion of the bedstead, the said body portion section 12 being spaced from and hingedly connected to the body-section 13 through the instrumentality of a piece of leather or other suitable material 14, secured to the under faces of the said sections substantially throughout the entire area thereof, the second body-section 13 being connected to a third section 15 in a mannersimilar to its connection with the section 12 by means of leather or other suitable material 1.6. These pieces of leather serve as a hinge whereby the body-sections may be folded upon one another, so that in its folded position it may be confined within the side pieces or posts 1 and 2 of the head portion for the support of a person through the instrumentality of the foot piece 17, which is rigidly secured to the free edge of the body-section 15 with its under edge arranged for contact with the floor,
(not shown,) and also through the instru mentality of bolts 18, which are wedged in the eyebolts or racks 19, secured to the edges of the body-sections upon each side of each longitudinal edge of the latter. It will thus be seen that when the pins or bolts 18 are engaged with the eyebolts or racks 19 the bodysection will be prevented from collapsing when weight is brought to bear thereupon.
It will now be understood that the bodysections may be folded one upon another for confinement between the corner pieces or posts 1 and 2 of the headboard and that the main portion of the latter may also be folded through the instrumentality of the leather or other suitable material 7.
What is claimed. is-
A folding bedstead comprising a head portion having side pieces and a cross-piece connecting the side pieces, a foldable head-sec tion including flexibly-hinged members detachably secured to said cross-piece, a foldable body-section including flexibly-hinged In testimony whereof I aflix my signature members secured to said hged sectign, aperin presence of tWo Witnesses. tured ugs carried b t e e ges of t e Inembers of the body-sec ion adjacent their meet- 7 FLORA B 5 ing edges, rods detaohably secured in said Witnesses:
lugs, and a footboard secured to the edge of JOHN B. PATToN, the outer member of the body-section. O. H. EDWARDS.
