FOLDING BED.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,154, dated September 8, 1896.

Be it known that we, VILLIAM I-I. MCEN- HILL and BRAXTON B. RICHARDSON, citizens of the United States, and residents of New Brighton, county of Richmond, and State of New York,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart thereof, in which similar letters o'f reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to folding beds; and the object thereof is to provide an improved cabinet or frame with which is connected a bed consisting of separate sliding sections, such sections being adapted to be folded together and the inner section being pivotally connected with the cabinet and adapted to be folded therein; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts hereinafter described.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, and in which- Figure l is a sectional elevation of our improved bed or cabinet, showing the sections of the bed extended and ready for use; Fig. 2, a front view thereof with the parts folded together; Fig. 3, a plan view of a section of the construction shown in Fig. l wit-h the mattresses removed therefrom, and Figs. 4c and 5 represent details of the construction.

In the'practice of our invention we employ a cabinet or casing A, preferably7 rectangular in form, and in which are cabinet or drawer spaces or chambers B, C, and D. The front side of the cabinet-casing is open, as shown at E, and in the lower side of this opening is mounted a roller F.

The bed-frame proper consists of an inner Aand an outer section, the latter of which is adapted to slide within the other, the side bars G thereof being adapted to slide in grooves K, formed in the side bars of the inner section, as shown in Fig. et. The side bars of the inner section are provided with slots H, through which passes a rod L,which is connected at each end with the frame of the cabinet, and the outer end of the inner section is also provided at each corner with legs M, which are hinged thereto and adapted to fold inwardly and transversely thereof. The outer end of the outer section is similarly provided with legs N at each corner, which are also hinged thereto, so as to fold inwardly and transversely thereof, and said section is also provided with an end or foot board O, and the inner end of the inner section is provided with a corresponding end or head board P. The outer end of the inner section is also provided at each corner with upwardly-directed lugs or shouldersR and the inner end of the inner section at each corner with upwardly-directed lugs or shoulders S, which are designed to support, by means of transverse rods connected therewith, the outer end of the mattress T of the inner section and the inner end of the mattress T of the outer section, the inner end of the mattress T of the inner section and the outer end of the mattress T of the outer section being connected with the head-board and foot-board, respectively, and supported in any desired manner. As thus constructed and combined, it will be apparent that the legs M of the inner section may be folded transversely and the legs N of the outer section also folded transversely, and the outer section slid into the inner one and the inner section raised and folded into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and when the parts are extended into the position shown in full lines in Fig. l they may be pulled out as far as the slot II will admit, in which position the inner end of the inner section will be near or adjacent to the front side of the cabinet.

We contemplate the use of folding doors U, but one of which is shown, at each side of the cabinet, so constructed and arranged that when the sections of the bed are folded together and into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l the doors U may be closed over the front of the cabinet and entirely conceal the bed or the sections thereof, and said doors may be ornamented on their outer sides in any desired manner or provided with mirrors, as will be readily understood.

The construction shown in Fig. 5 represents a top plan view of the cabinet, and arranged thereon are the diagonally-transverse plates W, which may be of any desired form IOO or configuration, and by means of which are formed, as will be seen, four separate spaces in which iower-pots or other articles may be placed.

It is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention, and we therefore reserve the right to make such changes therein as fairly come within the scope thereof.

Having fully described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Paientw l. The combination of a casing or cabinet having an opening in the front thereof, of the roller secured at the lower side of the saine, the sectional bed, the parts of which are adapted to slide within each ot-her, the inner sections being provided with longitudinal slots in the side bars thereof, through which extends a rod connecting with the sides of said cabinet or casin g, whereby when said sections are telescoped they may be folded into the cabinet by means of said rod,said sections having hinged legs upon the outer ends thereof adapted to fold transversely of the saine, and the outside end of the inner section and the inside end of said outside section carrying means for supporting the abutting ends of a sectional mattress, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a cabinet provided with draw-spaces, the front side of which is opened, in the lower portion of which is formed a roller of the bed-frame, and consisting of an inner and outer section, the latter adapted to slide within the other, and the side bars of which are adapted to enter the grooves or side bars of the inner section, which section is provided with slots Il, rod L passing through said slots, connected at each end with the frame of the cabinet, the inner section being provided at each corner with legs M hinged thereto, and adapted to fold inwardly and transversely thereof, the outer end of the outer section being similarly provided with legs N, said section being also provided with a foot-board O, and the inner section having a head-board I), the outer end of the inner section being provided at cach corner with upwardly-directed shoulders R and the inner end of the inner section having siinilar shoulders S, and designed to be supported by means of a transverse rod, and a mattress and doors U to close said cabinet, substantially as described.
